Virginia College Student Gets 100 Days In Prison For Election Fraud

On Tuesday, a Virginia college student was sentenced to 100 days in prison . His crime? Registering deceased individuals to vote for the Virginia Democratic Party.

In 2016, Andrew Spieles, a 21-year-old student at James Madison University, was told to  "register as many voters as possible" for the organization Harrisonburg Votes, an affiliate of the Democratic Party.

Spieles and other volunteers would go out and register people to vote, then go back to the Democratic Campaign headquarters in Harrisonburg and enter the names into a computer database.

In August 2016, someone noticed that a name on the database belonged to the dead father of a famed local judge . This led to the discovery of 18 names of deceased individuals Spieles had entered into the system. Whoops.

Spieles admitted that he had entered in the fraudulent voter registration forms. After a court hearing in the Western District of Virginia this week, he was sentenced to 100 days in prison.

Election fraud is a federal crime punishable by a $100,000 to 100 to 120 days in prison.

Considering the number of deceased voters turning up it looks like the DNC is making this part of their strategy

Weird strategy considering the number is 0.  Try another big lie.

100 days seems a little low for screwing with the very fundamentals of our system.

The sad thing is that he didn't have to add any dead people since there are plenty still on the rolls.  This points out a vulnerability in the system that must be dealt with.  Voter registration must be done by the DMV and sworn election board workers.  Proof of identity and residence must be shown when  a person registers.  No more paid by interest group workers who get paid by the number of forms they return.

Federal law requires list maintenance.  The dems scream bloody murder when it happens.  Got to keep those dead voters voting dem!

Once again demonstrating the eternal life of a rightwing vampire lie.  Now matter how many truth stakes are driven into its heart it always survives.  Repubs remove legally registered voters from the rolls and then tell themselves how much they love our democratic system.  It's puke making but that's who they are.

This is not voting fraud, but registration fraud.  They are not at all the same thing despite the lying the rightwing does to try to make it so. None of these fictitious entries voted.  Dead people do not resurrect themselves.  Fact is, actual voter fraud is extremely rare and when it does happen it's more likely to be done by republicans:

Three of only 4 proven cases of actual voter fraud in 2016 were republicans:

A woman in Iowa who voted twice.  Terri Lynn Rote had the enormous misfortune of bad timing. Right as the candidate she supported, Trump, was drawing attention to fraud cases, Rote  decided to try to vote twice  in Des Moines, and got caught. The case made national headlines simply by virtue of the fact that it happened when it did, and that she voted for Trump.

For what it's worth, she suggested that the fault lay with Trump. “The polls are rigged,” she said to a local radio station by way of explaining her multiple votes, echoing another of Trump's complaints.

A man in Texas who voted twice.  Phillip Cook  was arrested  on Election Day after voting twice. He claimed to be an employee of Trump's campaign who was testing the security of the electoral system. He wasn't an employee of the campaign — and the polling location's security worked perfectly well, it seems.

A woman who cast a ballot on behalf of her dead husband.  Audrey Cook is a Republican election judge in Illinois . She and her husband applied for absentee ballots because he was ill. He died before completing his, so she filled it out for him and  sent it in . The ballot will not be counted.

Of course facts will never actually stop lying rightwingers from lying.

Cases that were caught.  In 17 states to get a ballot one needs only to say a name of a registered voter and get a ballot.  Unless the real voter shows up there is no way to ever catch it.

There are ways to have a secure election and not keep eligible voters from voting.
