I had Papa Johns when it first came to the college town where I lived in 1991. It sucked and I never went back. Pizza is relatively easy to make at home.

The racist incident that spurred this was brought to light by Forbes, which reported on a May PR training session involving Schnatter. According to Forbes , Schnatter tried to downplay his past controversies by saying that  Colonel Sanders — the founder of KFC — called black people the N-word.

In a PR training session, how stupid can he get...

I like how our Racist-in-Chief expressed his inner xenophobe in his interview with the UK Sun in this segment regarding immigration:

"I think it's changing the culture, it's a very negative thing for Europe. I know it's politically not necessarily correct to say that, but I'll say it and I'll say it loud," he said. "I do not think it's good for Europe, and I don't think it's good for our country."

My initial reaction to these stories is usually the same. It's always amazing to me that there are people - especially if they are successful people - who even have this word available to them in their vocabulary bucket. It's a word I literally never use. I could be angry, drunk, drugged up, whatever, and it would never occur to me to use this word. The only people I have ever associated with who used it were black (a practice I disagree with, but I get it and have never attacked anyone for it). Why a white person - particularly a leader of a huge corporation - would say this word (even accidentally) just blows my mind.

Having said all that, there does seem to be something about this particular story that appears to be an overreaction given the context. It appears he was quoting/paraphrasing someone else (Colonel Sanders). He himself wasn't trying to use the word on or about anyone, and the whole discussion was supposed to be anti-racist. Although even in this context, I personally would say "n-word" instead of the word itself.

Perhaps if he hadn't already gotten himself in trouble over his NFL comments, people wouldn't have been as sensitive. Still, the idea that you can quote someone and be treated as if they were your words seems to reflect the trend in our society where people rush to be offended rather than dispassionately analyze what is actually being said.

did you not notice that you are the only one that has even suggested this can be mitigated away. by the way, the fact that HE DID get himself in trouble for his NFL comments would suggest that THIS SITUATION is confirmation that he is lacking in the ability to have anyone suggest a defense or level of sensitivity is the problem.

he is the problem and he has public twice did something that NORMAL PEOPLE dont need to do because they know it is wrong to do and say.

Yeah, I don't let other people do my critical thinking for me. I'm not part of the mob. I don't measure the truth of something by how many people on an Internet forum agree with me.

the fact that HE DID get himself in trouble for his NFL comments would suggest that THIS SITUATION is confirmation that he is lacking in the ability to have anyone suggest a defense or level of sensitivity is the problem

I think that's probably true. I said as much in my earlier comment. It seems like you missed that point.

Why make excuses...

Do you think referencing/quoting someone who used the n-word simply to say "he said n-" is the same as using it yourself to refer to someone? As I said, I personally wouldn't do either one, but the first use is obviously less offensive than the latter.

did you not notice that you are the only one that has even suggested this can be mitigated away

again, you want to act as if you dont know WHAT you typed. thus the MITIGATION was referring to you and the need to make excuses for this mans conduct.

Yeah, I don't let other people do my critical thinking for me. I'm not part of the mob. I don't measure the truth of something by how many people on an Internet forum agree with me.

a critical thinker doesn't get on the INTERNET and suggest that a business leader has any room what so ever to use a racial slur on a conference call , especially with people he doesn't know. so you are wont be mistaken for being a critical thinker.

the fact that HE DID get himself in trouble for his NFL comments would suggest that THIS SITUATION is confirmation that he is lacking in the ability to have anyone suggest a defense or level of sensitivity is the problem

I think that's probably true. I said as much in my earlier comment. It seems like you missed that point.

you know what i have known as most adults do. That when a person says " i said as much in my earlier comment" means they didn't.  just say it the way it has to be said. which is directly.

Why make excuses...

Do you think referencing/quoting someone who used the n-word simply to say "he said n-" is the same as using it yourself to refer to someone?

YES- as a matter of fact i find that if you have to say it because someone else did that makes you no better. Most normal people who know that word was used dont repeat they just say that the person who did "used a bad word".

As I said, I personally wouldn't do either one, but the first use is obviously less offensive than the latter.

WRONG again, again your need to think that way makes it clear why you comment or reply the way you do. And that is really to bad if you cant see that.

I went on to say:

Schnatter is the younger up and coming breed of the 'conservative oligarchy.'  He is a regular attendee of Koch sponsored events designed to remake American government and American society.

As far as the ****** word, it has been used in the common American vernacular for centuries.  Ever see "Django Unchained?"  Is the word offensive?  Of course.  It was and is meant to be offensive.

sadly another attempt at making an excuse for someone who benefits from the public based on his business that is available as a choice to the consumer.

some of us consumers believe that a person who runs such a company should not be engaged in an activity that has to do with comments that in the context effects one populous of this country. Much less have to speak in such a way that others KNOW  is offensive in that type of public presentation.

As far as your movie reference, the time period and scope of the movie is made clear to those who choose to see that style of movie. The fact that it was not toned down is expected because that is exactly how life was back then. The deflection you presented would have some validity if it was found out that the producer or individual out side of this movie project used those words.

Again, most see this mans need to use that term in a meeting with others who know the context he used it in was unprofessional , unwarranted and ignorant.

And when you are that high up in image based on society's expectations , and choose to say such things, then you dont get to keep that benefit.

Given their odious history on issues like this, it's a sign of social progress that the board of Papa Johns wanted nothing more to do with Schnatter.    This isn't exactly the first time he's let his inner bigot out.

well sadly thats exactly right, this type of person along with the others in news lately just get to comfortable and forget that everyone is not in AAAH of them.

And the down fall of some of these folks in the news lately have this commonality of assuming that there statute is supposed to transcend to anyone around them.

I don't want to blame ALL of this racist crap on Trump but it seems that some right wingers are now so comfortable expressing their inner bigot that we've returned to the era of kicking folks out of swimming pools because they have too much melanin and might contaminate the water.    Did you see the latest one?

Trump has accomplished what physicists have not, the ability to time travel back to the good old days of the Jim Crow south.

I would venture to say that every left-winger on this site has used the "n" word multiple times in their casual and social conversations. I think what we are witnessing here is liberal and mostly white guilt.

I would venture to say that you use the word all the time.  I never do.

As a boy in the early 1960s I oft heard some say that since their parents and grandparents had all called black folks the n-word and since mama and papa and granny and pawpaw were all good righteous Christians then the n-word must be just fine and dandy to use and there was no good reason why they should not address anyone that way if they wanted to. Go Figure...

Mama once had a second grader who would not stop calling other children the n-word at recess so she was constantly being told, "Johnny called me the n-word", less my editing. Which was worse, the use of the word of being told? In any case she had all the kids in class start calling Johnny "Cracker John" until he ceased using that word. He stopped. She probably couldn't do that today.

I like Pizza Boli's.  I don't know if they're a regional or national chain though.

Let me make it perfectly clear for everyone, if you are a white male or female, just don't say nigger. Really in any context, academic is slightly different, but in general conversation or interaction, just don't say it. Piss and moan about fairness all you want, I am just saying if you are white and you say nigger you will be considered to be a racist.

The way you just used the word is not radically different from the way Papa John used it.
