Flagging, Violations, Suspensions, Playing Moderator, Announcing Flags, and Gang Bangs.

Good day NT'ers

I am writing this to inform the NT community about a couple of items that need to be addressed, now that most of our new members have settled in and have found their footing.

Flagging

I have noticed that some of you don't understand what is a flaggable offense. Flagging is only when a comment breaks the Code of Conduct (CoC) or Terms of Service (ToS). (You can find both the CoC and the ToS at the bottom of every page). Flagging is not for when you don't like a comment. It is not when a disparaging comment is made about a public figure or political party. It is not about generalities about a group of people. It is specifically when an insult or disparaging comment is directly, (a CoC violation) or indirectly (skirting the CoC), to a member of the NT community.

NT has two kinds of violations:

A CoC violation is a straight up insult.

Example: You must be a mental moron to make that comment.

Skirting the CoC is when you try to be clever and make and "couch" the comment in a way that you don't think it will be noticed as an insult.

Example: Only a moron could make a comment like that, is skirting the CoC.

On the other hand, comments can be insulted as long as it's not directed to the commenter.

Example: That comment is pretty lame, is OK.

But...

Example You have to be pretty lame to make that comment, is a CoC violation.

Special note: Images or memes meant to degrade a member will be considered a CoC violations.

One final note. There are a few members who abuse the flagging system with comments that are not CoC violations. This will result in the removal of your flagging privileges.

Suspensions

Unlike previous sites where suspensions were handed out without rhyme or reason, here we have an exact formula for it.

3 skirting the CoC's =1 CoC violation

4 CoC violations in a month =2 day suspension

If you repeat within a month period then the suspensions double. i.e... 4 days for your next, 8 days for your next and so on.

Your slate is wiped clean at the end of the month and you have a fresh start at the beginning of each month. It is up to the individual to keep track of their CoC violations. You will only be notified of a suspension when it happens.

Playing Moderator and Announcing Flags

Please DO NOT tell a member that they are breaking the CoC. It just disrupts the article. If someone is breaking the CoC, flag the comment. The same thing applies to making announcements that you have flagged another member's comment. Again, this just disrupts the article. If a mod has to remind you too often, there will be a violation handed out.

Gang Bangs

A "Gang Bang" is defined when a single member is singled out for attacks on their comments by a bunch of people who share a particular POV or are known friends. This will not be tolerated. A warning will be issued. Once that warning is issued, and the behavior is continued, a 2 day suspension will be handed out by those who didn't heed the warning. Included in this, is the use of emoticons that are directed to one member only and are being used on every comment that one member make. If this happens there will be a suspension and the emoticons will be taken away by those involved.

These rules are not new. I had put them on hold while the new members got used to the site. That grace period is over. I will leave this article up for reference on the left side of the page in the "Columnist" section. I will be leaving comments open for questions, but not for debate about the these guidelines, since they have been well established here.

Remember NT is for everyone's enjoyment. These guidelines are only here to help maintain that enjoyment.

The grace period is over for suspensions and we go back to our regular rules today. This has been marked in the moderators groups, so no worries about past offenses.

LOL Elaine.. that was a funny comment. I remember you from NV and I don't think you have anything to worry about, but bannings are few and far between. The short list would include (but not limited to):

  1. Continuous long term bad behavior that doesn't change or gets worse.
  2. Purposely tampering with the site or abusing its systems.
  3. Posting another member's private information
  4. Threatening another member

Rather interesting.

Don't worry about me breaking rules. Don't worry about people ganging up on me either. Being equally hated and loved by partisans from both sides makes that inevitable.

How quickly the word spreads. LOL, even on a slow Thursday afternoon. See you just came back online Perri. A pleasant afternoon to you. If my presence worries you. Not looking for trouble, won't hide from it either. Just primarily curious to see if this will be more than another echo chamber like many of the other groups Viners fled to.

We will see what we see. By the looks of this article and conversation you have your hands full.

Place has changed a lot but I should be able to figure it out rather quickly, most of these Facebook groups are similar in their formats.

For those who doubt this is really me, all I can say is Hoot ! Hoot !

Just primarily curious to see if this will be more than another echo chamber like many of the other groups Viners fled to.

It's not, for several reasons:

First of all, most "Viners apparently wanted an echo chambe-- they don't like dissenting views. And since the vast majority of NV were left of center, dissenting views meant any that were right of center.

But here on NT, there are a good number of both conservatives and liberals. At any given monment it might seem like one group is dominant-- but it changes back and forth.

Secondly, there are a number of prominent NT users who are really quite intelligent-- so they don't waste their time engaging in stupid, endless partisan political arguments designed solely to "score points".

There are a large number and seeds and articles that are about all sorts of things...non-political.

To quickly get a feel for how this site is so different than NV-- why not start here:

So, We Have Lots Of New Folks Here, Let's Get To Know Each Other

read over the comments--- note the overall tone of the conversation (And there are people participating from both the left and the right there).

Well said, Krishna. There is nothing to be gained with political name calling pissing matches. It's like two groups of elementary kids out on the school grounds throwing childish names back and forth at each other. The only ones that get anything out of that kind of pissing match are those who can't rise to even the pre-teen level much less adult level.

I refuse to engage in any dialog with anyone who throws those political denigrating and childish names around in their comments to me. And I have made that very clear to a few here what seem to feel that is the only kind of language people can understand. And it comes from both sides of the political aisle.

Well that looks like some good news!applause bow to you

Gang attacks yak yak devil was the Main thingy thing at Newsvine, Disqus and almost all other sites on the Web for years, since the early 2000s especially from Leftists. It was a good day for the Internet on October the 1st. when finally the NV site closed.

Disqus and Fox have been able to reduce these by allowing the author of a Comment to block and delete direct and personal attacks to her/his comments by those who do so when replying. Also the Trolls have been reduced to a small annoyance. Heck maybe that's why they have gone back to the streets, colleges and universities all over the country.

How do we differentiate a gang bang from a threesome or foursome. When does it specifically become a gang bang?

It's a lot like pornography. You know it when you see it.

Gang Bangs as they apply here are not related to 'really good Friends', but, more like a group of people whose main objective is to try and silence those who disagree with them by using any means to shut them up, or make them afraid to post comments. Thus, they try to create their own echo chamber.

That is NOT what NT is, nor will it ever become such.

Just my own thoughts.

I understand. It was an attempt at coarse humor. I do have a question about this though. Is there a timeframe or something that I need to know about? For instance if I see a post that I feel like responding to, do I need to look at how many other replies in a certain amount of time it has so I don't gang bang?

As far as I know there is no limit to the number of responses that can be made to a comment. Gang Bangs are like a group of people piling on a person in a hostile or attacking manner. Adults should be able to converse and express their own opinions or POV that may oppose other people's comments in a civil and respectful manner. That does not normally happen in Gang Bangs, usually the total opposite.

Gang bangs happen in a short period of time and it's' when the comments are coming fast and furious. It is not when it happens over hours or days.

Though if everyone (or a vast majority) feels someone's comment is idiotic and they each comment on it, I don't see that as gang-banging.  Gang-banging it seems would be a more 'coordinated attack' on someone.  I never discuss any comments I'm going to make with any other NT user before making it......

i agree. But honestly, i'm not sure what a "gang-banging" looks like, either i've never experienced it or maybe i have and just won't be silenced ? i've had instances where many people have replied to my comment quickly and i just respond back to them... i guess i see things differently. Additionally, that was prevalent on NV-people would get 'thumbs down' due to their comment, then blame people for ganging up on them-Sometimes you just have to pull up those grown-up pants and understand that maybe a bunch of people think your comment(s) were less than worthy.  I recall some people crying the same way when we had the 'thumb down' option here.......

OK gang bangs are when there is one person getting slammed by a bunch of people in a very short period of time. Like I said, you know it when you see it, and I have on several occasions.

The emoticon thing is more personal. You might have not experienced it, but you got to remember that I am the person that gets the complaints, as do some of the other mods. It is unpleasant to say the least.

No way to respond to it all, once started, there is no way to stop it except by not participating.... and once you stop, they dance on your grave...

Indeed, dd. There will be those who will do all they can to try and create as much disruption as possible.

However, the choice is theirs to make. Whether they want to stay and engage in civil and respectful debates and discussion with other Members and observe the CoC, or be shown the door. While it is very rare here on NT, it can happen. No one threatened them to join NT, and no one is threatening them to stay here.

All NT Members, old and new, have the same choice. It is up to them to decide which they want to choose.

That was a favorite pastime for some over on another site.

What happened on 'the other site' is now history. Now that the Grace period for the newcomers has officially ended, those who like to engage in that kind of activity here on NT will now find it will not float here. NT is not any other site, it is, and has always been, NT. The rules apply to everyone, and those who violate them will have to answer for their own actions.

Most of the Members here on NT who have been here for a while are more than willing to help answer questions if they are something that does not need Admin attention.

I would suggest that anyone that has not yet read the Code of Conduct (CoC) or the Terms of Service (ToS) do so. They will need to learn how things are done here on NT, regardless of how things were/are done elsewhere.

My own opinion.

Hmmm, on the other hand, I see nothing stopping you from having a alter-ego so when you see a comment that isn't a CoH violation but still is one of those that just bug the H out of you, you could come on as "Perrie Halpern, A. R." and they'd never know it was you! You could give someone a piece of your mind and release some tension, even if it meant that you or one of the other mods would take it down a little sooner than most, you'd still know inside that for at least for a couple hours you let fly and people seen it.

Don't try it on me though, I'm sure I would know it was you even if you called yourself "PAULA Halpern, A.R."

You could even invent a niece, a part time mod who wants to learn about how to run a show like this, but because she is young and inexperienced, she could invent something like "the DUMBASS" awards, one for "Dumbass of the day," one for "Dumbass of the month," and of course, "dumbass of the Year," you REALLY got to work for that one. You could get "her" pictures of "dumbass" trophies, and when "she" saw a comment that was out of even the REALM of reality she could send one of them pictures. Wouldn't be her fault, she's new. angel

You and the rest of the mods seem to be doing a pretty job, keep it up. And I know that you probably don't want to post on the comment boards, it'd be like not leaving the job after work.

Ahhh....but she does. And often. When the Mods are not acting as Moderators they are just like any other Member here on NT. They can post comments in any article at any time as a Member, but, only in any other color than purple. That is a color reserved for Moderators to use when they are Moderating. So Moderators are not restricted from commenting as Members.

So just be aware that when you see Perrie or other Moderators posting in any other color than purple, they are commenting as a Member, not a Moderator.

You're very welcome, nightwalker. The Moderators here on NT are Members who volunteer to be Moderators. They are not allowed to express their personal views when Moderating, but, are fully allowed to do so when posting as Members. I know it can a be a bit confusing at first, but, now that you see the difference of when they are commenting as just Members and when they are commenting as Moderators it will be easier for you to tell the differnce. (smile)

I know about the gang banging from personal experiences on NV.  Not  a good thing!  However, I will be honest and say....I have almost enjoyed it happening on NT when the shoe was on the other foot.

My definition of gang banging.  When one has posted a comment contrary to the seeder's view.  The troops are called in and the seeder is  lambasted from here to hell or the contrary poster is lambasted from here to hell.   Additionally, there was an element on NV who reported to Dave directly their opinions that this person was colliding with the purpose of NV i.e., a totally liberal website.  They, also, reported their opinions to Dave about re-regs.  In my case, it was proven wrong, but did that stop them?  No!  They insisted I was a re-reg and nothing would stop them.

In my case, I was banned and it is the best thing that could have happened.  I found NT where the moderator and founder, Perrie Halpern, is fair and knows what the shit is coming down.  She doesn't compromise her moderating skills nor her purpose.

Thank you.

Tyler and Sally were moderators at the same time after Calvin left.  Then, Dave came in to replace Tyler, then Sally left not long after giving birth, then Dave left and then some amorphous moderator took over, then NV stopped moderating at all; then it died.  That was the timeline.  Don't ask me for specific dates.

Dave never fed anyone information. The info gathered came from comment history. Dave also brought you back after her banned you and gave you a second chance. That was blown and he banned again. He also did the banning well before he left. I never remember him making any comment about a "secret society".

I liked Dave and got along great with him. I think it is ironic that this article about the rules here is being used as a bash fest over a mod that had a thankless job. It is also funny that the ones complaining the most were banned. Some more than once.

Several people there whose opinions I greatly respect said the same thing about her. (Personally I never had any problems with her....or really with any moderator for that matter).I don't know if was political bias however-- I've heard complaints about her from people on both sides of the political spectrum. Rather, I think she just was not very good at moderating. I think she often just took a quick look at a comment and judged it to quickly without looking into the context, etc.I really liked Calvin. IMO he really tried to be fair.

A friend of mine use to have those huge laser disks.

It also had a remote control connected by a wire.

Her father also had a big collection of reel to reel music tapes. Nothing sounded better. Loved listening with headphones.

Just speculating but perhaps a PN to Pierre would be a better method of dealing with personal grievances.  It would help keep this thread from becoming a massive bitch session

On another note having read the COC and given the progressive nature of the suspension process I don't believe one comment is going to result in a permanent ban.  But give it a shot, who knows it might work.

We have had a few members here get some very long vacations and some banning. But let me tell you something that Calvin shared with me on FB

Bannings don't work. What you get is a meaner, nastier re-reg. On the other hand, because when you are suspended you know you will eventually be coming back, no nasty re-reg and a better behaving person.. sometimes forever, sometimes for a while. But it is effective.

One night Calvin wrote an article about a couple of scuba divers that were spearfishing and took an octopus. I said "I'll bet it tasted good" and he blew his top and called me an assho--.  I pointed out that it was he who was in violation of the COH and not myself. Then he banned me and went back and revised his post deleting his own COH violation to cover his tracks.

Then I had nothing to lose by coming back. I even figured out how to come back get banned and still continue to post under the same user for a week after they would ban me. I could create an account on one computer and leave the browser open and then move to a second computer and post my comments from the second one. When they banned the second computer I could go back to the first one as long as I didn't close the browser I could stay alive. They couldn't figure out why I was still able to post a week after they had banned me. I could be there to attend my own grave dancing parties.

Second, we don't ban people over comments. We remove them and cite them. Even NV didn't ban members over a singular comment.

Ok, since this is the place, we might have an issue.

Numerous times I have flagged a clear CoC violation only to see the flag reset and nothing done....

On a few items several times....

Finally, after over a dozen such times I post the violation, that way, it HAS to be seen.

For me, just flagging only is equivalent to no moderation at all.

Perrie you are not on 24/7, and because of that, it just plain doesn't work consistently....

Raven Wing

That is why NT needs more Moderators who are willing actually do the job. No one of them can be on NT at all times, so they need to be sure to have full coverage, as this site does not shut down and there are many Members here who live in areas that have various time zones.

Instead of people complaining about the lack of sufficient Moderation, they should first find out what the job requires and volunteer to help out. I moderate for two company forums as well as my own private Beta testing forum, and I know what is involved in all areas she has to deal with here on NT.

Perrie has a real time life, as well as time needed to run and take care of the site, working long hours with the people behind the scenes to maintain and improve the quality of the site. So she can't be here to Moderate 24/7.

There are other Moderators, however, some of them I rarely see here other than to comment. And with the addition of the number of new Members there is a need for more Moderators to help cover when she can't be Moderating. She does the best she can as much as she can, and, complaining is not helping.

Just my own opinion.

Glad that you found it funny. And maybe I don

t know the background you speak of, but, I do know how much it takes to do what Perrie does here on NT as I live with much the kind of responsibilities she has here on NT. So I don't really care for people complaining that someone is not doing enough when they are doing and trying to do so much and still have time for a real life with family and friends. There are only so many hours in a day, and one person can only do so much in that time frame.

If I have offended you in any way I apologize.

Well I'll tell ya what, I wasn't complaining, I'm well aware of the need for moderators that are actually willing to do the job. cause she is swamped.

But that is ok, I just won't bother reporting anymore cause from my end, the bias is overwhelming.

when someone can commit a direct boldfaced CoC violation an old timer who knew it was a violation. and that violation gets reported to a moderator that is online at the time, and the moderator (a long time member moderator) after a few minutes goes offline, (just long enough to review the violation)

I would say that is a prime case of biased moderation, some of the moderators will not moderate, or will only based upon who is doing the violation.

It's happened too many times for it to be an occasional "Mistake" type thing......

Perrie knows this I have already brought it to her attention.

As far as being a mod? I was one, and she has my standing offer to be one again.

As far as my knowledge of the job? I was a mod at Ars Technica for many years.

knowledge of the job she is doing? I've been a part of seven different sites from setup through shutdown, five of them done all by myself. I still have the server software (wildcat web server) if I wish to spend the money to start another....

She has knowledgeable people that are willing to help....

Am I complaining? no not really....

This is a "meta" article isn't it?

She is the site owner, it will be whatever way she wishes it to be......

Given the experience I have, she has made that perfectly clear.

Sort of like the mainstream media in this country, biased?  When everything seems biased to you, you might want to consider the possibility that you're a teeny bit biased yourself.

I find digging up the yard and garden with a mattock to be a good venting outlet.

I don't have the physical ability to do that much digging these days, so this year I limited my time online and still wound up painting the interior of my home.

But it doesnt matter who it was directed at. It was directed at a particular member. ONE person. The comment says so.

No attack can be made on a particular person.

In addition, you have deleted comments that you considered to be an attack on a group of members. If I said "most of the conservatives on NT are unhinged and irrational" you would delete it and most likely give me a violation. You have done similar before.

Perrie, do you actually think that whatever was in that long threat of censored comments would somehow negatively impact this site?  Give me a fucking break.  The world will still turn, the sun will still rise, nobody is going to leave your precious site someone didn't stay exactly on topic.  You are ruining this site with the absurd amount of moderation, and you've told me personally how much you hate the job.  So why do you keep it up?  That level of stubbornness is certainly not indicative of an independent.

He said to the founder and owner of "this site". Sorry but I just have to laugh. There are a few "members" here that just don't get the fact that it will not evolve into an echo chamber. Pretty sad really but I for one think that is the attraction to the place. Moderation and for the most part, civil posters.

I have an idea everyone!! Let's start a "Go-Fund-Me" page for the malcontents and they can travel off into cyber land and develop and maintain "a land of their own".

No need for that....the door to NT is not one-way, and there is no fee charged in either direction. They are as free to leave as they were to enter. If they think that if they hang around long enough and try hard enough they can make NT into NV, they will find out soon enough that they will never win. Not only will Perrie never let that happen here, but, the majority of the NT Members not allow it either. So they will soon find their bubble has burst.

And clearly you seem to forget what NT is about, all Members here are allowed and have the right to comment on the comments of others. And YOU do not  have the right to tell anyone else what they can and can't comment on. And NWM's comments no more deserve to be deleted than your own.

NT is NOT all about one individual, no matter how much they like to think so.

Then perhaps you should send them in a private note instead of on a public forum of a site that Perrie says belongs to the members (who have a right to speak to anything posted).

Hal,

I removed those comments because when there is a rule I follow them. I made a promise a long time ago, never to have smack talked about NV members and I am holding to my word. Not for any other reason. The moderation on this site didn't change. Everyone had a change in attitude after the election that I am stuck dealing with. You didn't complain before, since it was the conservatives making the violations over Obama. You just feel the pinch more now that the shoe is on the other foot.

As for stubbornness, I am anything but stubborn. This site has gone through many changes over the years with moderation... the impasse rules, the RBR's etc. I am willing to give anything a try. But the one thing that I have learned from years of moderation, is that if I give an inch the members will take a mile. That is human nature. Independents are not called independent, not because they are wishy washy. I know that is the rumor about us. We are called independent because we decide things based on logic and independent of other issues.

AJP....I understand your frustration with getting to know how things work here on NT. All the newcomers are trying to get used to it as well. And so did I when I first came to NT from NV some time ago.

But, ideas are not what is being Moderated here, it is more the way some Members choose to relay those ideas in their comments. I am not a Moderator, so I don't know all the nitty-gritty on the details of how they determine what is a violation or other reason for Moderating a comment by a Member, although, some are very obvious. Much of the Moderation regards how Members respond to other Members. The Code of Conduct is a product of the Members of this site, not Perrie alone. Members make the Code of Conduct rules and the Moderators enforce those rules.

If you find something that you don't think is right, you should flag it and let the Moderators deal with it. And if you have any questions about the CoC you are always welcome to ask Perrie or another Moderator to explain it to you so that you will have a better understanding of how Moderation works here on NT.

I hope that things will become more clear for you as you become more familiar with the site. (smile)

Then PM the moderator, son.  If you post in an open forum, you get responses.  You know better than telling others they can't respond.  Amazing the lengths some people will go to to have an echo chamber.

HELP! After signing out yesterday I continued to browse and came across an article you wrote about the the decline of civil conversations. When I came on this morning I intended to make a reply there to a gentleman who I believe is named Steve Ott? I didn't write it down but if it helps you made a response stating as how you like to listen to what this man has to say. I clicked on this article this morning and have scrolled through it numerous times without finding that particular part of the dialogue.  I guess there must be more than one conversation on that article. Can you direct me to the one I want?

Please respond here, the one comment I made yesterday generated dozens of notifications in my G-Mail inbox. I will be changing my e-mail address after a couple of days unless I can find a way to make G-Mail act like a mailbox instead of a town crier.

You will have to set your Private Messages to get only the messages you want.  Go to your name in the upper right hand corner and click it.  Then click Settings, then Private Messages.  Set it to receive what you want.  D.

It's a glitch that seems to occur on articles that have a lot of comments - later comments show up in our private notes, but you can't navigate to them in the body of the discussion itself.  I believe this is in consequence to NT articles getting more traffic/comments than they have up to this point.

I have the same issue on some large articles. When I want to respond to a comment found in my in-box it will often time out before the search finds the comment, which means if I want to respond I have to scroll through all the comments to find the one I want. It usually happens when when there are more than 400 comments to the same article.  When that happens, I will then only take the time to scroll through all the comments if there is someone who has responded to one of my own comments to answer. But, it makes it hard to keep up with the overall article when the search continually fails. I get the notifications of the comments made, but, so I can see what has been said, but, the search times out before it is found if I want to respond. Kinda annoying. However, it only happens on large articles with more than 400 comments, so it is not that often that it happens.

That too, as sometimes the comment will show up in my notifications but, when I click on the link it does not show up in the article, it will be some completely different comment that shows up. But, again, this only happens on very large articles.

I am glad to see there is active moderation here. I admit I can be abrasive at times, but I never try to "attack" anyone. I was on NV since March of 2009, just before Sally joined and to this day still have Tyler as a friend on FB, (though he does post much these days). I was banned on NV for one reason...."people", some of which are now NT members, were able to get enough "votes" to "report" me.  I asked Dave about this, and he told me, "If enough people report your post, right or wrong, I have to take action". So, towards the end, all it took was enough, "reports" to get someone suspended or banned, the content of the post(s) was irrelevant. That was disturbing to me because there were several of these people that had multiple accounts, just so they could, "report" someone they didn't like, multiple times. Here? Looks like that is a non-issue since there is ACTIVE moderation.....VERY cool. The "gang bang" issue was a big deal on NV as well, and yes, Butter, like many people, were victim of it, it's nice to see that there is a rule about that here. But I do have a question?

.

What is the rule on off topic discussion? Or? Discussion derails? Just curious.

.

Excellent article and good information, thanks very much.

This site has some of the best moderation of any site I've been on! (And I was on Internet discussion sites for many, many years before I joined NV back in 2007)

One unique feature here-- the site owner Perrie ("Resident Advisor") is easier to get in touch with  (& receive a speedy reply) than another other site I've been on (well, any site that had more than 5 or 6 members).

Happy to have you with us, and glad that you like the Moderation. Few people like being treated like a soccer ball in a heated rivalry game when all they want to do is voice their own POV, belief and/or opinion. Respect and civility is #1 here on NT, and is how the majority of the Members here conduct themselves. (smile)
