Tucker Carlson: Now is the time to pull out of Iraq for good
So 17 years, trillions of American dollars, more than 35,000 Americans killed or wounded -- you probably know one -- and this is what we get at the end in return: Another Iranian proxy state that hates us," Carlson said

Tucker Carlson said it is time for the U.S. to remove itself from Middle Eastern affairs after years of war in   Iraq   and the surrounding region.

The "Tucker Carlson Tonight" host said Wednesday that President Trump had the right idea in 2007, when the future president said during an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer that there is no way to successfully democratize Iraq.

"So 17 years, trillions of American dollars, more than 35,000 Americans killed or wounded -- you probably know one -- and this is what we get at the end in return: Another Iranian proxy state that hates us," Carlson said.

"They're in a civil war over there, Wolf. There's nothing we're going to be able to do with a civil war... It's going to go to Iran."

"It was good advice then," Carlson said. "We should have taken it ... Let's do it now."

Good, let's leave. I thought we already did that. Aside from what we need to make sure ISIS stays down, fuck that place.

Was a goddamn mistake to go in, and was a goddamn mistake to stay.

The global economy is moving away from fossil fuels anyhow so in 40 years who gives a shit about the ME.

Absolutely we should leave. We never should have gone to Iraq in the 1st place. Remaining there is a waste of time, money, resources, and American troops lives.

Fine with me. We're mostly out of Iraq already. From what I read, we only have about 5 or 6,000 people deployed there now, and some of those are coming from Syria. If the Iranians and Hezbollah had just let us alone, we might have left even sooner. Poking at us with attacks is only going to prompt us to stay.

Which is why our policy is so f*ckin' stupid!

(Ticker's "stopped clock act" is right for once...)

Good oint.

If they continue to attack we must stay-- because at this point its important to have more American soldiers killed.

(If they stopped killing us there's be no point in staying-- we would instead send our soldiers elsewhere, where the chances of their being attacked would be better..)

Yeppers!  Remember what Trump said a couple of months ago with the Syria mess?  He said, "We have the oil!  We are protecting our oil, and we will decide what to do with it."  source

Keep in mind that Trump owns nearly 2 million shares of Exxon Mobil.  When EM had to evacuate employees due to tensions with Iran , Trump was losing money every day those fields were not producing.  There is always a personal angle with that jackass.  ALWAYS.

You are correct; but it is not oil for the US. It is oil for our NATO allies. Most of which just fled Iraq leaving the US once again to do all of the heavy lifting.

Now, just remember the amount of BS and blow back Trump received when trying to pull troops out of Afghanistan. Not just from the Neocons on both sides of the isle, but from the anti Trump chicken hawks, his own military advisers, intelligence agencies, and state department.

What is the difference between Syria and Iraq? We get to deal with all of the same factions, plus the Turks, Russians, and Chinese (The Chinese may have gotten bored and went home. Haven't much from them other than they are monitoring things.). Syria has asked us several times to end our illegal presence there.  Yet in Syria we stay.

Think pulling out of Iraq will be any easier? We have been allied with the Iraqi Kurds much longer. I am sure the Pentagon, State Department, and intelligence agencies can come up with a myriad of reasons to keep troops in Iraq. If nothing else than a bulwark against the Iranians getting a clean ground corridor to run into Syria, and from there Lebanon & Jordan. I am sure the same people that brayed about Trump betraying the Syrian Kurds will be back for his betrayal of the Iraqi Kurds.

I am all for leaving. We just need to get the powers that be on board.

While the US is no longer "dependent" on ME oil and is only importing about 14% of it's crude from the ME,

particularly Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, it remains the consensus that 70 to 80% of the worlds crude oil reserves are

in the ME.

That has strategic ramifications beyond having our troops guarding Syrian oil wells or Saudi refineries.

We don't need their oil, but our allies do. That's why we have to have a presence in the region.

America is an empire, and has been to one extent or another since the Spanish American war at the end of the 19th century. An empire sends its young people, as soldiers,  here and there to influence world events to the empires liking. We want to be able to influence events in the middle east to our liking, so we have troops there. Unfortunately the people in the middle east are not as welcoming to us as the people in Germany or South Korea are.
