Trump judicial nominee withdraws amid GOP opposition

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

Michael Bogren, a Trump judicial nominee, is withdrawing from consideration amid a Republican backlash, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Bogren, who was nominated to the District Court for the Western District of Michigan, faced   growing opposition   from Republican senators. Three Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee — Josh Hawley of Missouri, Ted Cruz of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina — said they would oppose his nomination and more were expected to emerge. He also faced criticism from conservative advocacy groups like the Judicial Crisis Network, Heritage Action for America, and Conservative Action Project.

Bogren’s withdrawal is a rare and embarrassing setback for the White House, which has had little trouble getting the GOP-controlled Senate to confirm President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees.

Bogren and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

At issue was a brief Bogren signed off on while defending the city of East Lansing against a Catholic couple that opposed same-sex marriage. The couple was barred from East Lansing's farmers market after they refused to a host a same-sex marriage on their farm citing religious beliefs. In response, the couple sued.

East Lansing’s brief defending its position used analogies involving the Knights of the White Camelia, KKK and imams who do not believe women should drive. Those analogies offended Senate Republicans — particularly Hawley, who grilled Bogren on his views at a Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing.

Unlike many Trump judicial nominees, Bogren did have the backing of his home-state senators. Democratic Sens. Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters supported his nomination.

Bogren is a managing partner at Plunkett Cooney.

Un fucking believable.

In the republican quest to fill every court with partisan nutjobs, this man was rejected because he wasn't bigoted enough.

Only in liberaltopia is this acceptable in an argument against religious freedom of a private business- that is not even located in East Lansing; but Charlotte, MI.

East Lansing’s brief defending its position used analogies involving the Knights of the White Camelia, KKK and imams who do not believe women should drive.

Please look up Michigan Law, the couple refusing to host same sex marriages on their farm is protected.

It is not even about that. This is about them rejecting this nominee because he was on this case and defended the farmers market.

He went against their narrative while he was doing his job.

There is a huge difference between "the individual withdrawing his name" and "the individual was rejected".

THEY did not "reject" - they had "growing" (all three of them) opposition over his nomination.

He withdrew after he knew he would not be confirmed.

In case anyone is interested in the case they are upset over here is a link.

John Corvino, a philosophy professor at Wayne State University, said the case is “complex and peculiar” because Tennes was booted based largely on discriminatory practices occurring well outside the city of East Lansing. The ban on gay weddings at Tennes’ Charlotte orchard, however, is “perfectly legal in Michigan,” Corvino explained.

Again you are trying to change the narrative of the seed.

Besides, if they can legally discriminate on their farm, why cannot the farmers market have the same privilege?

So they can discriminate but how dare someone do the same to them.

They can find another market.

If you can't tell the difference between a private business; and something that is run by City of East Lansing elected officials- then there is no point in discussing anything.

He got caught on the wrong side of an argument; and tried comparing what the Catholic couple was legally doing under Michigan law comparing them to the KKK, and imams. He made a bad choice and now it came back to bite him in the ass.

They can find another market.

Or the City of East Lansing can find elected officials who aren't prejudiced assholes; and follow Michigan Law, which overrides local laws.

The prejudice assholes were the ones discriminating.

He was doing his job which he is paid to do and now being condemned for it.

From what I gather, the case is also not over yet.

How so? It seems you cannot comprehend that some Senators rejected him and would not vote for him.

100 Senators - 3, I repeat, THREE voiced their opposition - kinda gives you 97 - 3 - looks like a winning streak to me.  His home Senators were/are in support of him.

Amazing to me is how the city of East Lansing could use all the discriminatory reasons in the world and those THREE Senators/S

Hawly - Hawley stated that human trafficking is the result of women's sexual revolution in the 1960s, due to the social encouragement of premarital sex and the use of contraception . After receiving criticism for these statements, Hawley reiterated that Hollywood culture was a major cause of human trafficking - Wiki.

Oh yeah - I'd definitely believe what he says.

Tillis - In 2012, then-Speaker Tillis supported a constitutional amendment to define marriage as occurring between one man and one woman. This measure ultimately passed.  Following the 2014 U.S. Supreme Court  decision legalizing same sex marriage , Tillis announced that he would oppose the ruling in his role as Speaker. This stance was relatively unique among major elected North Carolina Republican officials at the time, as even then-Governor Pat McCrory accepted the ruling.

In 2015, shortly after his inauguration to the Senate, Tillis voted in favor of an amendment to a non-binding resolution that would allow same-sex married couples living in states that don't recognize same-sex marriage to access to government resources.  The possible contradiction between this vote and his earlier stances have led some to criticize Tillis as being both "for and against" same sex marriage. - Wiki

Lemme see - don't like the LGBT community/luv the LGBT community just as long as men only marry women.

Cruz????  Cruz opposes both  same-sex marriage  and  civil unions .  He believes that marriage should be legally defined as only "between one man and one woman". Cruz referred to the  Supreme Court's decision  legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide as "among the darkest hours of our nation" and accused the court of  judicial activism .  Wiki

And Cruz is Tillis' partner???

Oh hell yeah - three of the most upstanding reps for the LBGT community and people take their word???

Somebody might want to follow the money on this one.

There are 47 Democrat Senators, 2 Independents that almost always vote with the Democrats and 51 Republicans. 3 of those Republicans, sided with the Democrats and said they would oppose the nomination. That means Republicans didn't have enough to confirm him and certainly didn't have "97-3" numbers. That's just pure stupidity to believe that.
