On Sunday night, the University of Chicago canceled classes and activities scheduled for Monday, November 30 on the school's main campus in the city's Hyde Park neighborhood, citing a threat of violence made online.

The University was informed by FBI counterterrorism officials today (Sunday) that an unknown individual posted an online threat of gun violence against the University of Chicago, specifically mentioning “the campus quad” on Monday morning at 10 a.m. Based on the FBI’s assessment of this threat and recent tragic events at other campuses across the country, we have decided in consultation with federal and local law enforcement officials, to exercise caution by canceling all classes and activities on the Hyde Park campus through midnight on Monday.

The school says the FBI is investigating the threat but does not mention if additional law enforcement agencies are involved. In addition to the cancelation of events and classes, many buildings, libraries, and student services at the main campus will be closed as well, and there will be an "increased police and security presence on and around campus."

The University of Chicago Medical Center will remain open on Monday but have additional security.

A spokesman for the school contacted by  Mashable  did not give details about the threat or explain how the threat was communicated.

The university, which has an enrollment of nearly 14,500 students, is located in the city's South Side neighborhood, Hyde Park. It also boasts an impressive, celebrated list of alumni from its many schools and programs, including dozens of Nobel laureates.

President Obama taught at the university's school of law from 1992 until 2004, when he was elected to the U.S. Senate, and the Obama family still maintains a home located a half-mile north of the campus' northern edge.

In a  statement posted to the school's website , officials said they were taking the threat seriously and events were canceled due to an abundance of caution in light of "recent tragic events at other campuses across the country." http://www.inquisitr.com/2598829/university-chicago-mass-shooting-threat/#utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Inquisitr+%28Inquisitr%3A+All%29

The new normal ?

Domestic terrorism is the bigger clear and present threat, but we want to dismiss all that to worry about ISIS.
