WASHINGTON — Last week, Republican leaders in the Senate held open a floor vote for an hour, trying to corral support for legislation that would have given the FBI the power to search Americans’ browser histories without a warrant.
I oppose warrantless searches but why is this pitched as though the Republicans dreamed it up all by themselves? The FBI director has stated that obtaining this authority is the FBI's top priority. He is an Obama appointee in an agency under the executive authority of the president. Obama could replace the director at any time if his policy is in conflict with Obama's. Obama has not replaced the director so expanded FBI authority is, by extension, a goal of the Obama administration. Democrats voted against this measure and Obama should explain why his administration sides with Republicans on this issue and takes a contrary position to his own party. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders voted against expanded authority. What is Hillary's position?
