U.S. sues N.Y. company that workers say made them pray, say 'I love you'
http://news.msn.com/us/us-sues-ny-company-that-workers-say-made-them-pray-say-i-love-you NEW YORK (Reuters) - A federal agency sued a New York customer service provider on Wednesday after allegations the company forced employees to pray, thank God for their jobs and say "I love you" to managers and colleagues at work, and fired those who protested. The Long Island-based United Health Programs of America and its parent company, Cost Containment Group, required workers to practice a spiritual belief system called Onionhead while on the job, in violation of their civil and religious rights, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said in the complaint. The company fired several employees who refused to adhere to the Onionhead doctrine, which was created by the aunt of the company's owner, the complaint said.In one case, an IT project and account manager was disciplined after she complained to management in 2010 that she was Catholic and did not want to participate in the spiritual activities, according to the complaint.A month after she complained, the employee was removed from her office and relocated to an open customer service area, while a large statue of a Buddha was placed in her former office. She protested to the owner that the move amounted to a demotion and was fired, the complaint said."While religious or spiritual practices may indeed provide comfort and community to many people, it is critical to be aware that federal law prohibits employers from coercing employees to take part in them," Sunu Chandy, senior trial attorney at the commission, said in a statement. The commission is seeking back pay with interest and unspecified damages for the fired employees, and an injunction against the company from further religious requirements.Representatives for United Health Programs of America and Cost Containment Group could not be immediately reached for comment.

Dear Friend Hal: This is our day to agree with one another. Two for two.

People go to work to earn a living. They don't show up to be used to promulgate and advance an ideology, orbehavior not relevant to the performance of their job, and contrary to their beliefs and freedomsof speech. Therearereasons for First Amendment Freedoms of Belief, and expression.

Those who wish to misuse the powers of employment to violate the law are free, here in the USA to move to totalitarian nations where the powers that be get to decide what you will believe, and how you will express yourself. Good luck with that.

Peace, Abundant Blessings and non-coercive Cost Containments.

Enoch.

Dear Friend Hal: Be sure to buy a ticket with a money back guarantee, in case it isn't a winner.
I have been stung for not doing this.
Peace, Blessings and Abundant Winnings.
Enoch.

I am unfamiliar with this particular sect, but IMO, 'onionhead' is what you would call a movement when you don't want anyone to take it seriously.

You don't see the difference between "our gizmos are the best", and "tell your coworker, Fernando, (whom you loathe) that you love him."? Or "thank your god (whom you don't believe in) that you have this job, or you're fired."?

Lies of widely varying degree. Tell your employees to hype your shitty product - I'm fine with that. That's advertising, an nobody should let advertising influence their important decisions. That's on the consumer. Telling someone to pray to god is no different than telling someone to pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster. You still unclear on this?

Generally, it's not a government concern, I agree with you there. The private sector shouldn't have much problem rubbing this business out of existence, economically speaking. But can we just let gods and deities be taboo for workplace environments, please? It pretty much has similar results to that time you got grounded for punching your little brother in the face, because he was sticking his finger in your face, chanting "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you, ..." It's an unwanted, unprovoked, and illogical gesture.

I'm lost - what person are you talking about? You must be referring to a politically motivated situation. I'm talking about religion. Based on typical American politics, the two may seem the same, but only one has a secular component.

As an atheist, I don't mind being told Merry Christmas at all. Yeah, it's got the word 'Christ' in it, but everybody knows Christmas is really about Santa Claus, reindeer, elves and mass consumerism. Enforcing a rule to not say Merry Christmas is silly, and not much different than the subject of this article.
