Trump struggles to say Mike Pence's name and blames energy efficient light bulbs for making him 'look orange' during bizarre speech

Donald Trump   inadvertently renamed his vice-president by mispronouncing   Mike Pence ’s name during a speech.

The US president referred to “Mike Pounce” as he reeled off a list of Republicans in attendance at the party’s annual retreat in Baltimore.

Twitter users were quick to pounce on the error and poke fun at the leader, while memes likening the vice-president to a cat were soon being circulated on social media.

“Mike Pounce sounds like someone who guest MCed a Beastie Boys track,” tweeted historian Kevin Kruse.

“I think Mike Pounce is his Grindr name,” joked comedian Dana Goldberg.

Mr Trump’s verbal slip-up came during a typically meandering speech in which he also mocked Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg's name, stoked fears about illegal immigrants, and blamed energy efficient light bulbs for making him "look orange".

Referring to his decision to   scrap a proposed ban on inefficient light bulbs , the president joked: "People said what's with the light bulb? I said here’s the story, and I looked at it. The bulb that we're being forced to use, number one, to me, most importantly: the light's no good, I always look orange."

Mr Trump announced earlier this month that he was rolling back an Obama-era rule that would have seen the US transition to energy-saving LED bulbs and other low-electricity lighting.

During Thursday night's speech, he also suggested "nobody" lived in the US 25 years ago and told California Republican Kevin McCarthy he was "just like a cow" but "smaller".

He delivered the address at a hotel hosting the 2019 House Republican Conference Member Retreat dinner.

Trump Ditches Sound Energy Policy For His Own Vanity: 'I Always Look Orange'

710c91c0-4b9c-11e7-8912-374be9390b1b_H-1-.png.cf.jpg   Lee Moran, HuffPost   3 hours ago

5d7b785c240000122779540c.jpg President Donald Trump on Thursday defended his administration’s  recent reversal of requirements  for more energy-efficient lightbulbs.

Speaking at  an event in Baltimore , Trump said the “number one” reason for his rollback of the rules (that were scheduled to  come into force  on Jan. 1, 2020) was because “the light’s no good” under more efficient bulbs.

“I always look orange,” he complained. “And so do you, the light is the worst.”

It echoed comments that Trump made at a rally in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Monday.

“I’m not a vain person,” he told his supporters. “But I look better under an incandescent light than these crazy lights that are beaming down on me.”

The Energy Department said the lightbulb rollback will return “choice to consumers.” Critics claim it will harm the environment and force households to spend more on energy.

I don't know about the "religious right", which you seem to have such hate for, but as far as I'm concerned the left should be condemned. If I could I would have the lefties sentenced to ten years of community service. Maybe they should do the work of the kids employed by the supermarkets to bring in shopping carts. The only difference is that I'd have the lefties doing it bare-assed. I don't know if it could ever make up for what they've done to this country, but it would be a good start!

Isn't paying for the bankrupt Red States punishment enough? Virtually every one of the top 20 most federally dependent States are ruby Red.

I'm sure you'd consider me a "leftie" but I've been working since I was 13. I had a paper route and collated newspapers for a local weekly paper till I was 15, then worked for a commercial janitorial service, then worked at a bike shop repairing bicycles and putting together newly purchased bikes (mostly Schwinn & Specialized), then started work full time as a roofer the following Monday after graduating high school on Friday (my evangelical parents didn't believe in higher education they wanted me to go into the ministry so it was all bible study) and a few years later I got into construction quality control and testing and building inspection which I did for over a decade during which I went to college taking night courses and eventually got into the insurance business now 20 years ago. I've been in between jobs once but even then I did part time work laying tile, I have never taken a dime of unemployment or any other government entitlement and always paid my taxes on time. So this BS representation of supposedly "lazy" leftists wanting free handouts as I so often hear from the right is nothing but hog wash. Get your fingers out of your ears, try reading between the lines of the spin every now and then instead of buying the myopic right wing narrative sound bites hook, line and sinker.

If you're suggesting that the "lefties" should be sentenced to 10 years of community service, yet it's the deep Red States who are actually the most dependent on federal assistance programs, it seems to me you are looking in the wrong direction for those deserving of a community service sentencing. And it's not a "narrative", it's a fact. Do I feel bad for some of my out of work family in Ohio? Sure I do, but the fact that several of them (and many in their neighborhood) sit on their couches cheering Trump while complaining that they lost their manufacturing jobs instead of going and getting retrained to do some tech industry jobs where the US has a shortage of skilled workers and has to import skilled workers from India and China quickly evaporates any pity I had for them. And I believe that mental defeatism I see in them also leads to the 30% obesity rates in most Red States. The top 10 fattest States are all right wing Republican strongholds yet you're suggesting it's the "lefties" who need to get to work.

Suppose they aren't good in math?  How do they support their families while being retrained? Why are we simply conceding the manufacturing sector to the third world?  Did you hear what Liz Warren said last night? She said before another trade deal is negotiated labor unions need to sit at the table and we shouldn't be having trade deals with countries who use cheap labor. Funny how after so much damage the left has come to this point. Ya, it's election time again.

Everywhere I look I see the side effects of this terrible ideology. Are you aware of what goes on in inner city public schools?

It's not like they are trying to roll back regulations, overturn pollution regulations, give companies tax breaks when they already pay little, turn on our allies while sucking up to dictators, enrich their own companies while holding the highest office, never hold a press conference on policy, fire anyone not loyal, bypass normal procedure, demean and villainize anyone that doesn't tow the line, treat the senate like it is a one body legislation while gleefully calling oneself a grim reaper of the senate...

I'm referring to leftist ideology.

Yes, the ideology of hard work, helping your community, giving back, paying taxes so everyone can enjoy the benefits of society, empathy, compassion, equality, justice. Those are the "lefts" ideology, which you would realize if you just stopped listening to the constant lies from right wing media about what the left represents. I have never been for "open borders" even though I've grown up with no complete southern or northern border wall as I believe, as most experts do, that a contiguous border wall would be an extreme waste of resources and not actually make anyone safer. I'm not for "free stuff" though I do believe in a society that gives a hand up to those born into poverty with few doors out of that vicious cycle, and I believe most of those who are helped will pay it forward. My brother in law had a back injury from a car accident 20 some years ago with soft tissue damage, was prescribed opioids, couldn't work and was on disability for years, gained weight and was over 300 lbs. I got him to move out to California and got him off the opioids with the help of some THC, he got government aid to get trained as a masseuse, lost 110 lbs, got back to work and is now off all disability and government programs, co-owns a physical therapy business and pays taxes becoming a productive member of society. So it's not a "free stuff" society that the left support, but it is a compassionate society that attempts to get people back to being productive instead of just letting people who have suffered health issues, extreme poverty and accidental injuries rot away on some couch somewhere.

Only those I've spoken to on the right don't see the expectation of giving back that comes with the lefts compassionate ideology. They see someone trying to give you free fishing lessons as a hand out instead of the intent to make them self sufficient. And when you tell them the expectation is to give back to society when you're back on your feet all they hear is "socialism!" "communism!" "evil taxes!". It's total nonsense, but there in lies much of the problem, a profound misunderstanding of "leftist" ideology.

"what the left has done to this country"
such as?

Liberals fought to free the slaves, those who fought to keep their slaves considered themselves religious conservatives.

Liberals fought for women and black Americans right to vote, those who fought to keep the status quo of white male votes only considered themselves religious conservatives.

Liberals fought to get rid of segregation, those who fought to keep their supposed "separate but equal" racist society considered themselves religious conservatives.

Liberals fought for the right of interracial and gay couples to marry, those who fought to keep bans on gay and interracial marriage considered themselves religious conservatives.

Liberals fought for the right of gay and transgender Americans to serve in the military like any other American citizen, those who fought to prevent them from serving consider themselves religious conservatives.

The "left" has done a lot to this country through the last 240+ years and we should be thanking them every day for it. Those who stood up to the status quo of their times and fought for what was right even though it wasn't easy and they were often attacked and ridiculed for it, but thank goodness they didn't give up. They didn't always win every battle, but we know by how far we've come that they are winning the war. I think that's what has so many of the old school religious conservatives so angry, they see how far the nation has come away from their "conservative values" and get bitter and angry at our progress, screaming about people being too PC because they started feeling the derision for clinging to those old conservative ideas of separate but equal. Sadly, we've taken a few steps backwards with Trump championing their conservative views, emboldening them to step forward and claim their xenophobic, homophobic, Islamophobic, sexist title of "deplorable".

There have been liberals and conservatives in both parties and my comment said nothing about party affiliation. Southern Democrats considered themselves religious conservatives, those who created the KKK considered themselves white Christian conservatives. Todays Republican party looks nothing like the abolitionists of the past, they look nothing like the party that selected Abraham Lincoln as their candidate for President. The Republican party of today was taken over by the religious conservatives over the last forty years and now is unrecognizable from the party they were at their founding, just like the Democrat party of today looks nothing like many of those racist white religious conservatives who claimed the Democrat name in the past.

Exactly, the first progressive Democratic President actually re segregated the federal government and the KKK openly worked for the election of his progressive  son-in- law, William Gibbs McAdoo  at the famous Democratic Klanbake convention against Al Smith, the Democrat would go onto to oppose the New Deal.

Also, I shouldn't have limited it to southerners. The KKK was actually more popular in the North when it was relevant.

Women fought for it, as did like-minded men.  After all, lacking the vote, women couldn't very well get laws passed in favor of themselves, could they?  Same with ending slavery and bringing about civil rights for black Americans - when the system is rigged in such a way as to deny a group a voice, the help of others is necessary.

Those "others" have been liberals, by and large.

large numbers of southern progressives joined

Please do show some evidence to support that. The KKK were about as "progressive" as Rue Paul is "conservative".

"Historically, the First Klan used terrorism – both physical assault and murder – against politically active blacks and their allies in the South in the late 1860s, until it was suppressed around 1872. All three movements have called for the "purification" of American society and all are considered right-wing extremist organizations "

" Rooted in local Protestant communities, (the KKK) sought to maintain white supremacy , often took a pro-Prohibition stance, and it opposed Catholics and Jews, while also stressing its opposition to the alleged political power of the Pope and the Catholic Church."

"Six Confederate veterans from Pulaski, Tennessee created the original Ku Klux Klan on December 24, 1865, shortly after the Civil War, during the Reconstruction of the South".

"Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest was elected the first Grand Wizard, and claimed to be the Klan's national leader"

"The second Klan grew primarily in response to issues of declining morality typified by divorce, adultery, defiance of Prohibition , and criminal gangs in the news every day. It was also a response to the growing power of Catholics and American Jews and the accompanying proliferation of non-Protestant cultural values ."

" Members of the KKK swore to uphold American values and Christian morality , and some Protestant ministers became involved at the local level."

Sounds like they were heavily invested in protecting the white male Christian patriarchy status quo, I saw no mention of any "southern progressives" or the term "progressive" used at all. You may not like it, but the KKK is just a more extreme version of the average right wing white southerner. It's why they have embraced and been embraced by the Republican party. Sure, they know the Republican leadership will come out with a wink and a nudge speaking in monotone "We do not endorse white supremacy" but they hear all the dog whistles being blown of anti-immigrant, anti-minority, anti-lgtbq messages that they share with fellow Republicans, and they heard it loud and clear when Trump called those representing them in Charlottesville, "fine people" which is why David Duke and Richard Spencer both came out to applaud Trumps comments. They hear Republican Steve King ask whats so bad about being a white nationalist, what's so wrong with having "white pride".
