Newly elected House Republican busted as a fraud — weeks after winning his race: report | Salon.com
New York Rep.-elect George Santos' alleged past employers have no record of him working there.

George Santos, who flipped the House seat in New York's 3rd Congressional District last month, made history as the first openly gay Republican to win a House seat as a non-incumbent, but his resume appears to be filled with falsehoods, according to a deep dive by The New York Times.

Santos campaigned on being the "full embodiment of the American dream," and painted himself as a "seasoned Wall Street financier and investor" with an animal rescue charity that saved over 2,500 cats and dogs, The Times reported.

But his portfolio fails to hold up the fictions he sold to voters while on the campaign trail.

Santos' work history listed on his campaign biography mentions that he worked at Citigroup and Goldman Sachs, but both of the Wall Street firms told the Times "they had no record of his ever working there."

Similarly, officials at Baruch College found no record of Santos or anyone with a matching name and date of birth graduating from the college in 2010 despite Santos claiming he received a bachelor's degree in economics and finance.

The Internal Revenue Service also could not locate any record of a registered charity with the name Friends of Pets United - Santos' animal rescue group, which he claimed to run for five years.

He cited the group as proof of a history of philanthropic work while running for the seat. The group held a fundraiser with a New Jersey animal rescue group in 2017, charging $50 for entry. But the event's beneficiary never received any of the funds, according to the report.

The incoming congressman has also claimed to have a family-owned real estate portfolio of 13 properties, but The Times found no records of such properties.

Santos' history also has the potential to pose ethical and even potential legal challenges once he takes office.

Santos omitted key information on his personal financial disclosures and was charged with check fraud in Brazil, according to The Times.

Santos, whose parents emigrated from Brazil, spent some time there in 2008. When he was 19 years old, he stole the checkbook of a man his mother was caring for, according to Brazilian court records uncovered by The Times.

He then used the checkbook to make fraudulent purchases and bought a pair of shoes. Santos confessed to the crime two years later and was ultimately charged, police and court records revealed. But the case remains unresolved, the court and local prosecutor in Brazil confirmed to The Times. Santos did not respond to an official summons, and a court representative could not find him at his given address.

The time period overlapped with when Santos claims he attended Baruch College, but no evidence confirms this to be true.

The National Republican Congressional Committee, which is the House Republicans' campaign arm, claims that Santos attended New York University, but an NYU spokesman found no attendance records matching his name and birth date, The Times reported.

If his resume wasn't enough of a mystery, Santos has also added other fictional tales to his portfolio, claiming that his company "lost four employees" at the Pulse nightclub shooting in June 2016.

But none of the 49 victims appear to have worked at any of the firms named in his biography, according to a Times review of news coverage and obituaries.

Santos did not provide any documentation to refute The Times' reporting, but his lawyer Joe Murray did provide a brief statement accusing the company of "attempting to smear his good name with these defamatory allegations."

Where did the bulk of campaign money come from for Santos?

CNN also confirmed that Santos listed on his 2022 financial disclosure a salary of $750,000 this year and last at the Devolder Organization, which Santos has claimed is a “family firm” managing $80 million in assets. A search for the Devolder Organization found that the business was registered in Florida in 2021 and was most recently temporarily deemed “inactive” by the state after failing to file the required annual reports. A website or LinkedIn profile could not be found, and Santos failed to report any of the clients he served in his financial disclosure.

I guess that the ''money tree'' is active in his campaign.

And then it gets more interesting.

The list of discrepancies is much longer, including how Santos went from allegedly owing $12,000 in back rent payments that led to his eviction – twice – to self-funding his congressional campaign. “Santos failed to disclose any assets or money in his bank accounts on his   2020   PFD, yet loaned his campaign more than $ 80,000 , and has continued to self-fund his 2022 campaign – including a self   loan   of half a million dollars in the first quarter of 2022,” The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC)   warned   in August.

Loans from a family company that isn't in business and showing that he had no assets certainly opens him up to a lot of questions.

The democrats failed to do opposition research that should have caught such 'discrepancies.' This is what happens when the country tries to cheat on high standards and replace those with 'testy' standards!  It's seems players want to join in.

A damn stupid homosexual republican?! Knowing how hard it is to get acceptance in society and the 'first' thing he does on the national stage is being a lying, deceiver?! This is some "f-ed up mess.

I am not blaming the DNC, per se. What is the definition of opposition research if not something like this, Ozzwald? Do tell me. Especially when you consider that the RNC technically is not going to seek DNC approval to run any candidate. The DNC has to cover errors, flaws, and lapses in judgement on any candidate including, but not only, their own. If/only to exploit such 'discoveries' during the campaigning period!

Why are we debating this? Political parties do oppo-research:

Research into one's opponent's family, friends, and past, which aims to uncover activities or interests which embarrass or discredit them. Wiktionary

Sounds like this 'candidate/congressman' was not buried too deep as its common knowledge today and the congressman has not been properly seated, I don't think.

If Santos were to resign, a special election would be called to fill his seat.

The revelations in the Times article also raise questions about why neither the Zimmerman campaign nor the Democratic Party, which lost control of the House of Representatives in the midterms, were unable to uncover the apparent holes in Santos’s biography before the election.

“This story is not a shock,” Zimmerman said, insisting that his campaign “worked to raise many of these issues” uncovered by the Times.

New York state Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs defended the Zimmerman campaign, telling CNN, “It’s unfair to blame the campaign for opposition research work that it did because the resources of a campaign are not as significant as a paper like the New York Times.”

“The important thing is to focus on George Santos,” Jacobs added. “He’s got a lot of explaining to do.”

I am not trying in any way to make democrats a victim, but, but, but, how hard can it be to know if a candidate you're opposing is who she says s/he is with several factors standing in stark 'relief'?

This republican told one "h" of a good/bad lie! I get it. The republicans did not vet Santos properly, and as it turns out, at least to me anyway, the democrats were lazy in letting this seat go because of 'lesser' oppo research.

. Obviously, it is the one that got away! And, I am willing to bet it won't happen again when a house or senate seat lose is in need of protecting. With this comment, I rest my case

You’re not wrong.

But according to court records obtained by The Daily Beast, Santos appears to be the subject of a previously unacknowledged Sept. 2019 divorce with a woman in Queens County, New York. The divorce—which Santos has not discussed publicly—adds new uncertainty to his already shaky biographical and political claims.

I am openly gay, have never had an issue with my sexual identity in the past decade, and I can tell you and assure you, I will always be an advocate for LGBTQ folks,” Santos told USA Today in October, responding to criticism about his support for Florida’s so-called “ Don’t Say Gay Bill ” signed into law this year by GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Less than two weeks after his divorce was finalized, Santos filed the official paperwork to launch his 2020 campaign. And while his 2022 campaign bio mentions his husband, who according to Santos lives with him and their four dogs on Long Island, he’s kept this previous marriage out of the public eye entirely.

George Santos claims to be a supporter of Kevin McCarthy.

McCarthy needs every vote he can get for Speaker of the House.

So don't expect any action by Republicans.

Santos is a lying fraudster and he's a cocksucker, so he fits right in with the fucking Republican caucus.

Who claims Biden is squeaky clean?   But Biden (and every other PotUS) did not use a portfolio of dishonest , damaging, and arguably criminal tactics

While I realize the following is not directly Santos related, it brings up how easily the GOP has embraced lying. The party of now lawlessness and disorder feel that lying just ain't no thang.

Article worth the entire read

All presidents lie. Richard Nixon said he was not  a crook, yet he orchestrated the most shamelessly crooked act in the modern presidency. Ronald Reagan said he wasn’t aware of the Iran-Contra deal; there’s evidence he was. Bill Clinton said he did not have sex with that woman; he did, or close enough. Lying in politics transcends political party and era. It is, in some ways, an inherent part of the profession of politicking.

But Donald Trump is in a different category. The sheer frequency, spontaneity and seeming irrelevance of his lies have no precedent . Nixon, Reagan and Clinton were protecting their reputations; Trump seems to lie for the pure joy of it. A whopping  70 percent  of Trump’s statements that PolitiFact checked during the campaign were false, while only 4 percent were completely true, and 11 percent mostly true. (Compare that to the politician Trump dubbed “crooked,” Hillary Clinton: Just  26 percent of her statements were deemed false.) [Emphasis mine.]

Those who have followed Trump’s career say his lying isn’t just a tactic, but an ingrained habit. New York tabloid writers who covered Trump as a mogul on the rise in the 1980s and ’90s  found him  categorically different from the other self-promoting celebrities in just how often, and pointlessly, he would lie to them. In his own autobiography, Trump used the phrase  “truthful hyperbole,”  a term coined by his ghostwriter referring to the flagrant truth-stretching that Trump employed, over and over, to help close sales. Trump apparently loved the wording, and went on to adopt it as his own.

From another enlightened article .

Lies aren’t new on the American political scene.

Some politicians seemed to get away with antisocial lying, as with Bill Clinton’s deceit about his sexual infidelities; other careers were destroyed by deception, as happened with Eliot Spitzer and Anthony Weiner, among others. But historians and political scientists like Edwards seem to agree: The scale, frequency, impact, and brazenness of Trump’s lies are unprecedented.

* * * *

“Our party becomes a part of our self-concept in deep and meaningful ways,” he  writes . This self-concept includes racial identity. Several  studies  have  shown  that reminding white conservatives of President Obama’s race made them much more likely to believe that, for example, he is a  Muslim born in Kenya . If they do not  feel  Obama is one of them, this work suggests, then they are more receptive to unfounded claims that dramatize their  emotional truth .

Scientists call this kind of reasoning “directionally motivated,” meaning that conclusions are driven by feelings, not facts—and studies find that this is our default mode. As right-wing radio talk host Rush Limbaugh  implied  in the wake of a lie-riddled presidential press conference, facts don’t matter. What matters is what’s “in your heart.” It takes conscious effort to override directionally motivated reasoning.

That’s why, when the truth threatens our identity, that  truth gets dismissed . For millions and millions of Americans, climate change is  a hoax , Hillary Clinton  ran a sex ring  out of a pizza parlor, and immigrants  cause crime . Whether they truly believe those falsehoods or not is debatable—and  possibly irrelevant . The research to date suggests that  they see those lies  as useful weapons in a tribal us-against-them competition that pits the “real America” against those who would destroy it.

Indeed, when I told the truth in the first sentence of this piece and said Donald Trump lies, I almost certainly inflamed readers who identify with the president and see him as their champion. The truth may feel like an attack on who they are, as human beings.

Here we come to the role of anger.

Sociologists like  Arlie Hochschild  and  Katherine J. Cramer  have f ound widespread rage and resentment among GOP voters, specifically against educated, urban liberals. Other studies have found extreme hostility for constituencies that are perceived as Democratic, such as women, immigrants, and African-Americans.  [Emphasis mine.]

The difference between the GOP and democrats ... democrats called for Al Franken to step down due to what was deemed "an inappropriate comment." I haven't seen one GOPer call out Santos. There may have been some that have denounced Santos, but I've not seen it.

Just a bit of light reading to while away time until it's midnight in your parts.

All my wishes for  all to have a safe and sane New Year's Eve, and wishes for a joyous and healthy 2023 filled with new adventures and good fortune.

Right-O! "Champion" is what the GOP MAGAns saw/see in Donald Trump. That is, the GOP was primed in 2016 for someone to enter the political 'theater' and go political 'berserker' on liberals and progressives who had entrapped the GOP politicians in the muck and mire of their own moral righteousness and political standards. Donald Trump must have told the assemblage of GOP candidates and supporters he could get them out of "PC politics" if they just let him be himself! Lo and behold what manifested was a group of supporters very much in the vein of Trump himself; they unleashed and sic'ed on a slow to catch up public.

Donald Trump was given license to behave with malice, disruption, and outrage. Even so, I don't think even 'base-level' republicans/conservative knew the subterranean depths Donald Trump intended to plumb, blowing way pass the detour signs and crashing everything he navigated.

Trump is the right-wing champion sent out to eat liberals, now that the liberals are fighting back, Donald will and has chosen to turn and 'have' his own supporters served up! As a champion must stay 'fed' and able to leap tall buildings!

Oh and by the way, Santos is 'next level down' attraction below Trump.

Happy New Year, Cobaltblue.

The owning the libs shtick is getting old fast.

Tell it to Truth Social, Twitter and other social media sites where the term is used with regularity.

From 2018:

“RAISE YOUR HAND if you’ve ever posted anything online to quote unquote own the libs,” President Trump’s Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley recently asked a crowd of high schoolers. Most of the teens in the audience raised their hands, then exploded into uproarious applause. “I know that it’s fun and that it can feel good,” Haley continued, “But step back and think about what you’re accomplishing when you do this — are you persuading anyone? Who are you persuading?”

It would be ironic for a Trump official to admonish the youth for inflammatory political tactics if irony hadn’t died in 2016. But with Haley’s utterance of the phrase IRL, the concept of “owning the libs” officially went mainstream.

To “own” someone on the internet is to dominate and humiliate them, and the “libs” can loosely be defined as anyone to the left of Sean Hannity. If you hate yourself enough to read political commentary all day on Twitter dot com, you already know that “owning the libs” is an often-sung refrain.  [Emphasis mine.]

So it appears your " no one wants to own a lib" means you're wrong. Again. As to whether or not you care about owning libs:

Trump is the only PotUS in the history of our nation who has engaged in a two month long Big Lie campaign where he refused to allow the normal transfer of power, abused the authority of his office by claiming the electoral system of our nation was "rigged / corrupt", and encouraged people to act on this.   He is the only PotUS who has attempted to coerce myriad officials to "find votes" for him, to coerce a state Speaker to deliver an alternate set of fake electors, to suborn his own V.P. to unconstitutionally table certified election results from states he lost so that he could win the presidency via plurality, and he no doubt has the record for frivolous lawsuits challenging election results.

There is no comparing Trump, per the Big Lie campaign, with any other PotUS in our history.

Word of warning here , i have been "imbibibing " of a most excellent , single barrel bourbon , so i will be bias here due to what my butcher of 50 yrs father taught me .

meat doesnt have to be "tough ", though ther are some things that are out of human control. but if meat is generally treated as to cool it quickly , , insuring cleanliness , and processed in the least amount of time ( piss off kosher ) it really does turn out better . most meats condition is affected by its treatment AFTER  it is no longer alive..

My coat of arms has an ostrich plume and a unicorn horn  and some lions , if one unanglenisized  my surname , it translates to son of the bear  , meat is meat if it means survival, think any of that other stuff matters really?

So which is better ? be alive and talk about it  or, have someone reading  about it

Prosecutors in Brazil are seeking to renew charges against Santos in relation to a 2008 criminal case, a spokesperson for the Rio de Janeiro prosecutor's office tells ABC News.

The case involves Santos allegedly paying for goods with a stolen checkbook when he was 19, the prosecutor's spokesperson said.

What a shady fuck. The government needs paper receipts for expenditures of $200 and over.

Additional revelations came this week that Santos’ campaign team reported 37 expenditures between April 2021 and February 2022 — including exactly $199.99 each. This figure is one percent less than the minimum amount required for receipts by federal law.

The $199.99 spending spree includes rooms at the Hyatt Orlando Hotel and W Hotel South Beach, as well as staples and office supplies at Target. Ubers, airline flights, Amtrak tickets, John F. There were meals at Kennedy Airport parking and Paco Ristorante in The Little Neck, Queens.

* * * *

Santos also listed expenses north of $199, including Brooks Brothers expenses for more than $1,000 worth of clothing. Another $713 was for “food and beverages” for an event at The Breakers, an ultra-luxury hotel in Palm Beach.

Santos wined and dined his donors at trendiest New York and Washington, D.C. spots, including Il Mulino and Joe’s Stone Crab, to the tune of $660 and $710, respectively, FEC forms show.

Heroism involves sacrifice,  and  there was no sacrifice involved at all .

So why did Kinzinger and his family receive vile and disgusting threats on their lives?

Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., on Tuesday shared a compilation of expletive-laden and threatening voicemails and phone calls recently made to his office.

"Threats of violence over politics has increased heavily in the last few years. But the darkness has reached new lows," Kinzinger wrote on Twitter, describing the audio as "foul and graphic."

* * * *

Many of the calls include death wishes and threats toward the Illinois congressman and his family.

One caller said he hopes Kinzinger "naturally dies as quickly as f---ing possible," and another wished he'd get terminal cancer. Another said he knows where Kinzinger's family lives and are going to "get you... gonna get your wife, gonna get your kids." And another suggested he would "swing for f---ing treason."

One of the threats included religious language, wishing for the "wrath of the Lord God Almighty" to come down on Kinzinger and his family. Another called Kinzinger a "backstabbing son of a b----" for going against former President Donald Trump.

Kinzinger is a hero because the cowardly pigs that call themselves supporters of Trump made his life hell. It didn't matter. He put America first. Gerrymandering notwithstanding, he's a hero.

Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger on Tuesday released a three-minute audio clip of recent threatening calls his office has received, highlighting the increased harassment he and his family have faced in light of his participation in the House committee investigating the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021.

"Threats of violence over politics has increased heavily in the last few years. But the darkness has reached new lows," Kinzinger tweeted. "My new interns made this compilation of recent calls they've received while serving in my DC office."

In one call, a person threatened to come to Kinzinger's house and go after his wife and his newborn baby.

"I'm going to come to protest in front of your house this weekend," the caller said. "We know where your family is, and we're going to get you ... We're going to get your wife, going to get your kids."

Lol . Project much?  First, You call Kinzinger a hero for giving up his political career to attack Trump and do the right thing.  Then, when you find out he gave up his career because his seat got gerrymandered out of existence, you say it doesn't matter that he didn't give up his career  to attack Trump.  He's a hero  because he was insulted and received threats.

Are you even self aware enough to see how you just moved the goal posts to save face?  Find a new M.O. This is getting stale.

Your answer was strange.   I do not think "Not at all" is consistent with your following sentence.

I will assume that you think Haakeem Jeffries is a scumbag.

Who is not a scumbag, in your opinion?     Are there any good Ds?

Do you consider Fred Upton a scumbag?

I do not think my answer was strange at all as I answered you in the context of your question.

You are correct in that I do not like Jeffries at all and think he is a scumbag. That is just my opinion for whatever it is worth.

There are a lot of good Democrats, just as there are a lot of good Republicans. As to who I consider a good Democrat, and some hard core liberals would disagree, Tulsi Gabbard is one wo comes to mind right off hand, Most others do not happen to be in DC.

As to Fred Upton, I know almost nothing about him so it is difficult to give a informed opinion.

Tulsi Gabbard's Dem Decision Fuels Speculation She's Trump's VP Choice

BY AILA SLISCO ON 10/12/22 AT 12:10 AM EDT

Former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard 's decision to leave the Democratic Party has some wondering whether she could be former President Donald Trump 's future running mate.

Gabbard announced on Tuesday in a video shared to social media that she was no longer a Democrat, and said the party was being led by "an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness" who promote "anti-white racism." She went on to say that she was leaving the party to become an Independent in part because she believed Democrats were bringing the world "ever closer to nuclear war."

Many were not surprised by Gabbard's move away from the Democratic Party. The former congresswoman has repeatedly promoted anti-LGBT positions, taken a pro-Russia stance on the war in Ukraine that is more in line with the American far-right than the left and advocated against "woke" culture since the end of her failed 2020 presidential campaign as a Democrat.

Tulsi Gabbard is definitely not a Democrat.  Her reactionary extremist positions (core GOP values) put her right in line with the scumbags in the Republican Party.

As for Hakeem Jeffries, he is a great leader and an outstanding guy.  He will make a great Speaker when the Anerican voters reject the Republicans and return the Democrats to the majority in the 2024 election.

Zach Everson
Forbes Staff

T he largest individual donor to former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s (D-Hawaii) PAC in 2021 is an apologist for Vladimir Putin who runs a nonprofit that aims to foster cooperation between the U.S. and Russia. Gabbard has long taken pro-Russian positions , most recently on Sunday when she gave credence to a baseless Russian-supported conspiracy about U.S. involvement in biological-weapons laboratories in Ukraine.

Eric Carmen, "All By Myself" (live)

Eric Carmen - All By MySelf (HQ)

Celine Dion, "All By Myself (live)

Céline Dion - All By Myself (Taking Chances World Tour: The Concert)

Actually, I call it a tie. Here's why. Many, many years ago when I first heard this song it was Eric Carmen's version 'done' on the radio station. I fell in love with the sentiment, being a relatively 'alone' person transversing this life. For me, I could feel 'hurt' in the song. . . . And so I used to sing-a-long. Different for me, because back in '75 I was not 'tuned in' to classic rock music (that came later). I would hear it through other means.

With Celine, it is different. I felt in love with Celine from the moment she took my breath away with, "The Heart Will Go On and On" (by then, I was squarely in the Rock category (too)). So when she sang, "All By Myself" —she 'slayed' the remake.

One thing I did not process until just now: I did not know that the "big power note" done in Celine's version is not in the Carmen version. (I kept waiting for Mr. Carmen to reach up for it, and it did not come.)

You spoke about energy, well I have never seen Celine Dion perform, "The Heart Will Go On and On" until TONIGHT!

Talk about the 'bigness' of this woman's voice and presence: (Still, right now, I get a lump in my throat when she sings this song.)

Oh my. Total tear inducing. Celine is in a class by herself.

I found myself crying when I popped in an old cd during a road trip and this song came on. It surprised the hell out of me. Unbelievably and luckily, no one's ever broken my heart. But the thought that someone could feel that way hurt my soul. Plus I love both kd and Roy. Both beautiful singers.

I enjoyed the 'throat' work (perfect in its delicacy and not overdone) to end this "mega" powerful song. You want to know something: I have never taken out time to watch TITANIC, but that track NAILS ME TO THE WALL EVERY TIME!

That presentation, that gown (and I don't know diddly about women's clothing) were brilliant. She is worth all the praise and value placed on her as an entertainer and from what I read of her as a person too. There are singers who remind me of the fantastic "Gaia" goddess of mother Earth who has power in her ability to sing to her planet effortlessly of its beauty, and tragic ugliness. Celine Dion is of that class.

RO and KD, great together. A classic sound and song choice. Landing each note and holding 'em with perfect pitch and pacing.

Now. . . let me come down off cloud NINE and back to the real world of Santos' subpar congressional 'altitude.' jrSmiley_103_smiley_image.jpg

This exhibition of republican disfunction, exemplifying their total disregard for this country and showcasing their traitorous leanings, will go into tomorrow. The second anniversary of when their fellow traitors shit and pissed on the floor of this nation's capitol and chanted for the hanging of Pence, among other disgusting acts. The GOP is now thoroughly entrenched in humiliating themselves.

They turned the US Capitol into a craphouse.

Some invading rioters defiled the hallowed seat of democracy with their dung in their ill-fated effort to overturn the election, a source close to incoming Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told The Post.

“Congressional staffers saw feces in the hallways,” the source said Friday.

The vile vandals apparently took dumps in bathrooms and then spread around their poop, a Schumer insider said.

“It came from the bathroom and they tracked it around,” the source said. “There was an intentional effort to degrade the Capitol building.”

Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) of Brooklyn also reported that some members of the mob urinated on the floors during the rampage.

“There was urine. There was clear desecration,” he told WNYC on Thursday.
