How a biracial woman grew up thinking she was white( Little White Lie)
How a biracial woman grew up thinking she waswhite
Updated by Jene Desmond-Harris on January 22, 2015,
When Lacey Schwartz was accepted to Georgetown University, the school saw her photo and passed her name along to the black student association. The organization contacted her.
The only issue: Schwartz had grown up in a Jewish household in Woodstock New York, and had always despite occasional questions about the source of her brown skin and curly hair identified as white.
She confronted her mother, who revealed that Schwartz' biological father was actually a black man. The 18-year-old began a quest to reconcile her newly discovered identity with the way she was raised, all while navigating sensitivities around what had been a family secret.
Little White Lie, which was released in New York, LA, and San Francisco last yearand is set to air on PBS in March is her documentary about that journey. Watch the trailer here:

This is a story of today, there are many people with mixed races, just a must see movie...
That's fine Badfish, the story I posted was not to criticize anyone, its just a story...I know there are some narrow minded people, but I thought this was just a story worth telling..
I think this has happened a lot-- even historically. I have read of white people being taken off the streets and sold as slaves, all because they were even 1/8 black. Of course, that was years ago... A lot of us so-called "white folk" probably have some black blood in us, if we look hard enough.
I bet her journey is epic, and I look forward to seeing this on TV.
Thanks for posting!
Thank you Dowser, I know a few of us on NT could appreciate this story, I love it, of course I live in New York and this is just normal for me, I believe it will be showing on PBS in March, I can imagine how fascinating her story is..thanks Dowser..
I'm looking forward to it!
Funny, how people make issues out of things that aren't...
BF, Lacey Schwartz has been blessed with an opportunity to experience life as white, Jewish, and black. It's nothing short of an incredible gift, and I'm looking forward to seeing the film, thanks toCM's heads-up. Serious-up every now and then, will you?
That said, Mr. Van Winkle could bust a move, yeah?
Word to your mother.
Incorrect.
The Jerk was born a poor black child.
This is the opposite.
Actually, she's got the double whammy.
A Jew AND black.
Twice the fodder for hatred.
Thank you Sister Mary, Lacey Schwartz did not experience any racial issues until she applied to college, how society puts us in boxes, from the trailer, she has lived a wonderful rich life, adored by family members from the home movies we see, so yes, I think she has been blessed..
Yes, there is a lesson, best schools, she is blessed...I'm looking forward this on PBS in March..
Good thing she's from New York, it makes a difference, actually, in today's society, I don't think it matters...
Don't think so, she still has her family...
Good article CM. I'm looking forward to seeing it as well.
Good schooling did wonders for Obama's career . Is it possible she will be the 1st black woman president ?
She's a Jew.
Forget it.
Being Jewish , she is expected to be well educated . So that would not work as an asset.Good point ...
She's young, by the time she is ready to run for President, the bigots will be gone and the more educated will not consider her Jewish/Black heritage...
the bigots will be gone
You need to sip that drink.
Stop gulping and refilling so quickly.
CM,
I am so looking forward to seeing this documentary.
Most people don't know that Peggy Lipton (from the Mod Squad), a Jew, married Quincy Jones and Rashida Jones is a black Jew. You can watch about Rashida's trip on finding out about her Jewish roots here.
Most people don't look at me and think Indian. When they look at how dark my daughters are, they don't think of them as white (they are actually dark because their dad's family is Hungarian). Going to school in Baltimore, most of their classmates have informed them that they are not white, which is amusing to them. Who knew?
White is in the eye of the beholder.
In today's society mixed races are not unusual at all. I think most people have become accustomed to seeing it. In fact I'll be glad when we're all off white, so to speak. I'm about tired of the racist argument. I wonder what it will be then, I'm blacker than you or I'm whiter than you.
She's a pretty young lady.
There is a great childrens short story called "Tusk Tusk". Sadly we humans want to make this delineations. If it wasn't about color, it would be about big ears v little ears.
After all, birds of a feather...
Thank you Perrie, I am also looking forward to the documentary:
No, I do not think Six feels guilty about anything, just looking at the time he posted and another post he made just ranting, he must have been tired and just said something, I bet this morning he'll be refreshed and feisty as ever..
You are absolutely correct Robert G. They really don't want diversity. I on the other hand don't care, but the ones who are claim they want diversity really only want the diversity as they call it if they are collective in that diversity.
I'm tired of racism being used for everything.
