Fact Check This: Quality Of Life Is Up Sharply Under Trump
Unemployment at historic lows? Wages climbing at a fast pace? Who knew? The news media, fixated on Trump scandals, hasn't exactly been broadcasting that good news. And media fact checkers busied themselves after the speech nitpicking Trump's economic boasts.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Good Times: When Trump rattled off a series of economic successes in his State of the Union, he could have added one more. The public's quality of life has improved sharply in the past two years.

"We have created 5.3 million new jobs and, importantly, added 600,000 new manufacturing jobs," Trump said at one point in this address. "Wages are rising at the fastest pace in decades ... . Unemployment has reached the lowest rate in half a century. African-American, Hispanic-American and Asian-American unemployment have all reached their lowest levels ever recorded. Unemployment for Americans with disabilities has also reached an all-time low."

Unemployment at historic lows? Wages climbing at a fast pace? Who knew? The news media, fixated on Trump scandals, hasn't exactly been broadcasting that good news. And media fact checkers busied themselves after the speech nitpicking Trump's economic boasts.

But the upbeat assessment clearly resonated with the public, most of whom gave Trump's speech top marks. Turns out they have been firsthand witnesses to the strength of the economy over the past two years.

How do we know? Look at the IBD/TIPP Quality of Life Index, which asks the public whether they think their quality of life will be better, worse or the same over the next six months.

In the 17 years IBD has been compiling this index, it's averaged 56.2. Under President Obama, it averaged just 53.7. Even if you only include Obama's second term, it was well below the 17-year average.

Under Trump? The Quality of Life Index has averaged 59.3. That's a 10% increase over the average during the Obama years.

To be sure, there's a partisan element to this. Republicans tend to rate their quality of life higher than Democrats when there's a Republican in the White House, and vice versa. But look at independents: Their quality of life averaged 52 under Obama. It's averaging 58.8 under Trump — a 13% bump.

What' more, the gains are across the board. Households making from $35,000 to $50,000, for example, saw an 8% gain in this index when you compare Trump to Obama. Those making from $50,000 to $75,000, an 11% gain.

We see the same phenomenon with the IBD/TIPP Economic Optimism Index, which has been in positive territory — over 50 — since Trump's been president. It averaged only 46.8 under Obama.

The public is clearly giving Trump credit for the turnaround. While his overall approval ratings hover around 40%, he regularly gets much higher marks for his handling of the economy in the IBD/TIPP poll.

Our guess is that if the press were to let up even a little on the 24/7 criticism of Trump, and spend some time reporting on what's happening in the economy, Trump would get higher ratings on both measures.

And from the same source, only two days earlier:

Unlike other measures, the Quality of Life Index has been relatively steady over the past 17 years.

Seems the writer of the IBD article failed to read the IBD article from two days previous.

From Pew Research:

For most U.S. workers, real wages have barely budged in decades

Purchasing power is basically where it was in 1964 for the average household. And now that Trump's tax cut is showing it's true face as a tax increase, life won't get any better soon.

Trumps tax cuts only raise federal income taxes on people who have a mortgage that exceeds $750,000 and can no longer deduct interest paid on amounts higher than that and those who used to deduct more than the new nation wide $10,000 cap on deductions from state and local taxes.  The only people paying more taxes than before are wealthy people in high real estate value mostly blue areas and high state and local tax blue states and cities.  The rest of us are no longer subsidizing the high mortgage and high tax rates of much of blue state America.  I love it that over half of the homes in our Bay Area are now subject to tax increases due to the limit on mortgage interest deductions.  This means that they will pay more in taxes on a 1500 sq ft 3 BR 2 bath 2car garage tiny yard tract house than we will on a 4,000 sq ft. 5 bedroom 4 bath home with a three car garage and a pool and 1/2 an acre.

UNREIMBURSED EMPLOYEE EXPENSES

Anyone that drives their car or has to provide their own safety equipment, clothing, maint. of the clothing, tools not provided by the employer, hotels and meals not provided by the employer....can no longer deduct these expenses.

How conveniently you left that out...

Driving my car alone was 90,000 miles a year was a deduction of $30,000 off my income. Cleaning my suits, another $2000 off, hotels and meals another $3000.

That's $35,000 income adjustment loss no matter where you live.

Just more right wing propaganda being pushed by the usual liars and propagandists.

My guess is that some in the media feel an obligation to report on a pathological liar.

Here's a tip for you HA, Trump will never be "let up on". Nor is there the slightest reason why he should be "let up on".

If he had a shred of decency he would resign tomorrow morning and stop embarrassing the hell out of this country every day.

Well, they are expending money on highways like drunken sailors whether it's on 35, 820, 287, 45 or the new ( awesome, but expensive)  express lanes throughout Dallas Fort Worth.

TXDOT is  taking flying bridges and ramps to new levels.

But as a state?  The regular surface roads are miserable, and as a long term PA resident, I know miserable.

Texas?  South Carolina's maintenance of sand roads is better than the average residential street/road in Texas.

I have lived in over 9 states and Texas is the least impressive, especially for a state that lacks any appreciable snowfall or tectonic activity.

No wonder that there are more than 4 million pickup trucks in TX already and that number keeps growing.

(We don't want to be second to CA in anything, lol)

Keep your head buried in the sand and/or up trump's butt:

Best description of the moron in the White House yet, and from a Brit!

“Stolen from a friend. The best description of Trump I have ever read, from a Brit.

Someone on Quora asked "Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?" Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote this magnificent response.

A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.

For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace - all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.

So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing - not once, ever.

I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility - for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is - his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults - he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.

Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.

And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.

Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.

He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.

He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.

That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff - the Queensberry rules of basic decency - and he breaks them all. He punches downwards - which a gentleman should, would, could never do - and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless - and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority - perhaps a third - of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think 'Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
* Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
* You don't need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.

After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.

God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.

In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws - he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:

'My God… what… have… I… created?

If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set."

Yep.  He has America’s inflation rate down low. Interest rates?  Check he’s got those way down still too.  Unemployment?  He’s got America’s unemployment rate at historically low levels as well as the rates for the least educated, and for all minority groups.  Trump has brought somethings in America down low.
