Common health beliefs not necessarily true
There’s new findings as to whether chicken is really better for lowering cholesterol than red meat, and there’s also news about those 10,000 steps you’re trying to get in every day.

Dear Friend Perrie: The Fed Reserve promised in order to keep the national steps growing not to raise the number of stairs.

Laisse Faire is part of the Me Too # movement in Economics.

I think the issue isn't Communist (Red) Meat vs. UPS (Upstate Poultry Seared).

To me, its all a matter of Astrology.

I must confess Enoch, I did the most daring of things yesterday morning.

I stopped and had a breakfast that might make Jay's look like a 5 star restaurant.

Yes, I stopped at McDonald's and got a breakfast sandwich, hash browns and orange juice...still waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Hold the bacon* for me and add another beer on the side.

(* Short story: Older sis rented a room from me for a few years. Part of the deal for low rent was providing meals. I can't say everything, but I will say next to everything included bacon. I still cringe.)

If you're a red meat lover change to wild game (venison) or buffalo.

Dear Brother Kavika: There are some great locally raised venison, buffalo, llama, ostrich goat and sheep meat animals here in upstate, NY.

Also, try the chicken It tastes just like chicken (except at Jay's Diner).

Dear Friend Trout Giggles: On the best of days the chicken at Jay's wishes it tasted as good as road kill!

Last week ants in Jay's kitchen looked at scraps and hung themselves in protest.

Sous Chef Recycle immediately made a batch of Antdes Stew.

We do the best we have.

If you're a red meat lover change to wild game (venison) or buffalo.

Part of the problem with the red meat most Americans eat (commercially raised beef) is due not so much to the fat content as it is to the fact that they are raised on Corn, Soy, etc. This helps fatten them up (and if you eat that meat it will help fatten you up as well!).

OTOH, cattle raised naturally-- i.e. foraging on grass, is much much healthier.

(But unfortunately "Grass Fed Beef" is much more expensive).

The healthier alternative if you eat Beef is to eat only "Grass Fed Beef"-- or better yet Bison etc that Kavika suggested.

IIRC< Grass Fed Beef probably contains significant levels of Omega-3s. (That's the "healthy fat" that is found in Salmon, Sardines, etc).

(Its also much healthier topurchase eggs that are "Omega 3 Eggs".

Or wait a couple of years for the next study which could report that the amino acids in fatty red meat like you get from cows is better for you than what you can get from leaner red meats like buffalo.  It all changes around to keep the new fad running.

I would rather just enjoy in moderation like my grandparents and great grandparents did then worry about what is bad for me today vs yesterday.

That's actually true...

Apparently Salt really does raise blood pressure a lot in some people and should be avoided or minimized. But interestingly, in many other folks it really doesn't blood pressure much if at all.

Its not "salt" per se, but rather the Sodium. (Ordinary table salt is NaCl-- Sodium Chloride). However, there are salt substitutes that have no Sodium-- they contain KCL ( Potassium Chloride) instead. Here's one such product- - there are several brands like this.

Amount Per Serving

% Daily Value*
Potassium  690mg 20%
Protein  0g
Sodium  0mg 0%
Total Carb.  0g 0%
Total Fat  0g 0%
* Percentage of Daily Values are based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

The operative term being "some people". A small minority, who do not evacuate excess salt efficiently. The vast majority doesn't have this problem, so the vast majority can consume as much salt as they please.

I have a flaky heart, but low blood pressure, so popcorn, pork chops, fried chicken... all heavily salted... yum

I've been interested in studying nutrition for many years. And one thing that always struck me as a bit strange is that most sources tend to talk in generalizations. As if everyone had the same optimal nutritional protocol. I've always thought that while there were some general principles, people vary greatly.

Recently I have noticed what I thinki is a very positive trend-- more and more of the articles currently being published are starting to acknowledge that fact.

If you are going to eat chicken, make sure to eat the caged chickens....their lives suck and shedding their moral coil is a blessing. Free range chickens are free and happy, something to live for.
