Biden's call for sweeping mask mandate sees no change from Democratic governors
Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden drew widespread attention when he called for a three-month nationwide outdoor mask mandate, and for governors to enact them in their states. But nearly a month later, no Democratic governor has enacted the kind of sweeping order Biden sought.

Another day, another walk back for Joe Biden.  Biden's call for a national mandate has magically morphed into political arm twisting after Democratic governors failed to follow Biden's lead.

Joe Biden's demand for a national mandate drew a lot of headline attention.  Biden's waffling after no one listened hasn't received much attention at all.

Are you ready for President Joe?  Joe Biden could turn the White House into a waffle house.

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden drew widespread attention when he called for a three-month nationwide outdoor mask mandate, and for governors to enact them in their states. But nearly a month later, no Democratic governor has enacted the kind of sweeping order Biden sought.

"Every single American should be wearing a mask when they're outside for the next three months at a minimum," Biden told reporters in Wilmington, Del., on Aug. 13. "Every governor should mandate mandatory mask wearing."

BIDEN CALLS FOR MANDATE REQUIRING ALL AMERICANS TO WEAR MASKS

In June, he had also said he would use federal power to force Americans to wear masks in public. Asked if he would use federal leverage to mandate it, he answered: "Yes, I would. From an executive standpoint, yes, I would."

Making Americans wear a mask whenever they go outside would mark a significant escalation from guidance from experts and many state governments, which either mandate or recommend masks for inside use and only certain outdoor situations.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends wearing a mask "in public settings around people who don't live in your household and when you can't stay 6 feet away from others."

While Biden is not in office to implement any such mandate, a number of Democratic governors throughout the country are in such a position -- but none have yet taken up the call by the presidential nominee of their party to tighten their directives to make Americans wear a mask whenever they are outdoors.

The closest to what Biden envisioned is in Washington, where Mayor Muriel Bowser has mandated wearing masks when they are likely to come into contact with another person.

Most other mandates in Democratic states are limited to indoor situations and outdoors only whenever social distancing is not possible.

In Biden's home state of Delaware, Gov. John Carney mandated masks in public settings like grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants (inside and waiting in line), health care offices, and outdoor public areas if social distancing of six feet is impracticable.

In Minnesota, Gov. Tim Walz mandated in July that Minnesotans must wear a face mask in "indoor businesses and indoor public settings" and that workers must wear masks outside when social distancing is not possible.

BIDEN SAYS HE WOULD 'PRESSURE' LOCAL AUTHORITIES TO ENFORCE MASK WEARING INSTEAD OF NATIONAL MANDATE

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who was considered as a possible Democratic vice presidential nominee, in July mandated masks in any indoor public space, outdoors if unable to consistently maintain a distance of six feet, or on public transportation. That guidance has not been updated since Biden made his announcement.

In Wisconsin, another swing state, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers mandated masks indoors or in an enclosed space.

Other states including California and New York have similar restrictions, urging their residents to wear masks indoors but only outside when social distancing cannot be maintained. The Biden campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

But earlier this week, Biden walked back the threat to wield executive power on the matter, saying he would pressure local officials instead.

"What I would be doing is putting as much pressure as I could on every governor ... every mayor, every county executive, every local official, and everyone in business, putting pressure on them to say, 'What you're doing is irresponsible. Make sure you wear a mask and maintain social distancing,'" he said.

President Trump, meanwhile, has opposed a nationwide mask mandate and said he trusts governors and citizens to make their own decisions.

"Americans must have their freedoms," he said last month in response to Biden's call. "And I trust the American people and their governors very much. I trust the American people. And the governors want to do the right thing to make the smart decisions, and Joe doesn't."

This week he mocked Biden on the issue.

"Did you ever see a man who likes a mask as much as him?" he told supporters Thursday in Pennsylvania.

Asked on Friday to respond to the president's criticism during an event in Delaware, Biden shot back: "I'm a smart fellow. I listen to scientists. This is not a game. Life and death. Life and death."

Are you ready for President Joe?  Joe Biden will be a strong leader if anyone happens to follow.  At least the country will be well supplied with fresh, hot waffles.

I sure am. January 20th cannot come soon enough.

Joe Biden will be a strong leader if anyone happens to follow.

Yes, he will be and he has more than half the nation supporting him.

At least the country will be well supplied with fresh, hot waffles.

Perhaps when dishonest Donald get's out of prison in a few years he'll be able to serve you your desired waffles at some truck stop Waffle House. His fantasy empire is falling, it was all built on a house of cards and will all come crashing down around him after he loses this election and is indicted on numerous charges and his financial records and other criminal activity is exposed.

Joe Biden could turn the White House into a waffle house.

All I would want from a President Biden is to keep the lights on until 2024.    If his administration accomplished nothing other than gridlock then that might be the best case scenario.   ( Get the impression that I have no confidence in our current crop of federal politicians? )

I'm with Tig.

But I got to say, this article cracks me up.

Had Trump, who is actually the President said this, and none of the mayors did it, you would all turn around and say "See, democratic mayors don't want to listen to the President, even if it will help the curb the virus. Hypocrites!

But Biden says it, and since he is not the president he can only suggest it (and btw, that is all Trump can do, since we are a Federalist country) and he gets mocked.

Amazing. The partisanism just blows my mind.

The partisanship over the disease and how to react to it has permeated to just about every aspect of it.  Even in a blue state like California with some of the strictest and most arbitrary rules whether they are complied with or not is a partisan difference and the same with different regions of the state.

Yes, this jrSmiley_115_smiley_image.png literally is silly.   There is no reasonable purpose for someone to wear a mask simply because they are outside.   The mask is only relevant when one is within a few feet of a person outside of one's household.    For example, I see people driving by themselves in cars wearing a mask.   I can see that for Uber drivers or taxi drivers who want to ensure they do not infect their vehicles for future passengers, but outside of that it is largely pointless.

Further, there is no point to wearing a mask when walking one's dog, riding a bike, taking a hike, etc.    There are countless situations where people can be outside without masks and be entirely responsible.

What Biden should have stated would be something like mandating the wearing of masks in every public venue.   Even then there would need to be exceptions such as allowing restaurant patrons seated at a table to eat without wearing a mask.

Or Florida, a red state, where the gov doesn't give a damn about masks and so his state now has one of the worst COVID cases/ deaths in the nation.

See, we can all play the blue/ red state game. It's still partisanism.

One can only be so specific when making soundbite statements and I do not think Biden actually would seek to have everyone wear a mask simply because they stepped outside of their homes.

But that is what the article is saying.  Joe Biden presented himself as a strong, decisive leader who will do what Trump has not done.  You'd think Democratic governors and mayors would follow Biden's lead as if he were President.  Isn't that the objective?

Since Democratic governors and mayors didn't follow, Joe Biden now has to equivocate.  If candidate Biden equivocates then why should we be surprised when President Biden equivocates?

Florida is under control now with declining numbers and has a population larger than New York with nowhere near the same casualties as New York.  In red counties in California we defied a lot of what our governor mandated as individuals and law enforcement used education only and our rates of infection, hospitalization, and death are the lowest in the state.

Trump won't be President much longer.  We already know Joe Biden ain't Trump.  But President Joe isn't planning to hide away in the White House.  Joe Biden won't step aside once Trump is gone.

President Joe is who conservative Republicans want, who the Washington establishment wants, who governors and mayors want, and who political activists want.  Will the country have buyers remorse?

Are you ready for a President Joe?

Every single American should be wearing a mask when they're outside for the next three months at a minimum

See . . . shit like that is insane.

Every American? Why?

3 months? Why? Is there something special about 3 months?

At minimum? Is there an end envisioned? A reasonable benchmark for not wearing a mask?

Due process? Where?

And I say all this as someone who wishes the people in my town would wear masks more. But I want them to do it because we have the virus in our area. And I only expect them to do it when they're around other people - not every time they go outside. In my scenario, there are reasons and the restriction is narrowly focused. That's how government should function.

Instead, a hallmark of progressive politics is the sweeping ban/order/restriction that impacts everyone far more broadly than is necessary. It's government by sledge hammer. Some asshole or handful of assholes commits a crime or does something stupid and then the rest of us can't have nice things anymore.

If Biden tries to push an edict that literally holds true to his sound bite statement and thus has no qualifications then I will agree with you.
