Summing up the Summit
Last week the President left for what was perhaps the most consequential trip of his Presidency. The 2019 G20 Summit was the fourteenth meeting of what is supposedly 20 key economies (the EU counting as one). This year the event was held in Osaka Japan on the 28th and 29th of June. The topics ranged from the global economy to the environment.
Nineteen of the G20 members pledged their commitment to the “full implementation” of the Paris Agreement. The US was the only member not included. Maybe the nineteen others will now be able to catch up to the US.
At first glance the President seemed to be flaunting his prerogative. First he had a friendly meeting with the Saudi prince, Prince Mohammed, praising him for opening up Saudi Arabia. Later the President said he asked the Crown Prince abut the murder of Jamal Khashoggi, one of the Prince's harshest critics. The President said “He’s very angry about it,” he said. “He’s very unhappy about it.” That put the US media in an ugly mood to start with, then came another meeting with Putin. As usual a reporter asked the President to openly call out the Russian leader for election meddling. The President evidently felt that if they could troll him, he could troll them. “Yes, of course I will,” he said, turning to Putin. “Don’t meddle in the election, President.” Then to rub a little salt in their wounds the President said to Putin “Get rid of them. Fake news is a great term, isn't it? You don’t have this problem in Russia, but we do.”. ......Putin then said (in English) "We also have"!
I am sure that sensitive issues such as Iran and Venezuela were discussed but there was that initial moment of Trump vs the media.
The more daunting agenda came with China. The President and Xi Jinping were able to agree to halt new trade tariffs for 90 days to allow for talks.
"The US says China agreed to "purchase a not yet agreed upon, but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other products from the United States to reduce the trade imbalance between our two countries".
Both sides also pledged to "immediately begin negotiations on structural changes with respect to forced technology transfer, intellectual property protection, non-tariff barriers, cyber intrusions and cyber theft", the White House says.
President Trump said earlier this year he wanted to stop the "unfair transfers of American technology and intellectual property to China".
According to the US, China has also signalled it will allow a tie-up between two major semiconductor manufacturers which Chinese regulators have been blocking.
The White House statement said China was "open to approving the previously unapproved Qualcomm-NXP deal".

Then came the unexpected final act. Donald Trump would travel to South Korea and walk across the DMZ to meet with Kim Jong Un. President Trump became the only sitting President to set foot on the soil of North Korea. The two leaders then agreed to resume talks within the coming weeks.
It has been 4 months since President Trump walked out of the Hanoi meeting. Perhaps this time the working level negotiators can get a verifiable deal on paper that will set up a plan for the de-Nuking of North Korea. The agreement most likely would take a year. The actual de-Nuking might take a decade! Maybe they could formally end the Korean War. It remains to be seen. We have come a long way from early 2017, when we were on the brink of war. In the meantime the President has reminded everyone - the sanctions will continue.
Before heading back to the US, the President made a stop at Osan Air Base, South Korea.
"You have a presence like no other, like no others. So, as President, I have no greater honor than to serve as Commander-in-Chief of the greatest fighting force on the face of the Earth, the United States military."

Those '90 days' blew past Vic. MORE sanctions were imposed by both sides since then.

Your liberal talking points are duly noted. Environmentalism was not a priority of the President's at the G20 summit. If that is what you want to discuss, there are many other places to discuss it.
Trump is succeeding , with about 35-40% of American adults, in turning the US presidency into a reality tv show. Lately almost everything he does seemed to be based on getting it on tv.

No, just looking to see if anyone else had been there. I know that the NT member USA1 who is no longer active on NT was most likely there. We spent time together (with our wives) in Kaifeng, Zhengzhou and Luoyang (all former Dynasty capitals). As well there are a few other members of NT who have been in China with whom I have had discussions about places and events there. Just wondered if there are any more.

I didn't know what nazca lines were - had to look it up, and yes, it is either coincidental or interesting that one points directly to the Forbidden City, which is also known as the Palace Museum.
Yes, your neck would sure as hell get sore here. I have said on some of my photo-essays of China that you should never forget to look up - the ceilings are magnificent, and here is an example of the carvings under the eaves of a building in Kaifeng.

The first two summits were disastrous failures, this one will be no different. I admire the effort, but trump is slow to catch on, there is a reason other world leaders have not tried to negotiate with NK, they know it's pointless. Lil kim wanted recognition on the world stage, trump gave it to him and at the same time, Lil kim played trump like a fiddle, giving up nothing, going back on his word and resuming his nuke program. What better way than offering up a third failed summit.

In New Talks, U.S. May Settle for a Nuclear Freeze by North Korea
Since Trump began his love affair with Kim, who has gained what? Kim has gained worldwide recognition, something NK leaders have sought. He's got all the photo ops he needs to show his repressed people how important he is in the world. Meanwhile his nuke program goes on. Since all the world knows Trumps ego, they speak directly to it, no deep discussions. Trump's invite to meed Kim sounded like a boy in jr. high, FFS. Trump creates chaos and then tries to take credit when it dies down. What exactly has he accomplished with NK's nukes? Besides making Kim into a bigger player than he ever dreamed.

The other option to sanctions & diplomacy is what?
Trump doesn't give a rats ass about Korea, or whether or not they have nukes. He needed a "foreign policy achievement" to brag about after he took office and he thought North Korea could fit the bill. They rarely give news conferences or interviews, so there wouldnt be much out there to contradict Trump's spin.
The only think NK has done in response to Trump is stop testing missiles. This could simply mean that they already have missiles that can reach what they want to reach. They already have something like 40 or 50 workable nukes, from what I have read, they really dont need more than that for a deterrent.
So what is all this about, since it will never end with NK surrendering its nukes? A freeze on new weapons? We are going through all this dog and pony show just to get back to where things were at on the day Trump took office?
Then it was a great choice, since the outgoing President told him it would be his greatest problem as North Korea threatened all it's neighbors, as well as and in particular the US.

Which is a good thing since a good deal of them were going into the Sea of Japan. They also have stopped threatening everyone, released 3 American political prisoners and returned the remains of US military personnel from the Korean War. Maybe establishing a change in the attitude of North Korea, so that it can at least partake in the civilized world. What is interesting is that you seem to be against everything & anything this President has done on the issue. If there was a need for criticism it should have gone to his predecessors.
