And federal charges will likely be coming.

CHICAGO (WLS)   — A Cook County grand jury has returned a 16-count indictment against “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, according to court records.

The Cook county State’s Attorney’s Office confirmed the indictment, which they said was returned by a grand jury on Thursday.

Smollett was originally charged with one felony count of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office on Feb. 20.

Now the grand jury has returned 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct for filing a false police report.

The TV actor claimed he was the victim of a vicious hate crime in the Streeterville neighborhood on Jan. 29. He said two men physically attacked him while yelling racist and homophobic slurs, threw a chemical liquid on him and looped a rope around his neck.

Just imagine what would've happened if a couple of poor saps who matched the hoax descriptions had been in the area. I bet Smollett would've left them out to dry.

Hell yeah, he would have. Jussie previously gave false information to police when he was busted for drunk more than a decade ago. Smollett, who was 25 at the time of his earlier arrest, was slapped with charges of false impersonation after giving police his 18-year-old brother Jake’s name to authorities during the DUI stop in Los Angeles. Smollett even reportedly signed his younger brother’s name on the promise that he would appear in court.

He was willing to let his little brother swing for his screw up, obviously, he would have let a couple of strangers go to prison to cover up his false racial attack story.

That's why he needs to go away for a few decades. His hate crimes earned him a lifetime in prison.

I hope they do not throw the book at him, a hard bonk on the noggin would be more appropriate (two or three bonks).

Past the time to make an example of what the result of bad behavior should be, it will be interesting to see how this shakes out.
