LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Country music group Lady Antebellum on Thursday changed its name to Lady A, saying it regretted its blindspot over the name's association with a time of slavery in the United States. The trio, one of the most successful in country music, said in an open letter that they took the name 14 years ago after the Southern antebellum style home where they took their first photos. "But we are regretful and embarrassed to say that we did not take into account the associations that weigh down this word referring to the period of history before the Civil War, which includes slavery. We are deeply sorry for the hurt this has caused and for anyone who has felt unsafe, unseen or unvalued," the group added. Antebellum is a term used to describe culture in the Southern United States before the American Civil War when slavery was an accepted practice. The group, formed in Nashville in 2006 and best known for hit records like Grammy-winner "Need You Now," said the change was made in response to mass protests over systemic racism in the United States spurred by the death of African-American George

I have to wonder about all these people who thought it was ok to portray this or that with racial connotations three weeks ago, but now they are so moved by the death of one man that they just have to change the name of their music group or stop using certain advertising, or stop using products with negative connotations about racial minorities, or demand that confederate statues and portraits be taken down in the halls of Congress.

Why did it take the death of George Floyd to make Lady Antebellum be concerned about their name?  If the name was problematical it was so a month ago as well.

Now "racism" is the number one trending topic in the country, and millions of people are literally changing their opinions right in front of our eyes and acknowledging that racism has been damaging our country for ....for... well forever (since Columbus landed and exploited and stole from the natives on Hispanolia.)  I guess God does work in mysterious ways.

Antebellum Period - HistoryNet

  • In the South, cotton plantations were very profitable, at least until overplanting leached most of the nutrients from the soil. Advances in processing the fiber, from Eli Whitney’s cotton gin to the development of power looms and the sewing machine, increased demand for cotton to export from the South to England and the mills of New England. Plantation owners were able to obtain large tracts of land for little money, particularly after the Indian Removal Act was passed in 1830. These plantati..

Kowtowing to radicals.

But, it's not really a big deal.   Hell, they've been known and called Lady A for years.   Just changing their legal formal contractual name to their informal most often used name.  Not the first and won't be the last.

Funny thing is....it seems no one called them out on the name. No one except themselves. Record sales must be sliding. jrSmiley_18_smiley_image.gif

Actually, there's a great deal of truth to that.  Like all "artists", they've had their day in the sun and it's starting to set.  That's actually part of the reason Taylor Swift left country and went "pop".  Younger singers were coming along and giving her too much of a challenge.   Over in the "pop" world, she was the fresh not so young, young blood.

Hell, Brookes and Dunn got back together and did a song or two and I think now they've re-retired since their old mojo has gone go-go.

Washington, D.C. is changing its name to King, D.C., and Denzell Washington is following suit - Denzell King.  Washington State will instead change its name to Evers State, to prevent confusion.

Do you know what antebellum means?

antebellum
[ˌan(t)ēˈbeləm]

ADJECTIVE
antebellum (adjective) · ante-bellum (adjective)
occurring or existing before a particular war, especially the American Civil War.
"the conventions of the antebellum South"

They can change their name to placate people if they so choose.

Funny that anyone would dare to criticize them for the actions they often demand.
