Arizona man dies after taking chloroquine for coronavirus
On Saturday, Trump tweeted about the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, saying it had “a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.”

trmp didn't go all Jim Jones and force people to self medicate with this drug, but people hang on to every word he says as if he were The Great Messiah come to save us all. All they has to hear or read is the comment I quoted above.

(Reuters) - An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after they ingested chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs that have been named by President Trump as potential treatments for coronavirus infection.

The couple, in their 60s, experienced immediate distress after swallowing the drug, an additive used at aquariums to clean fish tanks, according to Banner Health Hospital in Phoenix.

Chloroquine phosphate shares the same active ingredient as malaria drugs that President Trump has touted as possibly effective against COVID-19, the potentially life-threatening disease caused by the coronavirus.

On Saturday, Trump tweeted about the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, saying it had “a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.”

The nation’s top infectious disease expert, Anthony Fauci, played down that claim, saying the therapy must be tested to assure its safety and efficacy.

“Chloroquine, a malaria medication, should not be ingested to treat or prevent this virus,” Banner Health said in a statement on Monday.

The new coronavirus, which causes the highly contagious COVID-19 respiratory illness, emerged in December in Wuhan, China and has spread throughout the world.

There are currently no vaccines or treatments approved for the disease, but researchers are studying existing treatments and working on experimental ones. At the moment, most patients can only receive supportive care.

“Given the uncertainty around COVID-19, we understand that people are trying to find new ways to prevent or treat this virus, but self-medicating is not the way to do so,” said Dr. Daniel Brooks, Banner Poison and Drug Information Center medical director.

rooks urged the medical community to not prescribe chloroquine medication to any non-hospitalized patients.

“The last thing that we want right now is to inundate our emergency departments with patients who believe they found a vague and risky solution that could potentially jeopardize their health.”

According to Gupta & Fauci the small trial sample from France was disappointing.

The acceptable cloroquinine not only failed in 6 cases;

of those 6

one dropped out of the trial after experiencing vision side effects.

5 worsened and went to ICU

where one died.

25% failure rate is not a miracle cure.

And like Fauci said, without a large sample and control groups

who knows if the others were helped or just cured at the same rate they would have without any intervention...

What is to discuss? Two Darwin Award winners took something that is not even close to being a medication and suffered for it.

An Arizona man has died and his wife is in critical condition after they ingested chloroquine phosphate - an aquarium cleaning product similar to drugs that have been named by President Trump as potential treatments for coronavirus infection.

An aquarium cleaning product? Really? What other chemicals did the cleaning product have that are not in hydroxychloroquine? Ever think those other chemicals helped to put the couple in hospital?  Nah, couldn't be.

The media and the left are seeking to cast the full blame on Trump of course.

Just another day in the TDS driven US.

That's the point I'm trying to get across. This is not about left wing or right wing. Reuters reported it and I thought everyone pretty much respected them.

He loves the poorly educated. However he should be held accountable for not allowing Doctors to exclusively speak on medications. When Trump speaks, his blind worshipers take it to heart and he is not a doctor. No one should recommend drugs or medications unless they have the medical degree to back it up. It follows that his followers will misinterpret the drug name and take anything that comes close to what they heard, or thought they heard him say.

It does??? Why does that follow? And if it does naturally follow, why haven't millions of people swallowed this chemical?

Because with trump supporters we grade on a curve. You have to understand that there are trump supporters that believe that trump has never ever told a lie. When you throw in a president that at fox news put it, "a strange relationship with the truth", when he makes medical comments of which he has NO clue about, people will die. It's that simple. Yes, these two were idiots for listening to trump, but some of the onus must fall on trump for making blatantly false statements that are designed to protect his image. To put it another way, trump didn't pull the trigger, but he sure as hell loaded the gun and handed it to these two people.

What blatantly false statement did he make? He referenced a set of patients who had been treated and said the results were "encouraging." That's an opinion, but those patients are real. Medical researchers are studying the medicine. That's also true. He said it may work or it may not work.

He said doctors have been prescribing it for a long time. That's also true. In the almost total absence of effective treatments, it's perfectly reasonable to be optimistic about this one.

He didn't say "swallow this shit if you get sick" or "this shit will cure you" or anything like that.

Lots of common medicines, by the way, have really awful side effects, including death sometimes. Only an absolute moron would do what these people did.

Trump should never be making medical comments.  Precisely because of what happened in Arizona.  Trump said he likes the uneducated.  Those people believed they were taking the same thing Trump was touting.  They listened to Trump.  They didn't bother listening to the doctors.  Because, you know, he knows more than they do.  Now the gop is literally going to kill their base and have nobody left to vote for them because the rest of us listen to the experts and plan to live and vote this shit out.

Well then neither should any of us.

Those people believed they were taking the same thing Trump was touting.

What does "touting" mean? He never said it would cure the virus. He said he was encouraged by the report. He said it could be a game changer. He didn't say it was. If you're going to blame people's actions on the words Trump says, you should at least be honest about what he said.

They listened to Trump.

That is clearly not true because he never said anybody should be taking the stuff.

Please show us all how he has prevented any doctors from discussing medications.

No one should recommend drugs or medications unless they have the medical degree to back it up.

Saying that certain drugs or treatments show promise is a far, far cry from recommending them.

There is a reason we rely upon doctors and pharmacists with years of training and experience to provide us with appropriate medications. There is a reason we use professional chemists and biologists to develop and test our medications and why government oversight of same is employed.

In my long, long experience in aquatics, I have never heard of a Chloroquine Phosphate (CP) "fish tank cleaner".

CP is strictly used for killing parasitic infections of fish stock, primarily from fresh and salt water ick.

So I guess if you were twisting words, you could say that it "cleans" or "sterilizes" a quarantine or hospital tank.

CP is strictly a medicine and like all things, if not used in moderation, deadly.

Chloroquine Phosphate, Quinine Hydrochloride, & Quinine Sulfate are anti-malarial drugs that are also often very effective for single cell ecto-parasites in fish, especially Cryptocaryon, Oodinium, Brooklynella, and occasionally Ichthyophthirius Multifilis and flukes in freshwater

Quinine drugs work by causing a pH elevation in intracellular organelles of parasites, this is thought to disrupt the intracellular transport of membrane components and macromolecules, and phospholipase activity leading to cellular failure of these parasites.

Chloroquine was developed from Methylene Blue (also used starting in 1891 as an anti-malarial drug) & Quinine Sulfate in 1934. The formula of Chloroquine & Methylene Blue is also similar (MB: C16H18ClN3S / Chloroquine: C18H26ClN3).

In marine aquariums, Chloroquine Phosphate is generally the better choice over Quinine Sulfate. Chloroquine Phosphate is more effective from my experience (but also more easily and fatally overdosed). When combined in a synergistic combination with Pyrimethamine, as in the product "AAP Marex", it is even more effective for treatment of Oodinium as well as other Ectoparasites and Flukes (Pyrimethamine is generally used to treat serious parasite infections [toxoplasmosis] of the body).

Chloroquine Phospate is a drug that degrades quickly in water and must be pure to be effective, with most aquatic sources are not 99% pure.
With this in mind be mindful of the discount aquarium product seller placebo product "New Life Spectrum's Ick Shield Pellets", even assuming properly soaked with pharmaceutical grade 99% pure Chloroquine Phosphate (which is doubtful), this product simply cannot work because Chloroquine Phosphate has only been proven to successfully target the free swimming stage of EXTERNAL parasites. Which is why you must dose the powder in a hospital tank. There is no proof it is effective on trophonts feeding on the fish. Even if food soaking were somehow effective on preventing trophonts from attaching, you'd have to be sure each & every one of your fish ate it for 72 consecutive days.
Bottom line, AVOID this product.

The above referenced from this article:
Aquarium Medications Part Two; Quinine

This combination found in AAP Marex works more quickly than chemical treatments such as copper since it immediately acts on the parasite, including in gill filaments, which copper and many other chemical treatments only act on free swimming stages of many Ectoparasites.
This synergistic Chloroquine Phosphate/Pyrimethamine combination is the fastest acting treatment I have ever used for Oodinium, although I have often found a follow up treatment with Copper or keeping the main aquarium without fish for 4 weeks will improve long term results (as copper seems to have more long term permanent killing power).
This combination of Chloroquine Phosphate/Pyrimethamine is also an excellent treatment for gill flukes in freshwater and can generally be safely combined with Praziquantel for severe cases.

There is no telling how much these sad sacks took.

A wild ass guess would be 2 tablets per hundred pounds which is the equivalent of 10 gallons of water and may or may not be safe at that level but 2 tablets per 10 gallons is common.

Btw it says right on the bottle, not for human consumption...
