Iran on Sunday canceled a Tehran ceremony to honor slain general Qassem Soleimani due to an overwhelming turnout by mourners in the country’s second city, Mashhad, the Revolutionary Guards said.

Soleimani’s body arrived in Iran Sunday morning after his death in a US airstrike on Friday.

“Considering the glorious, intense and million-man presence of the revolutionary people of Mashhad in the ceremony to bid farewell to Islam and Iran’s great general Qassem Soleimani and since the program is still continuing… it is not possible to hold the event in Tehran,” the Guards said.

Mourners flooded the Iranian cities of Ahvaz and Mashhad Sunday, weeping and beating their chests in homage to Soleimani. The country’s semi-official Mehr news agency and Fars news reported millions of mourners in the Mashhad procession.

As Shiite chants resonated in the air, people held portraits of the man seen as a hero of the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and for spearheading Iran’s Middle East operations as commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force.

Soleimani was the architect of Iran’s regional policy of mobilizing militias across Iraq, Syria and Lebanon, including in the war against the Islamic State group.

He was also blamed for attacks on US troops and American allies, including Israel, going back decades.

"Going back decades" . . . so why did Trump suddenly decide to off him now?

Real question is why didn't Bush Jr or Obama? Especially since Obama is the one that designated this asshole as terrorist.

Might have something to do with the attack on our embassy in Iraq three days before. Reportedly, the attackers spray-painted "Soleimani is our leader" on the walls. That, his other work with Hezbollah, and any other impending actions he was helping to plan or otherwise support.

Ironic if true.

The Iraqi Prime Minister was the one who dispersed the protesters at the embassy and got the Iraqi Security back on the job in the Green Zone.

According to him, he spoke to President Trump on the phone and Trump thanked him effusively for saving the US embassy.

Soleimani was carrying Iran's response to a message from the Saudi's about deescalation between not only Iran & SA in particular.

but the overall region.

The assassination didn't go over well with the PM because while Trump was thanking him for the embassy, US plans were already underway.

Ditto the Saudi's were pissed because it derailed their diplomatic mission and they were not informed of the strike plans by their US allies.

Abdul Mahdi suggested that the Iranian military leader was in Baghdad as part of Iraqi-mediated negotiations with Iran’s main regional rival, Saudi Arabia.

He said that Soleimani was going to meet him on the same day that he was killed.

‘He came to deliver me a message from Iran, responding to the message we delivered from Saudi Arabia to Iran,’ Abdul Mahdi told The Washington Post.

You mean the security that should have been there from the damn start? Wow, great job, Did he say why that security was absent to begin with?

Does that sound like Trump? Trump doesn't keep anything private. Trump would have publicly thanked him as well. No, no it doesn't. It sounds like someone trying to make himself look better than what he really is.

Right. Maybe the Saudis should have told their allies they were secretly meeting with a known Iranian terrorist? Especially those that have personnel in the area that have been attacked by this asshole?  Seems their secret negotiations aren't so secret anymore thanks to an Iraqi loud mouth.

Better still WTF was Soleimani doing in Iraq at any time? There is a UN ban on him travelling outside of Iran. Maybe the Prime Minister would care to explain why he was allowed free travel in his country at any time?

I know, I know, but Trruuummmmppppp!!!!!!

The sooner we are out that overgrown sand box and let those jackasses get back to doing what they do best, killing each other, the better.

Apparently Iraqi security disarmed the crowd at the gates to the Green Zone, then took a 2 day siesta.

There were no casualties on either side so it was well controlled by 'someone".

Having said this elsewhere, I am still all in favor of withdrawing to Kuwait & SA.

Empty the embassy, lock the doors and gates.

As soon as everyone is out, drop two or three MOABs on our embassy and call it home improvement.

Though it’s unclear how or when Iran may respond, any retaliation was likely to come after three days of mourning declared in both Iran and Iraq.

I've been following this story closely...and have been making some major changes to my stock portfolio in anticipation.

(IMO many Americans are underestimating the likelihood of severe Iranian revenge attacks... as soon as the mourning period is over).

If there are revenge attacks it all falls on Crooked donnie....any attacks on US soil and he's toast.

And before anyone opens their yap, NO I don't want to see any attacks on US soil and if there are people out there thinking that dems/libs want that then they have a screw loose.

I have been following this story closely. The "experts" are divided as to what the nature of the Iranian attacks will be. (Of course none of them don't actually know...and won't 'till it happens).

Among the predominant theories...it probably won't be a conventional military attack, but more likely will be "asymmetrical warfare"...i.e. terrorism.

Perhaps in the U.S....perhaps not,  but rather an attack on U.S. embassies and businesses overseas.

Another strong possibility is a series of series of serious cyber-attacks.

Another theory: Iran itself might not launch many attacks (if any) but rather their "proxies" will: mainly Hizb'Allah. Plus some other radical Shia Islamic groups.

Of course all this is speculation until it happens...which should probably be fairly soon.

If "Iran becomes toast"...what makes you think that will be the end of anti-American violence in the Middle East? (or for that matter the end of assymetrical warfare against U.S. targets worldwide..or even in the U.S.?)

Our Chickenhawk Neo-Con-in-Chief just really pissed off the Iranians-- as well as millions of Shia Muslims worldwide. If he pops Iran into the toaster..how do you think they's feel? How do you think they'd act?

Yes, very sad to see. But's it not that new. Some members here supported  the abuse of American sailors captured by Iran a few years ago.

You still haven't seen anyone wanting the US to be attacked

Yes, of course.

Very astute observation!

In fact the vast majority of Iranians...as well as the Shia militias in Iraq...all of Hizb'Allah..in fact all Shia Moslems worldwide want one thing..peace with the U.S. (And Israel).

Want the U.S. to be attacked?.of course not!

Heck, what they really want is to join hands with Americans...and all sing Kumbaya! (BY Valentine's day, all Islamist extremists worldwide will be sending Americans Happy valentine's Day cards expressing their great love for us.

You still haven't seen anyone wanting the US to be attacked

In fact...most of them will accompany those loving cards with Chocolates (and only the most expensive ones!)

Just like the right isn't support Russia.  You can't name one action that has been taken that has benefited Russia.

But the left keeps repeating the same damn mantra over and over.

Too bad the same can't be said about the left. Crying over a dead terrorist. Cranking up how dangerous Iran is; and running around like chicken little predicting doom.

Iran attacks the US anywhere, at any time, and they deserve whatever they get. Period.

All of the BS from the left over someone that should have been dead a long time ago.

Why does it seem that the left/libs/progs are perfectly OK with this terrorist killing American troops and countless innocent civilians, but when Trump takes out this INTERNATIONALLY DESIGNATED TERRORIST, the same left/libs/progs go, once again, apocalyptic?

Well, we know...

But Truuuuuuuuuuuuuump.

Everyone knows that if it were Obama killing the terrorist, these people would drop to their knees in praise in worship to their messiah. .

Until I saw the massive support for Soleimani by the Iranian population, displayed by the millions mourning him, I was concerned that a retaliatory attack on Iran should avoid the civilian population - now I'm not so sure about that.

Up until that attack...there were demonstrations by Iranians against their own government...and they seemed to be increasing.

But now our Chickenhawk Neo-Con-in-Chief has accomplished what the Ayatollahs haven't been able to do-- there's now much unity between their populace and the government.
