I was born in the '40's - my Dad was a career military officer and a strict disciplinarian (he had been raised on a farm in SD and his parents were German and Dutch). Mom was born on a farm in MS, 17 brothers and sisters, pulled cotton for $.25 a day, and was a strict disciplinarian. I don't know, maybe it was the European/Native American culture of respect, honor, integrity, truth and strength of beliefs that caused most of the kids I grew up with to mirror our parent's behavior of, basically, treating others as you would want to be treated.
There was no "silver platter" for kids between '46 and '65 - at least not in my world.
It was a metaphor of the possibilities they handed us, no there were no free gifts. They set the table for those of us born between 46-65, we broke the dishes.
