Photos with Pathways and Leading Lines I Have Taken Over the Years
A.Mac has recently posted a photo-essay on the Photography and Art forum about paths and leading lines, with this introduction:
A "PATH," or "TRAIL" is an embodiment of what graphic artists such as painters and photographers refer to as, and, often exploit in their art … " Leading lines" which, refers to a composition technique whereby the viewer's eye is attracted to lines that lead directly to the principle subject in the image.
I am posting here a series of photos, all but two I have taken over the past decade in China, that provide examples of paths and leading lines. Most of them have been posted on NT already, but this is a specific compendium bringing together examples from all those years. They are in no particular order.
1. This photo of a logging trail was taken by me almost half a century ago with my Canon F1 SLR. It was in the remote Killaloe area of Ontario, west of Ottawa.
2. Nobody said a path had to be on land. A canal, a river or stream all can provide leading lines.
3. As well, the path need not be through forests, but can be paved and straight.
4. No reason for the leading lines not to be a pedestrian mall.
5. On top of a mountain. leading the eye to a mother and child.
6. Sometimes a path can be kind of scary.
7. Perhaps through a field of wildflowers.
8. Steps between the rocks
9. Just in case it rains
10. Into the verdant paradise
11. Framed by a gate
12. A path to explore
13. Or a quiet place to study
14. Leading lines can be formed by objects
15. Or umbrellas
16. Strong leading lines on a subway platform
17. The leading line formed by a bridge during the day...
18. ...and at night
19. One of my favourite photos, taken during Lantern Festival in Chongqing.
20. And finally, the walk leads you to the front door of the first house I ever owned, a photo taken in Toronto almost half a century ago.
