New group for Trek fans

Sponsored by group STAR TREK

STAR TREK

Just a quick FYI.

If you're a fan of any Star Trek show or film, then be sure to pop over to the new group and join.

If you'd like to migrate any Trek-related articles or seeds over, then please feel free to do so, though I just discovered that migrating seems to wipe out an article's up votes for some reason.

Anyway, there it is.

Live long and prosper.

I've hunted down and edited several options for the group logo, which I'll show in a post later on (after we've picked up some members). I'll ask for any that group members find (or make) as well, and then we can vote and choose the group logo together.

Sound good?

Me too. It was hard to choose. That's why I figured we could vote on it a little later on.

By the way, do you know why the migrate function drops article votes to zero? Not that it matters much, I'm just curious. Also, Sandy tried to join but the system wouldn't add her.

Perrie had an idea in the last Picard discussion you might like: Wait for the season to finish airing, get the free trial, binge the show, and then cancel before you're billed.

The episode discussions here will have all occurred by then, though (except for the last one, maybe).

It's a little slow to develop and I found a couple characters super annoying, but it does get better as it goes along and has what I honestly believe is the greatest final space battle scene I have ever seen in the last episode.

I wonder if All Access or Netflix has that? I might have to see if I can watch some of it one of these days. It's probably pretty nostalgic. The original actors did the voice work, right?

The series came out in 1973 I believe. And yes, most of the original cast did reprise their roles, with the notable exception of Walter Koenig. But he did write an episode. It also featured some guest stars from TOS, like Roger Carmel as Harry Mudd. James Doohan did a lot of other character voices like aliens the Enterprise crew encountered.

Groups are going to overlap.   SFFG logically covers the entire spectrum of SF.   This group does a deep dive on one extremely popular, long-running SF genre.   I think Star Trek has earned the right to have its own group.  jrSmiley_82_smiley_image.gif      The content is staggering and the supporters are many ... covering over 50 years of this stuff.

It's rare that I watch any network TV anymore.  Used to love Mike & Molly and Modern Family, but after so many seasons, some shows just aren't that great any more.

I need to get rid of cable and keep my internet connection, I have Hulu, Netflix, and the Disney+ streaming services so it's such a waste of money to spend so much on cable every month.

I loved QL but hated Enterprise.  I still have a major thing for Scott.  I went to a QL convention and got to meet him and AL.  The lady next to me went into labor but refused to go the hospital until Scot or Al rubbed her stomach for luck.   Both are die hard environmentalists so I sent the show an idea that I thought was pure gold.  Put out a CD of the out takes and mistakes calling it Quantum Bleep.  The money generated by the sales of the CD could have gone to their favorite causes.  They never even got back to me.

After seeing all these abilities and tech ideas of Star Trek in the other advanced series (the Borg being the apex) trying to fill in the past was slow to me. Again, that theme song makes me cry to today!

Ahhhh....I see. I have never been impressed by tech in any of the series. It's all about the story line and character development for me. That's what I loved about Enterprise...they developed the characters more than I saw them do on any of the other Star Trek series. And I have to admit I like story arcs. I didn't see that in TOS or TNG. I never watched the others so I can't say.

Picard's assimilation and recovery were the closest thing to an arc in TNG, and it was all of what, 3 episodes?

I both like story arcs and see problems with them.  Story arcs were why I didn't get into DS9 - I was in college and missed a few episodes because my college's cable system didn't show DS9, and when I could watch it, I was lost.  Today, though, I think story arcs work fine.  With streaming services, the only reason to miss an episode is lack of interest.  And I think story arcs aid character development.

Hi TG! Yes, I love character development too! Along with rich content and vision. I thought Enterprise would be risky for me, because it attempted to look back at the beginning of the Star Trek plot-line and then go where? "Captain Kirk" already dominated and was the face of early interstellar space travel. That being known, after creating plasma realms (Voyager), where else could the human mind go to advance the story forward? It will be interesting to me to eventually learn if Picard is advancing the future (growth) vertical timeline or floating along on a horizontal timeline.

I understand space force.   The pattern was established by our use of armed forces (and air force, naval force).   I guess they wanted to be conventional.   The space part is also understandable.   Cosmos Force seems awkward (and rather arrogant).   Space really is the proper English word.

What they could have done is buck the precedent and just come up with a name.   Following the pattern of Army (armed forces) and Navy (naval forces) would yield Spacey.   LOL   Not gonna happen.   So they would need something totally unique in etymology — a new pattern entirely.   Something maybe like 'Exterra' (derived from:  'Extraterrestrial Explorers').

Space force, however, is much easier to comprehend and probably would play better in general.

The Air Force already had a department called Space Command that was responsible for satellites and other things space related.

Space Command was shut down several years ago for some reason (I don't know why). All they needed to do was reactivate it internally. An entirely separate branch of the military seems completely unnecessary at this time (not to mention more expensive), and the name Space Force is just plain campy (as Gordy rightly put it). It's Duck Dodgers in the 24th and a half century stuff, to my ear at least. I'm visualizing Daffy Duck in a cape... Spathe Forth!

Aaahhhh, spoilers!! Lol

By the way, am I the only one in thinking that Picard's 2 Romulan housekeepers are 2 of the more awesome characters in the series? And that's just my impression from the 1st episode.

Exactly. I wouldn't mind an episode dealing with their backstory.

I wanna know where she got her Irish accent.

To be fair, if humans can have different accents, why can't Romulans?

True.  Maybe the universal translator allows one to choose an accent?

Possible. Although, it was only shown to produce translations only. The speaker's voice was unaltered. So it stands to reason any accent is also of the speaker.

When the show was still in production, a friend of mine worked in one of the big book chains in L.A., Sir Patrick was shopping there.  He was paying for his books but got sidetracked by fans.  My friend didn't want to have to re ring him up so she got on the PA and yelled "Captain Picard to the bridge!"  That got his attention and a smile from him.  He finished paying and went outside to talk with his fans.  Although this is not ST related, if you like Sir Patrick as an actor, he did a great remake of The Canterville Ghost.  It is worth watching and was better than the original IMO.
