Bernie Sanders has heart procedure for artery blockage, cancels events until ‘further notice’

Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I-VT) campaign announced Wednesday that the presidential candidate had two stents inserted after the discovery of a blocked artery and that he will canceling his upcoming events for now.

“During a campaign event yesterday evening, Sen. Sanders experienced some chest discomfort,” Senior Advisor Jeff Weaver said in a statement. “Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted. Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”

Bernie Sanders will never be president of the United States, but he will go down in history, favorably, for being the "Moses" of the income inequality movement.  One day his dreams will be reality in America.

What Sanders advocates is higher taxes on the wealthy to pay for the welfare of the working class and poor, and higher wages for the low end of the wage scale.

At some point that will become a reality at least to some extent. America is not sustainable with preference given to billionaires and our oligarchs.

The richest 1% of America's households own   40 % of the   country 's   wealth – the biggest proportion in 50 years, according to a new paper by economist Edward N. Wolff. Older story but I am sure it is still relevant to an even larger extent........

The top-earning 1 percent of Americans will pay nearly half of the federal income taxes for 2014, the largest share in at least three years, according to a study.

According to a projection from the non-partisan Tax Policy Center, the top 1 percent of Americans will pay 45.7 percent of the individual income taxes in 2014—up from 43 percent in 2013 and 40 percent in 2012 (the oldest period available).

The bottom 80 percent of Americans are expected to pay 15 percent of all federal income taxes in 2014, according to the study. The bottom 60 percent are expected to pay less than 2 percent of federal income taxes.

I'd be fine with a flat tax as long as it applied to all income including carried interest and all the tax shelters and loopholes were closed. The OMB estimates that tax loopholes cost America $1.2 trillion a year. Just closing the loopholes would balance the budget and give us a surplus instead of a deficit. Sadly, those who take advantage of the loopholes control the politicians on both sides of the aisle so they're never actually going to close them no matter how much America suffers and sinks deeper into debt.

Yes, government benefits are a form of welfare. So what?

I get a kick out of people who dont realize that poor people are an essential part of the capitalist economic system.  You probably think that if people just werent lazy everyone would make a living wage or be "successful". Capitalism requires a "race to the bottom" for wages, on the part of the employer. There will always be people who are not paid enough to provide for themselves or a family. Always. It is part of the system.

So, when you are forced to pay part of your large salary or earnings to give "welfare" to the poor, just consider it part of the cost of doing business in a country that allows people like you to make a lot of money.

The poor and unemployed play a role in the economy that is NECESSARY to an economy of WINNERS AND LOSERS. Capitalism.

Our founders unanimously opposed income taxes as tyrannical.  The income tax is listed by Marx as essential to destroy capitalism and move to first socialism and ultimately communism

The day the income tax was imposed we moved from being free citizens to subjects.  A free citizens owns the fruit of their labor. A subject keeps what the government allows them to have

A flat tax is inherently unfair.  Everyone has to pay a certain amount of money just to exist in this world, food, gasoline, clothing, etc.

These "essentials" eat up a much larger percentage of your income in line with the less income you have.  And vice versa, rich people spend a far less percentage of their income on essentials.

A flat tax leaves the wealthy keeping a much larger percentage of their original income than poor people or working class people.  This is the reality that led to the progressive income tax.

Works for me.

Mortgage interest deductions----  GONE

State and local tax deductions---  GONE

Earned income tax credits---         GONE

Child care tax credits----                GONE

And the list goes on and on.

We would have to have a flat tax for all income but there would be a much larger individual tax deduction of something like $25,000. So the first $25,000 of income for each individual is tax free. Then a flat 15% tax on all income over that no matter how much you earn. If you're a hedge fund manager and earned $1 billion that year your first $25,000 is tax free and then you'd pay 15% on $999,975,000 making your income tax to be paid that year $149,996,250. No loopholes, no tax dodges, no charities set up to lobby the government to let you pay less in taxes or create new loopholes. And, since the Citizens United ruling determined corporations are people too, they would get the same deal, just without the individual tax credit since they aren't an individual but would be able to write off operating costs. If your company made $1 billion in income but spent $100M on payroll and operating costs then they would pay 15% on $900M or $135M in income tax.

And child tax credits would stay and be increased to $15,000 per child. So a family of four making $100,000 a year would get their individual tax credit of $25,000 for each parent plus two kids at $15,000 each making the total tax credit $80,000 so they would pay tax on $20,000 making their federal income tax $3,000. If that family made $200,000 a year then they would pay 15% on $120,000 so their tax bill would be $18,000. If they made $1M annual then they would pay 15% on $920,000 or $138,000 in income tax. Any family of four making $80,000 or less would pay zero federal income tax since they are already spending nearly all that income on living expenses anyway. The current national median income for a family of four was $61,372 so the vast majority of families in America would see their federal income tax drop to zero. This would allow them to afford health insurance and free up a lot of spending money which goes directly back into the economy paying for goods and services families really need.

It would be far simpler and no one would be "penalized" for being rich, they get the same deduction everyone else gets and pay the same tax everyone else does on any money over their standard deduction.

No.  It doesn't.  That's just something socialists say because they don't begin to understand the thought process.

There will always be people who are not paid enough to provide for themselves or a family. Always. It is part of the system.

The beauty of capitalism is that it continually raises expectations.  100 years ago, "provide for a family", meant a roof over their heads and food on the table.  Frequently the roof was self constructed and the food was self grown.

Now, the roof sits over an air-conditioned space with a flat screen TV.  We even have dipshit Millennials trying to tell us that high speed internet is a human right.

They never heard of people like Henry Ford who understood that he needed to pay his workers enough to be in a position to be able to buy the product they were making.

Henry Ford was exceedingly unusual, so while you are definitely correct that they don't understand him...that's not what I'm talking about.  It's more fundamental.

What socialists don't understand is that employers compete for labor.  For example....I pay our college interns $14-$15/hr. Why?  Because by paying that we can get very, very good interns.  They want to work here, and they want to stay after they graduate.

Having very, very good people enables our business to grow, and enables us to compete and win against much larger competitors.  If enough businesses grow, the economy grows, and the pie we're all trying to get a piece of is bigger.  Pretty soon, we're all stuck in a vicious fucking cycle of excellence and prosperity and excellence and prosperity....over and over and over.  The rich get richer and the poor either get better and rich or stay bad do whatever it is poor people do....like watch singing competition shows on television, I suppose?

The entire socialist mentality is based on the idea that workers are roughly equal, despite complete and obvious evidence to the contrary.  As soon as they admit that people have different ability, their entire ideology falls apart.

But it's not just about hard work.  It's about being better.  One of the great lies we tell people is "if you work hard enough, you can be successful".  Well it takes more than that.  They have to stop being dumbasses, also.

“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

Of course Orwell meant that to be an allegory about people.

Obviously Jimmy Carter was right - although I think he really was talking about Biden.
