I truly feel for those who have suffered so much the last couple of years from the devastating winter weather and flooding. It not only impacts the areas at the immediate time, but, for months, or even years afterward.

The severe flooding in the farm belts of our country will impact the farmers and companies in those areas, causing food prices to rise substantially, seriously affecting people in all parts of the country.

Please be safe and I hope this is the last one for this year. (smile)

i am a die hard Minnesotan and this has been a bit to much for me. And you are correct the weather has put a lot of farmers into emergency mode due to flooding and then refreezing of land they want to get out and work with. We should be out of the woods and getting on with spring this week but this last snow storm really didn't help.

But MN NICE has me feeling positive!!

It was normal for snow to happen in Ontario from mid November to mid April.  We expected a 5 month winter.  However, more recently it had not been so extreme.

Sure was this year Buzz.  It usually gets cold but we seldom get wind chills of 35 below.  I think that one set a record.

Sparty, do you mean that the snow over the last two days came as a surprise to you???  Yep, we've had it down here by Lansing too, although not as much as up in TC.  Don't know yet whether the schools will close tomorrow.  Not a lot of snow but the roads do have some nasty ice on them.  Could make for an interesting drive to get the grandkids in if they are open.  But, a surprise???  Except for four years living in Long Beach and points west when in the Navy, I've lived in Michigan for my whole 70 years and I can't recall a single year when the winter didn't try for a last fling at us in late March or early April (sometimes as late as June).  In fact, that's about the only thing about the weather around here that you can predict.  Around here, a weatherman has to study meteorology with a minor in magic to be able to predict the weather more than ten minutes in advance.

It sure doesn't.  The beauty of these late ones is that we know that they'll go away soon (maybe even as early as today, the temperature is getting up there).

This part is off topic as it can get but it's just too good to hold back.  This is my youngest grandson.  Look at what he no longer has.

First baby tooth gone.  He's a big kid now.  I've told him that, as the new ones come in, he'd better ease off on the candy and take care of them, cause he only gets one set of grown up teeth.

Yeah, its not abnormal to get snow this late.   I've played ball in snowstorms as late as early May.

But that doesn't make it feel any better.  jrSmiley_9_smiley_image.gif

One of the things i like about Northern Michigan is we usually get four very distinctive seasons.   I like that.

The only real downside is winters can get a little long.   Like what happened yesterday.

Are you sure there are four "very distinctive" seasons in northern Michigan.  I know one can be very hot and so humid at times it can make an Arizonian feel like they are drowning and another cold and snowy where I might put on the thermals for a few days.  But the other two you can hardly tell the difference, we just call them the mud seasons.

I'm with you, I love northern Michigan.  We're at little south and on the sunrise side from you.  At times my wife wants to move south, but then spring, summer, and fall come along and she changes her mind.

We had 5" of heavy wet snow yesterday, but with the sun it will mostly be gone today and we will have another week of mud.

On mud, grass might actually work (maybe).

We're at little south and on the sunrise side from you.

BC, that would be somewhere between the Grayling and Alpena areas (which is as close as I would try to guess).  Really beautiful spots.  I'm about halfway between Grand Rapids and Lansing.  Farming area; not as spectacularly beautiful as farther north but pretty, especially now when the calves are dropping and the crops are starting to grow.

For all of the folks out there who may be thinking of Michigan for a vacation, you couldn't find anywhere with more scenic beauty than this State.  If you prefer hotels or motels, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is a match for anything in the country, just about anything in the world.  For those into camping, I can only recommend my personal favorite, the Otsego Lake State Park near the town of Gaylord.  There are many others that are great but that's the one we've been going to since I was about 10.

Last year I was thinking of writing up a travelogue of the UP, but things got busy.  Maybe I should start working on it again.

Isn't hunting season the only one that counts? jrSmiley_91_smiley_image.gif

One year my friend and I decided to take off up north at the last minute and we forgot that it was hunting season.  We drove from Lansing over to Lake Michigan up through Ludington to Traverse City back down 75 to Lansing in one day because we couldn't find a room.

Yep, that would be the fifth one and certainly the most important.  Many of the high schools, some in urban areas, are closed on November 15th (opening day of deer season).  Half of the students and a third of the faculty are off "sick" on that day.

Good thx ..... typical spring snowstorm for this part of the country.   No snow on the ground prior to the storm, 3-4 inches after the storm, all melted the next day.   I was raking leaves prior to the storm and got driven off by it.   Back at it after things dry out ..... spring chores
