Joe Biden: Hey, Forget What I Said about China Earlier
“China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man . . . They’re not bad folks, folks . . . they’re not competition for us” and “No other nation can catch us, including China. I got criticized for saying that.”

Joe Biden   now believes  that “We need to get tough with China. China poses a serious challenge to us, and in some areas a real threat.”

That’s nice. That’s also the   opposite of what he said last month , when he declared, “China is going to eat our lunch? Come on, man . . . They’re not bad folks, folks . . . they’re not competition for us” and “No other nation can catch us, including China. I got criticized for saying that.”

This marks the second major policy reversal from Biden in a week, after suddenly deciding he could no longer support the Hyde amendment. I suspect that these reversals will be treated more or less like Barack Obama’s opposition to gay marriage until May 9, 2012: quickly forgotten to the point where reminding anyone about the previous positions is seen as sort of weird, rude, or obsessive. Everyone will choose to forget that Biden’s previous comments made concern about China sound like ridiculous paranoia.

Perhaps Biden got a long-delayed briefing about China’s hostile activities, or perhaps his campaign warned him that his previous all-is-well stance on China was a political liability. But voters should be forgiven for wondering about how seriously Biden holds his current position. If Biden was a China hawk in the Obama administration, he hid it well.

Biden will argue today that whatever Trump wants to achieve with China, he’s pursuing the wrong methods.

“While Trump is tweeting, China is making massive investments in technologies of the future. While Trump is name-calling, China is building roads, bridges, and high-speed rail. While Trump is pursuing a damaging and erratic trade war, without any real strategy, China is positioning itself to lead the world in renewable energy. While Trump is attacking our friends, China is pressing its advantage all over the world.

Trump may well be using ineffective or sub-optimal methods to deal with the   serious challenge and in some areas, a real threat ”  that China presents. But up until very recently, Joe Biden was among those assuring us that China wasn’t a serious challenge or threat.

I do not think that at this moment Biden knows what he means … he has been a candidate for president in name only - he has name recognition and is 'all things anti Trump'..  Trump is doing it the wrong way, but Biden offers no clue what the right way might be, kind of thing .. that's it, so now he is swimming freestyle trying to figure out what the 'progressive way of doing things' actually is …

When he should be running a campaign the Joe Biden way, address issues and speaking his mind … I really would like to support Biden - but at this rate .. not sure he will make it to the general …  I think It Is ME is correct .. Joe needs to 'unchain' himself...

P.s...  watched a program on Pakistan yesterday .. China has major Solar energy investments in Pakistan …. hundreds of acres of panels, working side by side with Pakistanis, the chef on the job site makes Chinese and Pakistan cuisine for each meal.  China and Russia both now have seemingly strong foot hold in the Middle East ….

Point well taken. He would be strong in the general, but trying to out left the left might compromise his chances.

That is how I see it Vic .. 'we' know Biden for the most part, and that is the man that should be running for president - not a anti Trump pretend progressive .. his competition would love to kill his candidacy one paper cut at a time, and flip flopping will def cut him!

I'm an independent - and to be honest, regardless of Biden's policies, he is simply too old for me to consider him a viable candidate.  As are Sanders and Trump.

They are all in the over 70 club aren't they?  I just want to let that sink in for a bit - there are people older than me! That being said, have you noticed the schedule the President has been able to maintain? Last week in London and Normandy, now in Iowa. He's everywhere. Where does Trump get the energy?

Diet Coke has lots of caffeine!

Not that sitting on a private plane requires much energy, or being chauffeured around.  Note that unlike all the other world leaders, he always elects to ride in a golf cart instead of walking anywhere.  Which isn't a good thing, considering his age and dietary habits.  (Plus he thinks people are born with a finite amount of energy and that getting any exercise depletes that energy - very bizarre viewpoint, and totally inaccurate.  Exercise is necessary to maintain one's health and it concerns me that he doesn't ever get any).

I just want to let that sink in for a bit - there are people older than me!

When my mom finally retired as a chaplain, she said she was realizing that the majority of her ... patients? not sure what you call people a chaplain ministers to ... were younger than she was!

I don't think we should have an age cap on running for office, since some people keep their mental acuity at an older age, but most people's cognitive skills slow down with age.  As does their ability to "learn new tricks" and adapt to change.  So for me, it's definitely a negative factor when considering who to vote for.

Has he finally switched to Diet Coke? That may be a first step!

There is only so much exercise that a busy executive can get. I think the much younger, Obama got about an hour in the morning (and ya, that's the best time) and he made it a priority!

Which isn't a good thing, considering his age and dietary habits.

Tell me about it. I can't get away with that.

Exercise is necessary to maintain one's health and it concerns me that he doesn't ever get any).

After 55 it's really a necessity!

That's all true. Timing and instincts are reduced and as you say cognitive skills slow down with age, BUT there is that thing called wisdom!  The informed decisions made later in life are solid or should be. Looking back at my youth, I'm amazed I lived this long.

Yes, but a President needs to be able to adapt to change and learn new things.

For women, more like 50 - menopause wreaks havoc with the metabolism.

Actually, diet sodas have been proven to be just as bad for you as regular soda.  I'm so fortunate that I don't like soda.  I actually like ice water the best - besides white wine, of course.

But never loose his principles

And their hormones go wild!

My daughter told me that a few years ago

I used to love it, but once I gave it up I lost all craving for it.   White wine?  With me it's always Chianti or Rum & Coke at days end.

Okay, everybody, let's get the terminology correct, shall we?

Biden is a Democrat.

Therefore, Biden has never, ever, ever flip-flopped on any issue.

When a Democrat does the same thing that is called flip-flopping when a Republican does it, it is termed "evolving".

Poor old Joe--being forced ever leftward.

yes he is. And I think it's going to make the general election much more entertaining.  While the Democrats continue to force everybody in the primary to keep moving leftward they have to know that once they move into the general they need to move somewhat back to center. How many of the left will that move piss off so much they just stay home next November?
