Chicago murder rate decreases for third year in a row

City officials announced on New Years Day that the murder rate in the city had gone down in Chicago for the third year in a row.   The rate in 2019 was 18 killed per 100,000 population.   (2,700,000/100,000  =27.   490 (murders) /27  = 18.1)  While still quite high, it does show new policing techniques are having some positive result.

By the way, using 2018 figures, the last year for which all cities have reported murder rates, these are the big cities that had a higher rate than Chicago's current 18.

CHICAGO (WLS/CNN) -   Chicago reported a significant drop in yearly homicides for the third year in a row.

Chicago police said there were 490 murders as of Tuesday morning, about 13% fewer than 2018′s total of 564.

That’s about a 35-percent drop from 2016, when Chicago reported its highest number of homicides in two decades, 756.

Leaders in the nation’s third-most populous city believe efforts undertaken since 2016 - hiring more police officers, emphasizing community policing and making investments in social services and schools - have helped lessen violent crime.

“That’s a significant impact. That’s real people who are alive because the city of Chicago has done a better job of protecting its folks,” said Charlie Beck, interim superintendent, Chicago Police Dept. He credited the hard work of getting illegal guns off the street as part of the reason for the decline.

In a press conference Tuesday night, Beck also announced a 17-percent reduction in robberies in the Windy City, an 18-percent reduction in burglaries and a 9.6-percent reduction in shootings compared to last year.

The numbers may change. Final counts will be released after an FBI audit is completed in the next few weeks.

Actual homicides were 513. The mayor told the police department a couple months ago to keep the total under 500.  So, like magic, the official total came in under 500.

there will be dozens of reclassifications over the next months once the mayor gets her press for keeping the total under 500.

Of course, CNN will do anything to make a far left leaning mayor of a far left leaning city look good.

I notice at the bottom of the seed it says the statistics were taken October 11, two and a half months ago.

The numbers may be correct in mid October, but the Chicago Tribune, on December 31, put the murder rate at 515. That may still be a decrease, but not as much as CNN wants you to believe.

CNN has nothing to do with the murder rate in Chicago.

The Chicago Police Dept. says 490. Take your quibbles to them. Obviously they have a different count than whoever you are citing does.

Loki, a story that comes from reputable news organizations is is not fake news.  I should report you for attempted ridiculous harrassment but I will let it slide this time.

Homicides fell below 500 last year in Chicago for the first since 2015, marking the third consecutive year of double-digit decreases, official Police Department statistics show.
The department said Wednesday that 492 people were killed last year, a 13% drop from 567 in 2018 and the fewest since 490 in 2015.
