National Weather Service issues alert for falling iguanas

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Miami issued an alert for falling iguanas Tuesday as temperatures are expected to drop.
As temperatures are predicted to drop into in the 30s inland and 40s along the coast, iguanas could fall from trees as they slow down or become immobile. The reptiles react this way to falling temperatures because they are cold-blooded.
“This isn't something we usually forecast, but don't be surprised if you see Iguanas falling from the trees tonight as lows drop into the 30s and 40s,” the NWS in Miami tweeted.
“They may fall from trees, but they are not dead,” it continued.
Iguanas are native to South America, Central America and the Caribbean but have developed a population in South Florida through the pet trade, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported .

A USA fire fighting plane has crashed with the loss of 3 USA firies. To come all this way to help us in our hour of need and this has happened. To the families of the lost souls we shed tears with you. Your loss is immense but know they will never be forgotten, we will remember them and treasure them. They are in safe hands. My father had a place in St. Pete where the park across the road had a small lake, there was a cold spell one year that the water turned cold enough that the fish suffocated and died, because being warm water fish their gills couldn't operate in the cold.
Now that is a first for me. I have never heard of that happening, but it does make sense.

Iguanas are an invasive species in Florida so any die off resulting from this cold snap is actually not a bad thing. Hopefully some pythons get taken out as well
This is true. They were family pets that got lose and did well on vegetation in FLA.
The past two days have been bitterly cold for us Floridians. Yesterday the high was a very chilly 63 degrees. Today was worse, the high was 57, bone chilling cold and with the wind chill factor it was 55 degrees.
Not only are the Iguana's falling out of the trees the Manatees are wearing dive suits to deep warm.
Thankfully tomorrow it will be back into the mid 70's. Winter in Florida will be over.

It's been in the teens at night here, and my little doxie mix stays under the covers after I get out of bed. I find myself being jealous of a dog's life.
Can't blame you. Wally is curled up under the blanket, too. The irony of the snowshoe breed is that they are actually warm weather cats.
Just for a little perspective for the past two weeks it's been in the -30's F here. The cold actually killed my car battery last Wed.

My dad moved down to Tampa over 20 years ago and even though he was born and raised in Canada I know he spent the last couple days hiding inside with the heat cranked.
I'm 100 miles NE of Tampa and the temps are pretty much same here as in Tampa. After 20 years in Tampa he had a parka on the last few days...LOL
Not a joke , but my news feed says there is a spiked increase on the sales sites in Miami for taco meat....

So any way I have about 20 Barbary ducks that spend the day in front of my house vying for space near the front storm door so they can watch what we are doing and anticipate treats ( whole corn, some peanuts) .
Any way, washing the side walk a few times a day is a must and the geckos have just hatched.
I saw one baby swimming for his life in a puddle and moved him to the grass to wait out the cold snap expected that night.
An hour or so later and he appeared to be dead as a door nail on the sidewalk, so I gently picked him up, certain he was dead and moved him
to a spot under the rose bush where he would, at the very least, not be duck food.
The next morning there he was, alive again, and this time when I reached for him
he moved like greased lightning.

I think I told this before but true story.
I opened the trunk of a car on a really cold morning and found a bee. I thought it was dead. I gently picked it up and held it in the palm of my hand facing the sun. After a couple of minutes it started to move. Little bit longer and it got up on its legs. Little bit more and it started to flex its wings and crawl. Then crawled to the tip of my index finger and flew off.
The article made me think of the plagues in Egypt. Maybe everyone should coat their doorposts with lamb's blood.
