Poynter forced to scrap 'unreliable news' list targeting conservative outlets after outcry
“On Tuesday, April 30, Poynter posted a list of 515 'unreliable' news websites, built from pre-existing databases compiled by journalists, fact-checkers and researchers around the country. Our aim was to provide a useful tool for readers to gauge the legitimacy of the information they were consuming,” the statement read. “Soon after we published, we received complaints from those on the list and readers who objected to the inclusion of certain sites, and the exclusion of others. The Poynter Institute, a journalism nonprofit organization, has had to scrap a list it created of "unreliable" news sources due to complaints about the outlets included.

A journalism watchdog has been forced to scrap a list of “unreliable” news sources because, as it turns out, the list wasn’t reliable.

The Poynter Institute, a journalismnonprofit organization, initially released a list of more than 500 “unreliable” news outlets purportedly “built from pre-existing databases compiled by journalists, fact-checkers and researchers around the country.”

But a number of prominent conservative-leaning outlets were included in the “unreliable” category, including The Washington Examiner, Washington Free Beacon, Daily Caller and other publications that employ scores of journalists covering Congress, elections, the White House and more. The index was created with the help of an employee for the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The walk-back was gradual. First, the authors reversed the inclusion of The Washington Examiner after further review. But the paper's executive editor, Philip Klein, complained that the group was still urging an advertiser blacklist for those outlets still included -- calling the process behind the list opaque and arbitrary.

Poynter’s managing editor, Barbara Allen, posted a mea culpa Thursday as the backlash built.

We began an audit to test the accuracy and veracity of the list, and while we feel that many of the sites did have a track record of publishing unreliable information, our review found weaknesses in the methodology.

“We detected inconsistencies between the findings of the original databases that were the sources for the list and our own rendering of the final report.”

It continued: “Therefore, we are removing this unreliable sites list until we are able to provide our audience a more consistent and rigorous set of criteria. The list was intended to be a starting place for readers and journalists to learn more about the veracity of websites that purported to offer news; it was not intended to be definitive or all encompassing.

“We regret that we failed to ensure that the data was rigorous before publication, and apologize for the confusion and agitation caused by its publication. We pledge to continue to hold ourselves to the highest standards.”

The institute continued to face fallout for the blunder, with many noting the irony of how the "unreliable" news outlets list was itself not reliable.

The databases curated to create the list included ones maintained by Annenberg Public Policy Center, Snopes, PolitiFact, and Merrimack University, researcher Barrett Golding wrote in a now-deleted report explaining the botched index.

Golding is also a producer with the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Now if only like Poynter and the SPLC we can find some effort to take down and rhetorically by fact destroy limb by limb the evil MBFC and the morally bankrupt censors and liars that operate it as well.

Patience. Slowly, but surely, each of these sites (and others that you listed in comment 2  ) are being exposed to show what they really are - biased, bigoted, hypocritical left wing sites pushing fake news.

They and everyone guided by their biases that applies to.  Fortunately we have a national government courts system, executive branch and it’s agencies and congress that hires people from these msm targets to govern our lives, to write our regulations, be our judges and congressional staff, testify before Congress, argue before the courts, give exclusive interviews and news releases to the forbidden sites, find non 🚫 sites to air the opinions of the leaders of our groups and record their activities in government in the news. The more Poynter, SPLC, MBFC, snopes, politifact, Facebook, google, twitter try to censor us the more government and other alternative media create workarounds so that the targeted groups are more in the news and get more coverage and exposure than before bigots above tried to silence us.  The msm and it’s allies can not contain the alternative media when it’s the msm that is engaged in fake news.  The war is on and as crowds chant at Trump rallies, CNN Sucks!

“Marketers can create blacklists,” Poynter helpfully points out, but since your blacklist might not be as comprehensive as our blacklist here’s a handy blacklist that will allow you to blacklist those we believe should be blacklisted.

Poynter’s list includes… Breitbart News, the Media Research Center, Pajamas Media, Washington Examiner, The Daily Wire, The Blaze, Red State, Project Veritas, Newsmax, Zero Hedge, LifeSite, Judicial Watch, Frontpage, The Washington Free Beacon, The Daily Caller, and the Drudge Report…

But nowhere on this list will you find the establishment media outlets — CNN, NBC, the Washington Post, Politico, the New York Times, MSNBC, etc. —  responsible for blowing the biggest stories of the last five years:

  • The Trayvon Martin Hoax
  • The Hands Up, Don’t Shoot Hoax
  • Donald Trump Can’t Win
  • The Russia Collusion Hoax
  • The Brett Kavanaugh Serial Rapist Hoax
  • The Covington High School Boys Hoax

Poynter’s blacklist was only about one thing, had only one goal — one — and that was to tell advertisers to starve alternative media, alternative thought and ideas to death.

But here’s the real news, Poynter is not retracting its McCarthyite blacklist in shame — oh no… Poynter is promising to return with a better and bolder [blacklist. Deleted]
