Tom Hanks And His Wife Have Coronavirus ; NBA Suspends It's Season After Player On Utah Jazz Tests Positive

And away we go.

Tom Hanks and his wife actress Rita Wilson announced today that they have contracted the coronavirus while in Australia making a movie.

The NBA ended it's season today after a player on the Utah Jazz tested positive for the virus.

In other news, the president ended all travel from Europe to the US except for the UK.  It wasnt immediately clear why the UK is exempt, since they have many cases of the disease there too.

Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are both 63 years old, thus in the danger zone for serious complications.

They surely are getting the best care money can buy.  I hope they will both be okay.

Hanks has type 2 Diabetes which puts him in the danger zone. It will be interesting to see if Hanks can survive. That may turn out to be an inspirational story.

Did the expert mention how much blame the Chinese government gets for this?

They allowed all those flights to take the disease worldwide. That regime is responsible for whatever happens.

In his address, Trump stated that all flights from Europe would be suspended, and that included cargo.  Just now, he tweeted that cargo would not be included in the suspension.  So which is it?

He spoke before he checked with Putin on the cargo suspension. Russia has just braced itself for 16 more years of Putin, so basically he is now the Emperor of Russia.

I would not be surprised if Trump does not follow suit and declare himself the President for life. Or try to anyway. If Putin can do it, why can't Trump dream the same dream. jrSmiley_98_smiley_image.gif

Now that we know that many here were infected from European travels, it is a good idea. A bold one! One that I can depend on from this President.

As for continental European governments - YOU ASSHOLES NEED TO PROTECT YOUR OWN PEOPLE!

Sorry to hear about Tom Hanks and his wife, Rita Wilson. Both really good people and Tom is one of most favorite actors.

The point about stopping cargo seems a bit unclear, but air freight from Europe is minute vs the ocean born traffic.

A bellwether of the economy is the import and export market and the cargo entering and departing US Ports via container, bulk, and tanker vessels.

The Port of LA/LB the busiest port in the US has experienced a 20 downturn in container cargo. This, of course, affects the ocean shipping, trucking, railroad, and warehousing throughout the country. Based on the projections of the shipping industry it is only going to get worse. Layoff are already taking place. Between mid-Feburary and mid-April 41 container vessel sailings have been canceled. to put that in perspective the average container ship has a capacity of around 14,000 containers, multiple that by 41 and you get 574,000 TEU's (containers) that is one hell of a lot of cargo and jobs.

These are just the two ports in Southern California. Other major container ports on the US west coast are Oakland, Portland, Tacoma, and Seattle.

Between the trade war and the coronavirus the industry is sending out red flags.

Speaking of trade wars, seems this guy is pulling a lot of strings....................

At the OPEC summit in Vienna last week, when Russia refused his call to cut oil production as demand dipped due to the global coronavirus outbreak, MBS upped the ante, challenging Moscow and threatening to ramp up Saudi production, triggering the steepest drop in oil prices since the US began bombarding Iraqi troops in Kuwait in 1991.
Saudi's king-in-waiting believes that Russia has been "cheating" on oil production agreements, and after giving them "many chances," according to one source close to the government, has decided that this is the moment to put his foot down.
The prince may not have wanted this confrontation right now -- or may have miscalculated the ability of his brother, the Saudi oil minister, to negotiate for him in Vienna -- but what is clear is that MBS, by default or design, can be a global disruptor.

I'm having a difficult time understanding how Russia will benefit from this. The price of oil has bottomed out and will affect Russia much more than SA who can withstand the price drop. There was a theory that Russia was doing this to destroy the shale industry in the US by driving them out of business. If that happens the big boys (major oil companies) would simply buy them up at bargain basement prices.

Perhaps there is something more to this that I'm not seeing.

There is probably more to it than a lot of people are seeing.

There was a theory that Russia was doing this to destroy the shale industry in the US by driving them out of business.

And with most "best laid plans of mice and men", pissed off SA.

Saudi's king-in-waiting believes that Russia has been "cheating" on oil production agreements, and after giving them "many chances," according to one source close to the government, has decided that this is the moment to put his foot down.

Putin didn't think of the consequences and the source(s) of those consequences and is screwing himself perhaps?

Strange times............................................

Strange times..

Very strange times Jim.

Of course, this move is part of the reason that the markets are tanking. For fuel users like the shipping lines, the upside for them is the price of their bunker fuel which is much lower than a couple of months ago.
