It looks like about 100 people, or roughly 2% of those polled, thought Iran is in the western hemisphere.

My mistake. 100 is 5% of 2000.

This kind of thing makes me hate our species.

Absolutely true. It's estimated that 6% of young people in the US cannot identify the United States on a map. This is an older document but I cannot believe our educational system has gotten any better over the years.

I was quite amused by that article.  One of the reports indicated that...

"Three quarters said English was the most commonly spoken native language in the world. It is actually third, behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish."

Notwithstanding that, English is considered the "International Language" (much to the dismay of the French who wanted it to be their language) because it is spoken in more countries in the world than any other language.  It should be noted that airline pilots (at least those who might fly to countries foreign to their own) are required to be able to speak English.  I would assume that ground-based flight control staff would also be so required.

Fewer than a quarter of registered voters were able to identify Iran on a world map in a   survey conducted by Morning Consult   over the weekend. Just 23 percent of poll respondents were able to properly pick out Iran; When presented with a smaller map, showing just the Middle East, the number rose to 28 percent.

Morning Consult’s Joanna Piacenza tweeted a map of the world showing where people think Iran is located.

Men, wealthy people, and those with more education were more likely to correctly label Iran. But it’s clear that some of the answers are not serious. No one thinks Iran is in the middle of the ocean or the middle of Kansas. Right?

Piacenza tweeted that she was inspired by a similar survey conducted in 2017 that asked Americans to   try to find North Korea on a map . Thirty-six percent were able to meet that challenge.

I recently had a coworker insist that Guyana, Suriname and French Guyane were all in Africa.

later they changed their guess to 'islands in the Caribbean'.....

and these people are registered voters ... jrSmiley_72_smiley_image.gif

If only we knew what happens when you die, suicide might be a pretty decent option. Skip all that bullshit.

Is it crazy that I think people should be able to identify at least the 20 largest countries on a map?

Gotta love American ed! Some people actually put Iran within the US in that survey... does our species really deserve to exist beyond this planet?

Yes. Absolutely. Because I have it on good authority that size doesn't matter.

I played too much Risk in my "youth".

What pisses me off now is all of the African countries who had the audacity to change the names the Europeans gave them.

I wouldn't be sarcastic about that - I learned African countries' original names back in the late 1940s and now I don't recognize half the names.
