Fox News

Fox News star   Tucker Carlson —currently   facing outrage from network colleagues over his racist rhetoric —upped the ante on Monday night, claiming it was “probably illegal” for presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden to prioritize Black women in his running-mate search, while calling those candidates unqualified.

Carlson, whose former head writer was   recently outed as an outspoken racist , kicked off Monday night’s broadcast of his hit primetime show by singling out the women of color whom Biden is reportedly considering as the vice-presidential nominee.

“We’ve taken a closer look at three potential candidates. All of them are said to be on Joe Biden’s shortlist for the job,” Carlson declared, referencing   a previous inflammatory segment . “They are Stacey Abrams, Karen Bass, and Kamala Harris. Now, in a normal year, no mainstream candidate would consider any of these people. All of them would be disqualified without debate.”

The far-right Fox host first described   Rep. Bass   (D-CA) as a “lunatic Fidel Castro acolyte” and an armed revolutionary, referring to   her past praise of the Cuban dictator   and work for a young leftist group during the 1970s. After calling Abrams, a former Georgia state representative and gubernatorial candidate, “delusional” and accusing her of writing “bad porn novels,” Carlson took aim at Sen. Harris (D-CA).

“Kamala Harris, meanwhile, is so transparently transactional that even Democratic primary voters who have a strong stomach found her repulsive,” he exclaimed. “Pretty much no one who knows Kamala Harris likes her.”

Claiming the three women did not represent a “blue ribbon group,” Carlson then grumbled over the Biden campaign’s apparent prioritization of a woman of color to fill out the ticket.

“For what could very well be the most important job on Earth, Biden has decided to hire exclusively on the basis of qualities that are both immutable and completely irrelevant—race and gender,” Carlson huffed. “And that’s it. But wait a second, you ask, isn’t that insulting? Isn’t it wrong? Isn’t it probably illegal?”

“Yes, it is all three of those things,” he continued. “But no one’s pushing back against it so Biden is doing it.”

Carlson then tore into another Black woman whom Biden is reportedly considering, former National Security Adviser Susan Rice. Describing her remarks in the immediate aftermath of the Benghazi terror attacks as “hateful” and “heinous,” the Fox host accused Rice of committing a “moral crime” by initially blaming the embassy attack on an anti-Islamic video.

I miss The Colbert report also.  But Stephen has gone on to bigger and better things!

I saw Jon Stewart a long time ago in Atlantic City.  It was great!  I won some money at the casino beforehand and the drinks were on me.  It was so funny.  I don't know why, but my friend who came to the show with me, yelled out  "Will you bend over?", and Jon said right back "What am I, your puppet?"  It was hilarious.

I agree the candidates considered are all bad choices who would not normally be seriously considered for the job. However, I see nothing wrong with wanting to fill the position with a black woman.

Making the search exclusive to those traits smacks of tokenism. Surely there are capable white women or black men out there as well? Maybe a hispanic? A Native American? There are any number of intersectional boxes that could be checked.

So, it's very limiting, but I don't see why it would be specifically illegal to only consider a black female for the job.

Racist? Sexist? Dumb? Arguably, it's any or all of those things.

But not illegal.

Of course it's racist and sexist.

If you exclude a race from your search, it's racist.  If this were an actual job selection, rather than an "election" by a political party, it would be illegal.   But since the fiction exists that the Party, and not Biden, will choose the VP nominee, it's probably not a Title VII violation, even though in practice Biden simply selects the running mate.

The poor woman who gets chosen. It's will be known  she's only the most qualified female person of color, not the most qualified person.

Of course, if Biden wins, she'll be President within 6 months, so I suppose being President helps with the humiliation of getting a job only because you checked the requisite  diversity boxes.

Donald Trump's ascension to the office of president of the United States has rendered moot any concern about the "qualifications" of any other candidates , now and possibly into the future as well.

We already have the most unqualified and unfit person in history in the office. We can only go up from here.

So Donald Trump justifies racism?

Trump is a red herring when it comes to Biden defining what criteria he's using to select a VP, and when race is  a dominate criteria in making a choice, it's a racist process.

Trump has nothing to do with the Biden's racist /sexist choice. Trump isn't forcing him to be a racist/sexist.

If the President of your local bank announced that he's going to hire the most qualified non-Asian male to be VP, would you be okay with that? Because that's what Biden's doing.

You know nothing about it.  Trump is some conservatives candidate because he is a world-class 'jerk' and no other qualifications are suitable or needed. Stick with what some conservatives know! Biden can choose to announce his interest in political candidate because of the uniqueness of the job of President of the United States.  The person has to be a proper 'fit' for the one of a kind job of VP and the one of a kind duties and responsibilities at the top (no nuance intended).

Trump conservatives do not give a damn about qualifications or suitability for working for the people of the country. Those conservatives simply want to toss crap around and 'big-foot' everything democratically established because its cheap and easy to banter and harass.

If men are excluded from consideration, then YES, the list is limited.

Almost half the population is excluded.

From Biden himself:

post 6.1 (thanks, Jim!)

"Former Vice President  Joe Biden  said Sunday he would pick a woman to be his vice-presidential running mate."
"If I'm elected president, my Cabinet, my administration will look like the country, and I commit that I will, in fact, appoint a, pick a woman to be vice president," Biden said at the CNN-Univision debate in Washington, DC.
Biden continued, "There are a number of women who are qualified to be president tomorrow. I would pick a woman to be my vice president."

Sean, I'm saying that Biden isn't the first presidential candidate to set a one-gender VP precedent.  The list is long, and Trump was a chronological starting point, nothing more nothing less.  If one has agreed with the one-gender short list of previous administrations, then it shouldn't matter if the list is all men, or all women.

ng that Biden isn't the first presidential candidate to set a one-gender VP precedent

Trump had a woman on his short list and never said I'm only picking a white male to be Vice President.

No other candidate in decades to my knowledge  has ever publicly excluded candidates solely based on gender like Biden has.  So what other candidate ever publicly excluded women, or men before starting the search process?

s, then it shouldn't matter if the list is all men, or all women.

It matters if they are on the list only because they are men or women. If all of the best candidates are males or females, so be it. But to start the process by saying I'm only going to consider a woman to be VP is entirely different.

Why the hell would it bother me?

But it is funnier than hell that you think bringing up Trump, after bitching about him for over 3 years, as an acceptable example for Hidin' Biden to follow is a good argument.

So no, it doesn't bother me in the least that no women were on Trump's short list.

Do you think there will come a day when the top 6 or 8 picks for VP will be women? Will that suddenly mean that whoever chooses from that list will be accused of sexism?

Got a name for that woman?  A link would be nice, too.

And Trump didn't have to say 'I'm only picking a white male to be VP.'  He wears his misogyny like a pink pussy hat.

In addition, Joe Biden has been a supporter of women's rights for 30 years.  It makes sense that he would choose a woman, and as long as they are qualified, why not?  As a matter of fact, when one considers the political climate regarding women, a higher qualification bar must be met.  Like Avis used to say, when you're number two, you have to try harder.

Nor should it matter the color of their skin. Trump is White, and he is totally, completely, without question one of the worst, if not the worst, President this country has ever had. And his VP, Pence, is White, and he is undoubtedly one of the most worthless VP's this country has ever had. And the only reason that Trump picked him, is that out of all the candidates, Pence is the only one who could not out shine Trump in a NY second on any subject, under any circumstances, and not add to the gross embarrassment and laughing stock Trump has made of America.

And history will bear that out more than once.

Trump is doing all he can to try to deflect from his own stupidity and arrogance in thinking he knows more than the medical experts, and he had not only put this country in situation where America could totally collapse, but, infecting and killing our citizens unnecessarily, plus lying endlessly to us trying to save his worthless ass.

He can't stand the idea of having to take responsibility of his own actions and the lives of the people, which he swore in his Bible to serve and protect, as well as the Constitution, and it was nothing but one more of his endless lies, as he had not done one day of this term.

I am sure that Trump will insist on being in charge of Hell when he gets there. However, having seen what he has done to America and its people, The Devil will refuse on grounds that Trump is not fit to be in charge of Hell.

The citizens of this country do not deserve this. Trump is so detached from reality that he envisions the virus leaving the United States without a second wave this fall (of its own volition) completing its deadly course. We have become fodder to be purged in 'Trump-fire!'

Trump supporters are accessories to lies. If Trump can ignore the deaths of veterans,' grands,' teens, and wants to feed the children to the virus 'beast' this August, what will he do for 2021's second wave?

What does "probably illegal" mean coming from a (weak, apparently) print journalist like Carlson? Does it mean Tucker does little to insufficient research? That is, supporters of Trump would rather have a "deliverable" each evening that scratches their itching ears rather than hard-cold facts and informed opinion-makings?

Everyone (staying at home) should be calling and querying their congressperson and telling him or her to go to the television networks on a daily basis to denounce President Trump as working deceit with Russia to make their (Covid-19 induced) votes not worth a damn and utterly useless! It's interesting, isn't it?

Our dear "conservatives" (I'm avoiding the Mussolini word) are constantly accusing others of what they are doing or intending to do.

Remember the days when they cried out their fears of "Obama's FEMA shocktroops"? No one ever saw thos, of course... but we definitely did see Trump's ICE shocktroops, in Portland.

Here on NT, there's nothing so dramatic as shocktroops... for the moment... but the same process - accusing opponents of whatever they themselves are doing or planning to do - is very much present.

As President, he has continued on the same path. He has surrounded himself with sycophants, and fired anyone who didn't swear fealty to him, personally.

Objectively, he has moulded his America to his will.

Now he's hearing about possible defeat, so he's doing as he has always done: if he can't win under the current rules, he'll change the rules. False census. Handicapped mail-in voting. Outright voter suppression. Change the date of the election.

He will do anything.

I hate to say this... but there’s a certain logic to the EC. The Fathers understood that "majority rule" needs moderation. The EC was an attempt to avoid excessive power for a small number of high-population states. (Without the EC, a coalition of ten states would have a majority.)

After a couple centuries, it seems safe to say that we could find better means than the EC for tempering the majority. Other countries have done better... but they had the advantage of learning from America's mistakes.

We now have the opposite of the Fathers' worry: minority rule.

Joe stated he will, if given the chance, put a black woman on the Supreme Court. While I understand the politics of stating some matters of interest up front, I do not see the wisdom in announcing so far ahead that critics can choose to 'ham-fist' it at their leisure rather than in desperation. What is happening with the VP spot of late is this. There are 'forces' inside the Democratic Party which want the constituency of black women who vote heavily to be recognized with some real power at the top. Those forces are pressing hard on this one at this time.

Oh, and pay no attention to the negative 'bobs' and 'nancys' that are out and about. Just take what is good and proper from anybody's words and throw the rest in the trash!
