The 35th Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival kicked off on Saturday in Harbin, capital city of northeastern China's Heilongjiang province.

As part of the festivities, the Harbin Ice and Snow World, a 600,000-square-meter park, officially opened for the 20th consecutive year. The park is each winter built with ice rather than commonly used construction materials.

In the park, tourists can appreciate famous traditional Chinese and Gothic architecture, along with a 45-meter-high tower, all built from ice.

The ice and snow festival will run till the end of February.

Ever since I've been here in China I have wanted to go see this amazing display, but I never got around to it. Perhaps I will one of these years.

Read more about the Ice Festival on Wikipedia:

Well, I should have known. The wonders to be seen have nothing to do with Trump or religion.  I think this web site should be renamed "TheTrumpTalkers".

I must have been dreaming to think that this article could be of interest to the members of NT.

Buzz,

While interest generally on NT is disappointing with regard to such articles, because few will actively search for such, posting them in a Group, IMO, makes it even less likely that they will draw interested members.

I have found this to be resoundingly the case with regard to photo articles … they are hit-or-miss even when posted to the Home/FP. A sad fact … but a fact nevertheless.

But we do promote some of our articles to the Front Page, and you may note that I provide a method for persons who are not group members to join the group if they wish to comment - it is advertising for the groups, and it has worked well at least with my movie articles.

The problem is really because so many members are obsessed with Trump or religion - our articles require a modicum of culture that is missing in those so obsessed, or with those who are on this site only to criticize and insult others, giving vent to what pervades their personna but won't if they can be identified.

The great number of Trump/Religion articles posted by those obsessed members quickly push other articles off the Front Page so they don't get noticed by many members who could be interested.  Because of the time difference that I live in, I have often missed articles that I would have found interesting had I seen them, and only sometimes I am lucky to find them when they pop up when someone posts a comment on them.

I have been criticized by one member who points out that this is a SOCIAL NEWS  SITE, so I should expect that news is the most important topic and Trump is in the news most of the time.  Unfortunately, I cannot argue with that.

Back when the Moderate and Balanced group was active, the members planned to all post a number of articles at a specific time that had nothing to do with politics or religion, and we almost succeeded in having the Front Page "politics/religion-free" for a short time.

I think it is important to do a Front Page special article telling the members to take the time to adjust their settings on their profile page, and in particular to adjust the one for group mail notifications to allow for email or PN notifications.  If they do, then responsible group administrators can send group mail to their members about new and interesting articles that have been posted.  Most groups have only a small percentage of members that actually post articles or even comment on them, and I believe many don't bother checking to see what's new but at least if they receive a group message it could revitalize them.

Just noticed this Buzz.

I have heard great stories about the Quebec City Ice Festival and have considered making the trip.   Have you ever visited Quebec during the Ice Festival when you were in Canada?

Anyway, these pictures are awesome.   I cannot imagine Quebec coming anywhere close to something like this.   How on Earth did they build the Ice Castle?

Sorry that I had to appear so impatient, but it's just that the accomplishments of the ice sculptors in Harbin are so magnificent, I thought it would be interesting to some of our members.

No, I never visited the Quebec winter festival, although I was aware of it, and aware that they created an ice hotel there, where even the beds are made of ice (although they provide comfortable sleeping bags on top of them).

They do indeed have the Ice Hotel but during the festival I understand they build a substantial ice castle.   Just cannot imagine it being anything like what you are showing here.

And I share your concern on the Trump obsession.

My daughter just came back from Quebec City and they said they had a wonderful time. This is her 4th time there, counting the time she was there with us when she was a kid.

We love it there, too and are planning on going there in the spring. It's like Europe in North America and it's also the oldest city here, too.

It pays to be able to speak French if you go there. Although I used my incompetent French when ordering in a restaurant and the waiter called me "Anglais-tete" (English head) which was not a nice expression.

I've been trying all morning to comment in there and must have "joined" half a dozen times!

Anyway....I like their use of light. This takes some patience to sculpt.

The closest I've ever come to ice sculptures is the sculptures they do in Fairbanks at their annual festival. Saw somebody sculpting with a chain saw.

I don't know why you had a problem joining the group. Perhaps you can describe what happened to you to Perrie,

Chain saws are also used by sculptors in Harbin as well.
