NICKNAMES - Do you have one?

NICKNAMES - Do you have one?

When I was 4 years old in kindergarten, it was during WW2 and we kids used to run around the school playing field at recess with our arms stretched out and making buzzing sounds like Spitfire fighter planes.  My mother saw me doing this and started to call me "Buzzy", and it didn't take long for it to spread to all the relatives and friends, who then called me by that name.

I hated the name, and insisted to be known by my real name through the rest of public school.

But in high school, the "Buzzy" comic book was popular, and so I reconsidered and even had the name embroidered in script on my "everyday" pea jacket. Most people as I grew older just shortened it to calling me Buzz, and besides eventually there were some famous people called "Buzz", like astronaught Buzz Aldrin, and the gang leader in the James Dean movie Rebel Without a Cause who drove over the cliff was called "Buzz".

th?id=OIP.I_tv1VPUqQcbloF3gOGGFwAAAA&w=1

When I moved to Toronto there was a popular drive-in fast food restaurant called The Carousel with car-hops on skates who brought the food to the cars, and I had this desire to open such a restaurant and to call it "Buzzy's Burgers", but I never did it.

To sign onto NV more than a decade ago I needed a pseudonym, so since I was living in China, and being a classic movie buff with thoughts of the movie "Lawrence of Arabia", I decided on "Buzz of the Orient".

So the name "Buzz" is still what I am called by most people who know me well, and I'm happy with it now.

Now, what about you?  Do you have a nickname?  What is it, and do you still use it?  How and why did you get it?

I'm really surprised you would make such an admission public, or are you thinking about someone else?

My gambling buddies call me "teach". I guess it's an honorary title - one that I never let go to my head!

Don't laugh...Bubbie. When my little Sis first started talking that is how she said Brother. It stuck for many years.

That is pretty cool that it still sticks.

In a family with Jewish lineage Bubbie is your Grandmother. It took a while for some extended family members to adjust to the nick name my little Sis came up for me.

I'm still Sis.  Or if we're with extended family, Sandy Kay, because I have an aunt who's also named Sandy.

I had never heard that one.

My brother and I started out as "Sissy" and "Bubba", but over the years, we shortened it.  My sister is Jen, or, if you want to rib her, Jen-nay (pronounced as Forrest Gump would do).  She hates that movie.

OK remember this guy:

latest?cb=20180328191222

His name was Smedly and he had a very particular snicker..one I used to do naturally and my friends started to call me Smed, a shortened version of his name and it stuck.

They also just call me Pear.

I always thought it was funny that people thought that Perrie was short for something. What could it be short for? Periwinkle?

It came from my passing up an acre of land my friend was selling in NV.  It was only like 200 bucks but I had no use for it.  The Riverside casino now sits on that acre.  I could have sold it for a small fortune to the developers.  The ironic part is the same thing happened to my grandfather.  The Vegas strip now sits on the land he was offered but had to turn down.

For a couple years in high school I was called Duck, apparently because one of the football crowd thought I ran funny.  No biggie and it was pretty short lived
