Student-teacher in Tennessee dismissed over Black History Month assignment on slavery
The young educator was "teaching material that was not age appropriate," Nashville Public Schools said.

A Tennessee school district dismissed   a student-teacher   after the young educator taught a Black History Month lesson to fourth-graders, asking them to recite graphic, violent methods to control slaves, officials said Thursday.

The student-teacher's lesson plan, given to youngsters at Waverly Belmont Elementary School in Nashville, was centered around the notorious — and perhaps apocryphal — 1712 speech by slave owner William Lynch, "The Making of a Slave," officials said.

After reading the material in which Lynch purportedly advocated for physical and psychological torture of slaves, students were asked, "To keep their slaves subservient, plantation owners should" with a series of blank bullet points for youngsters to fill in.

"A student-teacher was dismissed and asked not to return to Waverly-Belmont as a result of teaching material that was not age appropriate or within the scope of sequence for the 4th grade class," according to a statement by Metro Nashville Public Schools.

"Metro Schools regrets if any students or parents were caused pain as a result of this incident. District leaders have been working with school administrators and parents to address concerns for the students involved.”

The class' full-time teacher was in the room as this lesson was delivered on Monday and "he has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the Metro Schools investigation into this matter," according to a statement by district spokesman Sean Braisted,

Parent Karen Lockert, who is black, said her fourth-grade son was troubled by the material and wondered out loud of his white classmates thought less of him.

"He felt that sense of looking differently at his friends," Lockert told NBC News. "For me, I said, `We're not going to look differently at people unless they treat you differently.' "

The student-teacher is an African American female student form nearby Vanderbilt University, according to Braisted and Lockert.

"They said they have tried to inspire their students to think outside the box," said Lockert, who works as a literacy coach for Nashville Public Schools. "They (Vanderbilt) actually approved this lesson."

A Vanderbilt spokesman said the university was cooperating with the school system and called the incident "an unfortunate situation."

“The student teacher experience, where seasoned classroom teachers serve as mentors, is an invaluable one," according to a Vanderbilt statement. "This was an unfortunate situation for all involved. We will continue to work with Metro Nashville Public Schools to ensure that students, student-teachers, and mentors benefit from engaging in the classroom and working together.”

Waverly Belmont Elementary School is about 47 percent white and 43 percent African America, according the system's most recent data from the 2018-19 academic year.

In addition to the criticism over asking 9-year-olds to recite brutal methods to control slaves, historians have long questioned whether the   Lynch speech or letter are even real.

The Lynch address — which came to prominence in 1990s speeches by   Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan   — is riddled with language, references and scenarios either uncommon or simply not in use in the early 18th century.

Noted African American playwright and novelist Darryl Pinckney, in his 2019 collection of essays, "Busted in New York," said the purported Lynch writings are nothing more than “a parable about fear, envy, distrust” and control, “the means by which blacks are kept disunited."

Fourth grade students are to young for this type of material.

However, history should never be ignored or hidden.

Well It Is Me, I guess your concern goes to what an individual considers appropriate and harmful. One thing by degrees is designed to enhance life for a class of people who experience dire straits in society. That said, kids are resilient as their adult counterparts. But the educator community determined that this was not the occasion and I am going with them. Moreover, this story has holes in the sense that Vanderbilt's role in approving this specific material for this instruction has not been fully explained. Why didn't the school not know what was in the curriculum ahead of it being opened in class? Who thought to keep it secret (from the authorities)? Was their malice of intent involved. And so forth and so on.

We do not have closure from what has been presented.

Now let me go a step farther and present the questionable materials for all to read:

Page 1 of 4 The Willie Lynch Letter: The Making Of A Slave! This speech was delivered by Willie Lynch on the bank of the James River in the colony of Virginia in 1 712. Lynch was a British slave owner in the West Indies. He was invited to the colony of Virginia in 1712 to teach his methods to slave owners there. The term "lynching" is derived from his last name.

December 25, 1712 Gentlemen:

I greet you here on the bank of the James River in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and twelve. First, I shall thank you, the gentlemen of the Colony of Virginia, for bringing me here. I am here to help you solve some of your problems with slaves.

Your invitation reached me on my modest plantation in the West Indies, where I have experimented with some of the newest and still the oldest methods for control of slaves. Ancient Rome's would envy us if my program is implemented. As our boat sailed south on the James River, named for our illustrious King, whose version of the Bible we cherish, I saw enough to know that your problem is not unique. While Rome used cords of wood as crosses for standing human bodies along its highways in great numbers, you are here using the tree and the rope on occasions. I caught the whiff of a dead slave hanging from a tree, a couple miles back.

You are not only losing valuable stock by hangings, you are having uprisings, slaves are running away, your crops are sometimes left in the fields too long for maximum profit, You suffer occasional fires, your animals are killed. Gentlemen, you know what your problems are; I do not need to elaborate. I am not here to enumerate your problems, I am here to introduce you to a method of solving them. In my bag here, I have a foolproof method for controlling your black slaves. I guarantee every one of you that if installed correctly it will control the slaves for at least 300 years [201 2].

My method is simple. Any member of your family or your overseer can use it. I have outlined a number of differences among the slaves and make the differences bigger. I use fear, distrust and envy for control. These methods have worked on my modest plantation in the West Indies and it will work throughout the South. Take this simple little list of differences and think about them. On top of my list is "age" but it's there only because it starts with an "A."

The second is "COLOR" or shade, there is intelligence, size, sex, size of plantations and status on plantations, attitude of owners, whether the slaves live in the valley, on a hill, East, West, North, South, have fine hair, course hair, or is tall or short. Now that you have a list of differences, I shall give you an outline of action, but before that, I shall assure you that distrust is stronger than trust and envy stronger than adulation, respect or admiration.

The Black slaves after receiving this indoctrination shall carry on and will become self refueling and self generating for hundreds of years, maybe thousands. Don't forget you must pitch the old black Male vs. the young black Male, and the young black Male against the old black male. You must use the dark skin slaves vs. the light skin slaves, and the light skin slaves vs. the dark skin slaves.

You must use the female vs. the male. And the male vs. the female. You must also have you white servants and overseers distrust all Blacks. It is necessary that your slaves trust and depend on us. They must love, respect and trust only us.

Gentlemen, these kits are your keys to control. Use them. Have your wives and children use them, never miss an opportunity. If used intensely for one year, the slaves themselves will remain perpetually distrustful of each other. Thank you gentlemen

So your in favor what the African American female Teacher was teaching ?

Personally, I don't have a problem with it. My daughter is in 4th grade and they're reading about Anne Frank and concentration camps and gas chambers, I don't see this discussion as being much different. Teaching 4th graders about the horrors of slavery seems quite appropriate as long as it's done in a way that doesn't glorify it or normalize it.

As for showing children, no matter how young, that our lgtbq friends and neighbors are as normal as having short and tall people, blondes and brunettes, left handed and right handed people, should obviously be seen as positive and helps move us further from the vile hate, discrimination and bigotry that some sad sacks of worthless in our country seem determined not to give up. They may gnash their teeth at progress, but we're moving forward with or without them and there is simply nothing they can do about it which is why they are so triggered by any display of courage, inclusion and diversity.

Progress is not teaching all the Adult "Social Issues" to "Kiddies". Progress is getting kiddies knowledgeable in really important things like Math, Science, Geography, ....etc.

that he must perform in getting out "our crops" and he knows the language well, he would know that "our crops" didn't mean "our crops" and the slavery system would break down, for he would relate on the basis of what "our crops" really meant. So you have to be careful in setting up the new language for the slaves would soon be in your house, talking to you "man to man" and that is death to our economic system. In addition, the definitions of words or terms are only a minute part of the process. Values are created and transported by communication through the body of the language. A total society has many interconnected value system. All the values in the society have bridges of language to connect them for orderly working in the society. I am sorry, but transgenderism is NOT akin to slavery.. What occurs in a sexual type/sub-class, is not the same as what occurs in a classification based on race/ethnicity alone.

I am not a fan of teaching too much about sex without prompting from children themselves. That being said, they are more likely to run into a transgender person than have to deal with how to bring up a slave. 

Remember there was a time when people didn't say the word pregnant, show married people in bed together or show interfaith or interracial couples either. On the other hand, kids are not allowed to be kids without having to deal with so many big life questions.

Cardinal Principles for making a Negro

For fear that our future Generations may not understand the principles of breaking both of the beast together, the nigger and the horse. We understand that short range planning economics results in periodic economic chaos; so that to avoid turmoil in the economy, it requires us to have breath and depth in long range comprehensive planning, articulating both skill sharp perceptions. This narrative is coarse and it is an immediate affront to a individual person black or other living today, because it produces in the mind of the reader - be it child or adult - a sense that there is no recourse left. Yes, young children can/will/do discern that this kind of "problem" presents without solution when put and kept in place. Young kids are very discerning for their age.

HISTORY….is still part of the "Public School" Curriculum , "Good" or "Bad" !

Now I will say my piece. 

As an educator, this material is not age appropriate. It is asking children to think out of the box about treating humans inhumanely and could actually desensitize them to the ugliness that slavery was. This material is more for middle school or junior high. It's not that it's teaching them the facts of what happened, but actually encouraging children to think like slave owners and that is a bit intense for children who don't have a strong moral compass or sense of themself yet.

Yes, there are novels like "Mandingo" (1957) which float around like titillating little "sex-starter" readers for young hormonal -budding adolescents, who while they discovered taboo passions in a novel, also got a concentration of 17th century plantation life in our country (from a writer's perspective).
