Here is an interesting read about the history of solar technology. The book is available for download from the Internet Archive in various formats, although, I suggest the PDF format as most readable. BTW, this not a technical book and is an easy read. I recommend it.
One of the most important solar technologies ever developed was clear window glass. Solar energy is not new or particularly novel.
