Cheatin' Songs

I'll kick us off with a couple of oldies

Alright, let's not pretend that none of us have never cheated or been cheated on. I'm not gonna tell, just let the music do the talking.

Not sure that's a cheatin' song so much as a raging jealousy song. But, still a good song.

Good song, not sure it's a cheatin' song. More like a longing for someone who can't see him song.

Freddy Fender, Before the Next Teardrop falls, would fit in the category too. Still, really good song, thanks. I never heard it before.

This is a Garth song. And it uses a montage of Garth pictures.  But I don't think this is Garth.  He's known to be a REAL butthead about having his videos on youtube. A LOT of videos that are attributed to him are really covers disguised as his.

I could be wrong, been wrong more than once, but I've seen several reports about Garth and his antipathy to youtube.

I want you to know that I'm happy for you I wish nothing but the best for you both An older version of me Is she perverted like me? Would she go down on you in a theatre? Does she speak eloquently? And would she have your baby? I'm sure she'd make a really excellent mother 'Cause the love that you gave, that we made wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no And every time you speak her name Does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you die, 'til you die? But you're still alive And I'm here to remind you Of the mess you left when you went away It's not fair to deny me Of the cross I bear that you gave to me You, you, you oughta know You seem very well, things look peaceful I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know Did you forget about me, Mr. Duplicity? I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner It was a slap in the face How quickly I was replaced And are you thinking of me when you f*** her? 'Cause the love that you gave that we made wasn't able to make it enough for you to be open wide, no And every time you speak her name Does she know how you told me you'd hold me until you die, 'til you die? But you're still alive And I'm here to remind you Of the mess you left when you went away It's not fair to deny me Of the cross I bear that you gave to me You, you, you oughta know 'Cause the joke that you laid in the bed: that was me, and I'm not gonna fade as soon as you close your eyes And you know it And every time I scratch my nails down someone else's back I hope you feel it Well, can you feel it? Well, I'm here to remind you Of the mess you left when you went away It's not fair to deny me Of the cross I bear that you gave to me You, you, you oughta know I am here to remind you Of the mess you left when you went away It's not fair to deny me Of the cross I bear that you gave to me You, you, you oughta know

I know this a good song and that it's really popular but as far as I'm concerned, Alanis peaked on You Can't Say That On Television. She's just not my cup of tea. I think it has to do with the fact that she has no idea what irony is.

Some facts that many people don't know, this is about Uncle Joey on Full House. Dave Coulier. Alanis was just a younger woman he had a fling with as far as he was concerned. She took it more seriously, clearly.

And the movie she went down on him was The Lion King.

Woody Guthrie – Gypsy Davy Lyrics

from album: Woody Guthrie, Vol. 1 (1952)
It was late last night when the boss come home
He's askin' about his lady
The only answer he received, "She's gone with the
Gypsy Davy, gone with the gypsy Davy"

"Go saddle for me my buskin' horse
And a hundred dollars saddle
Point out to me their wagon tracks
And after them I'll travel, after them I'll ride"

Well, I had not rode 'til the midnight moon
When I saw the campfire gleaming
I heard the notes of the big guitar
And the voice of the gypsy singin'

That song of the gypsy Dave
There in the light of the camping fire
I saw her fair face beaming
Her heart in tune with the big guitar

And the voice of the gypsy singing
That song of the gypsy Dave
Have you forsaken your house and home
Have you forsaken your baby

Have you forsaken your husband dear
To go to the gypsy Davy
And sing with the gypsy Dave
That song of the gypsy Dave

Yes, I've forsaken my husband dear
To go with the gypsy Davy
And I've forsaken my mansion high
But not my blue-eyed baby
Not my blue-eyed babe

She smiled to leave her husband dear
And go with the Gypsy Davy
But the tears come a-trickling down her cheeks
To think of the blue-eyed baby
Pretty little blue-eyed babe

Take off, take off your buckskin gloves
Made of Spanish leather
Give to me your lily-white hair
And we'll ride home together
We'll ride home again

No, I won't take off my buckskin gloves
They're made of Spanish leather
I'll go my way from day to day
And sing with the Gypsy Davy
That song of the Gypsy Davy
That song of the Gypsy Davy
That song of the Gypsy Dave

You, Jack Gillis and few others had a lasting effect on me too from our time on the Vine. Got 'Vine ripened' so to speak.

Buzz, your song reminded me of a Bob Dylan song, because of the Spanish Leather thing. It's even appropriate for our topic today, cheatin' songs, provided we stipulate that a sailor can cheat with the sea. it's really one of my very favorite songs by one of my favorite groups from North Carolina, Mandolin Orange, covering Dylan's Boots Of Spanish Leather. I know you're behind a firewall and can't see youtube but maybe you can find another path.

Andrew has a unique voice and ,Emily is a gifted musician with a fine voice of her own. It's quite unusual in that they reverse the roles, Andrew sings what most would consider to be the female part and Emily sings the male part. I hope you will all enjoy this and maybe even listen to some of their other songs.

If one thinks Alanis Morissette's response to cheating was harsh then listen with caution to Marianne Faithfull's blistering odd to a cheating bastard.

Marianne Faithfull   Why'd Ya Do It (  Lyric Video )     Notice
Age-restricted video (requested by uploader)

.

Marianne's song is a scorched earth scream caused by the pain of cheating but Harry's two songs about he and his future wife's cheating are kinda of sweet.

Picked a live performance where he leads off with his odd to the cuckold husband then follows that up with the song he wrote about the start of his affair with the mans wife, (soon to be Harry's wife).

My wife and I got to see him back in the late 70's when he played at the State Fair Music Hall in Dallas.  A perfect venue for his show.

The opening act that night was Leo Kottke.

Kottke just sat on his stool in the middle of the stage and played 3 or 4 different guitars with astounding virtuosity.

I remember a six string, twelve string and some amazing slide work.

Leo Kottke - medley

Anyway, at the end of the night we got to meet Harry, shake his hand and get his sig. on a book of his poems.

It was a great night.

Too bad that book has drifted away from me on the eddies of time.

Such a sad loss losing Harry when and in the way that we did.

...............................

Have to go to youtube to see the Marianne Faithful one, totally worth it.

That song sure does convey the combination of both PAIN & ANGER that cheating can bring on.
