AOC one of many hypocritical Democrats on school choice
Democrats, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez aren’t opposed to school choice. They’re opposed to school choice for other people’s children.

When it comes to schools, democrats are the do as I say not as I do party.  They send their kids and grandchildren and others related to them where they think best while trapping poorer kids particularly from minority communities trapped n failing public schools to appease and buy support of the teachers union at the expense of the children.  Such hypocrites.

Democrats such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez aren’t opposed to school choice. They’re opposed to school choice for other people’s children.

Many prominent Democrats kowtow to teachers unions by opposing school choice, which refers to programs that allow parents to choose the school their child attends — a public school, private school, home school or charter school. Study after study has shown that giving parents options has major benefits. Many school choice programs even save taxpayer dollars.

Well-designed programs are a win-win on the policy front, but they’re a threat to teacher unions. Even though charter schools are public schools, they and private schools are much less likely to be unionized. When families can choose the best school for their child, union officials lose money because there are fewer unionized teachers. That means less money to engage in politics, where the overwhelming majority of union dollars support Democrats. As a result, most Democrats vigorously attack school choice.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, is a social media superstar and one of the most well-known democratic socialists in the country. The party’s New York City  platform condemns charter schools as “tools for privatizing education and weakening the power of unionized teachers.” It calls for an end to new charter schools and converting existing charters into traditional public schools. Sen. Bernie Sanders, whom Ms. Ocasio-Cortez endorsed for president,  wants  to ban for-profit charter schools and impose a moratorium on new charter funding.

Before Ms. Ocasio-Cortez got into politics, she had a different perspective. In 2017, she recorded a Facebook Live video while walking down Hunts Point Avenue in the Bronx.

“My goddaughter, I got her into a charter school like maybe a block or two down,” she  said .

She’s not alone. More than 11 percent of public school students in New York City attend charter schools. If Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s comrades succeeded in shutting down charter schools, it would disproportionately affect minority students. According to a  recent report from the Manhattan Institute , 90 percent of these students are Hispanic or African-American. More than 20 percent of black students in New York City attend a charter school, and 10 percent of Hispanic students do.

Ironically, these attacks on charter schools wouldn’t affect many white students. That’s because more than half of the white students in the city attend private schools.

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is hardly alone in her hypocrisy. Sen. Elizabeth Warren opposes school choice but  admitted last year that she sent her son to private schools .

How can you tell school choice works? Look at the schools to which Democrat politicians send their own family members.

school choice from the mouths of most conservatives is subterfuge for taxpayer funding of bible slapper academies.

meh, I don't care if some people send their kids to thumper madrasas to keep them ignorant, but I refuse to subsidize that type of ignorance directly or indirectly, which is exactly what school vouchers for the religious community do. sorry, no tax credits or deductions for religious people that can't comprehend the 1st amendment or a secular gov't. it costs more to be poor in America, it should cost a lot more to be  ignorant as well.

public schools suffer because of the right wing stranglehold in funding them and how they're funded. teachers hold one of the most important professions in America, yet their pay is substandard for the job they do compared to other professions, hence the establishment of teachers unions. AFAIC public education is a national security issue and should be funded as such. testament to that fact is our standing worldwide in educational statistics and our need to import educated professionals from other countries that place more value in education for their children.

some for profit charter schools are just another deceptive money laundering/eventual bankrptcy scam to have taxpayers pay for religious bullshit to be pumped into young minds by science deniers with a glaring lack of critical thinking skills and only driven by greed. most have a problem meeting basic core educational standards.
