Turkey PM says coup attempt underway, elected government still in charge

A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV.

"The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."

Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.

Footage on local television channels showed military vehicles blocking bridges over the Bosphorus in Istanbul and tanks deployed at the city's main airport. In the capital Ankara, warplanes and helicopters roared overhead. A Reuters journalist heard gunshots.

A Turkish official who did not want to be named said soldiers had been deployed in other cities in Turkey, but did not specify which ones.

Dogan News Agency reported the national police directorate had summoned all police to duty in Ankara.

Turkish military just announced that they have taken control of the government.

It's very confusing, and there is no clear indication of who is in charge.

Military just announced on TV that they have established a ''peace council''....

All flights from Istanbul's Ataturk Airport have been canceled, a Reuters witness said on Friday, citing a pilot, after the military said it had taken control of the government.

Turkey's armed forces said on Friday they had taken power in the country to protect the democratic order and to maintain human rights.

The repercussions will be huge if the coup successful.

The military is much more friendly to the US than the current government.

Also with Egypt.

Their relations with Egypt have been tense ever sine the Egyptians kicked out their fascist, terror-supporting Muslim Brotherhood gov't (led by Morsi). But that a  bit off-topic...

I hope this coup is successful like the one in Egypt was.  That President was tilting toward ISIS and more like a Sunni version of Iran.  Coups are not generally a good thing but in this case like Egypt and Honduras is an exception.

One thing is for sure, no matter which way Obama positions the U.S. on this, the political right will say he was wrong.

It is an interesting conundrum for the administration as the policy thus far had been support of elected Democracies. Does the US also support a country's military interceding to protect their Democracy (I know things are murky now, and I am presuming much)?

Seems like the military has lost the momentum. The erdogen protesters are ignoring the military.

If they won't fire on the people, it's over.

If the military wasn't absolutely assured of victory they never should have started it. I similar scenario can be seen in the movie "Valkarie" with Tom Cruise as the protagonist.

Considering that Erdoğan was elected in a democratic election, but is now in the process of turning Turkey into a fundamentalist Islamic dictatorship (and (sometimes violently) purging any opposition in the political and military spectrum), I wonder just how far America should go in supporting him? He is in the process into turning Turkey into the next Saddam Hussein controlled Iraq and do we want to go through all of that again? I mean he is proposing changing the Turkey Constitution to make it possible for him to declare himself President for life. Perhaps a secularist revolution would do Turkey well. He may have been democratically elected, but he is showing he has no intention of holding onto power that way.

We've seen this movie too many times before. Is America ready to support another Shah of Iran or Saddam Hussein? Yes I know even his opposition has supported him in this coup, but I suspect that's only because they feel it'll be easier for them to get rid of him then a secular military controlled government.

I can't believe it Randy.  You and I actually agree on at least two things.  You son is a damn good guitar player and your comment above is my exact sentiments, but you're not going to like what I have to say next.

Obama supported Morsi and Keith Ellison for all practical purposes said we're not going to furnish Egypt any more support if the military doesn't put him back in power even after he was turning Egypt into an Islamic State ruled by Sharia Law.

As Krisha said:  Their relations with Egypt have been tense ever since the Egyptians kicked out their fascist, terror-supporting Muslim Brotherhood gov't (led by Morsi). But that a  bit off-topic...

And President Ergodan is blaming the coup on the "Gulen Movement" led by Turkish Islamic scholar and preacher Fethullah Gulen, which is defined as a pacifist, modern-oriented version of Islam, and as an alternative to more extreme schools of Islam, I would expect Obama to be critical of the coup as he was of the Egyptian coup and support President Ergodan.

Read:

Gülen movement

Now, what do we get out of all of this?  First, the people will go with whoever they think is going to win in this battle even if they really don't support it, because most will be driven by their fear rather than their desire to change anything.  They certainly don't want to be on the loser's side when the crap hits the fan.

In general, I've heard two sides of Turkey good and bad.  I really don't know which is true.

That is the first I've heard of the Gulen movement, and the fact that Erdogan considers it a "parallel government" which threatens his dictatorship makes it an attractive alternative, besides the fact that the adherents are truly peace-supporting Muslims. Unfortunately it does not have enough adherents to make it a viable alternative as yet.

I know we (our government) is supporting Erdoğan because he was democratically elected and the US does not want to be seen as inferring with a freely elected leader. That said, since he has become President he is consolidating power in a way that may make Turkey stable (which we not only want, but need), but is leading toward an Islamic dictatorship ala Saddam Hussein in Turkey. That we can not have, especially as a member of NATO. I have a feeling we are backing the wrong horse in the short term for short term goals, but will be very sorry we did so in the long term.

Then again maybe it's because I'm on my 3rd double scotch on the rocks?
