Baghdad Rocket Attack kills Iranian MIlitary Leaders including Gen Qassim Soleimani, reports say
President Trump, who on Tuesday night vowed that the situation "will not be a Benghazi" -- a pointed reference to the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya on the Obama administration's watch, ordered deployment of about 750 U.S. soldiers to the Middle East. The embassy attack, one of the worst in recent memory, followed deadly U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters of the Iran-backed group, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the airstrikes were retaliation...

All thanks to our President for being involved in and approving this attack against top Iranian terrorist leadership.  The man responsible for the killing of hundreds of Americans is now dead.

S E E D E D   C O N T E N T

At least three rockets were fired at  Baghdad  International Airport Friday killing at least seven people, including Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force, according to multiple reports early Friday.

Soleimani  is the military mastermind whom Secretary of State  Mike Pompeo  had deemed equally as dangerous as  Islamic State  leader  Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi , who was killed in a strike by U.S.-led forces in October.

Soleimani was the long-running leader of the elite intelligence wing called Quds Force – which itself has been a designated terror group since 2007, and is estimated to be 20,000 strong. Considered one of the most powerful men in Iran, he was routinely referred to as the “shadow commander” or “spymaster.”

"Soleimani is our leader" had been photographed spray-painted on windows by Iran-backed militiamen at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad.

The strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, three Iraqi officials told The Associated Press. Iraqi TV reported the deaths as well.

Local reporters had suggested that pro-Iran military leaders may have been targeted, but officials have not yet confirmed all of the dead and who may have been behind the attack. An official with an Iran-backed paramilitary group known as the Popular Mobilization Forces told The Associated Press one of the victims was its airport protocol officer, identifying him as Mohammed Reda.

Iraq ’s Security Media Cell, which released information regarding Iraqi security, said the three Katyusha rockets landed near the cargo hall.

Iraqi security also said two cars were on fire.

The nighttime attack occurred amid tensions with the U.S. after an  Iran -backed militia attacked the U.S. Embassy in  Baghdad , which was targeted Tuesday by angry mobs who were protesting recent U.S. airstrikes.

The two-day siege outside of the U.S. Embassy in  Baghdad  came to an end Wednesday afternoon after dozens of pro-Iran militiamen and their supporters withdrew from the compound.

The crisis started early Tuesday, when, in an orchestrated assault, hundreds of protesters stormed the embassy compound, one of the most heavily fortified U.S. diplomatic missions in the world.

President Trump , who on Tuesday night vowed that  the situation "will not be a Benghazi"  -- a pointed reference to the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Libya on the Obama administration's watch, ordered deployment of about 750 U.S. soldiers to the  Middle East .

The  embassy attack , one of the worst in recent memory, followed deadly  U.S. airstrikes on Sunday that killed 25 fighters  of the Iran-backed group, the Kataeb Hezbollah. The U.S. military said the airstrikes were retaliation for last week's killing of  an American contractor in a rocket attack on an Iraqi military base , which the U.S. blamed on the militia.

Secretary of Defense  Mark Esper  reacted on Thursday to the  U.S. Embassy attack in Iraq  earlier this week, saying that it's time for  Iran  to start "acting like a normal country.”

“We are there in  Iraq  working with our Iraqi partners to ensure the enduring defeat of  ISIS ,” Esper said on “ America’s Newsroom ” on Thursday.

“Through the president's direction, we were able to physically defeat the caliphate that remains physically defeated, if you will," he added. "And now our aim is to deter further Iranian bad behavior that has been going on now for over 40 years. It's time that Iran started acting like a normal country.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

When it comes to Iran, this administration has time and time again chosen rash provocation over any coherent strategy. I fear tonight’s escalation may be no different.

My first thought is with the men and women serving our country in the Middle East and around the globe. https://t.co/eBPJHMiS3C

— Senator Tom Carper (@SenatorCarper) January 3, 2020

The justification for the assasination is to “deter future Iranian attacks”.

One reason we don’t generally assasinate foreign political officials is the belief that such action will get more, not less, Americans killed.

That should be our real, pressing and grave worry tonight.

— Chris Murphy (@ChrisMurphyCT) January 3, 2020

There is no question that Qasem Soleimani was an enemy of the United States.  I feel no sadness at the news of his death. But I have serious concerns about this President’s execution of a potential act of war without authorization of Congress. https://t.co/B2ZLYikIzh

— Rep. Andy Levin (@RepAndyLevin) January 3, 2020

Trump’s apparent assassination of Soleimani is a massive, deliberate, and dangerous escalation of conflict with Iran. The President just put the lives of every person in the region – U.S. service members and civilians – at immediate risk.

We need de-escalation now. https://t.co/oAenBUsvFl

— Ed Markey (@SenMarkey) January 3, 2020

Trump Admin owes a full explanation of airstrike reports—all the facts—to Congress&the American people. The present authorizations for use of military force in no way cover starting a possible new war. This step could bring the most consequential military confrontation in decades

— Richard Blumenthal (@SenBlumenthal)  January 3, 2020

Are the Democrats all on crack? WTF?

Not one damn peep out these assholes during Obama's 8 years of his NATO war with Libya; putting troops back into Iraq to save an Iraqi government that is loyal to Iran; sending troops to train "moderate" Sunnis and Kurds in Syria; along with massive airstrikes in that country; and not forgetting his greatly expanded extra judicial drone killings, which included two US citizens w/o any trial.

If Bush Jr hadn't tried our hand at failed nation building; and kept his father's and Clinton's containment plan in effect. And, if Obama hadn't reinserted US troops back into Iraq, w/o permission from Congress might I add, then we wouldn't be having this damn conversation to begin with.

If we are going to have US troops and personnel in Iraq we damn well better protect them. Killing the head of a terrorist group that is know to be coordinating strikes against US personnel in Iraq is a good thing. Leave it to the fucking Democrats to side with terrorists from Iran!

We still have troops in Syria. They are holding the northern Syria oil fields. We are still conducting air strikes.

As for the Syrian Kurds- they quickly latched onto the Syrian government alliance. They are being protected by Syrian, Russian, and Iranian troops.

Sorry if Obama's and Hillary's misbegotten plan of removing Assad failed. It was doomed to failure the second Syria invited Russia, China, and Iran into the country.

Oh, and our troops in Syria are all there illegally. The Syrian government has requested they leave several times.

If Turkey were wiping out the Syrian Kurds the MSM would be all over Trump about it. It would be headline news every night.

What, are you sorry there was no Kurdish massacre? Or, that Trump was right? Of course he capitulated to US intelligence agencies, military, and the state department and kept a limited amount of US troops in Syria to conduct operations against ISIS/ISIL. The only thing that has changed in Syria is our footprint, which lowered the exposure of US forces to attack from having to hold so much territory.

John - you continue to show all of us that you really don't have a grasp on how governments interact nor protect each other.

Here - maybe you can respond - intelligently - to this info -

There were ten times more air strikes in the covert war on terror during President Barack Obama’s presidency than under his predecessor, George W. Bush.

Obama  embraced the US drone programme , overseeing more strikes in his first year than Bush carried out during his entire presidency. A total of 563 strikes, largely by drones, targeted Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen during Obama’s two terms, compared to 57 strikes under Bush. Between 384 and 807 civilians were killed in those countries, according to reports logged by the Bureau.

That figure does not include deaths in active battlefields including Afghanistan – where US air attacks have shot up since Obama withdrew the majority of his troops at the end of 2014. The country has since come under frequent US bombardment, in an unreported war that saw 1,337 weapons dropped last year alone – a 40% rise on 2015 .

https://www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2017-01-17/obamas-covert-drone-war-in-numbers-ten-times-more-strikes-than-bush

And guess what John - Congress DID NOT AUTHORIZE Obama's air strikes.  So, I wonder why, all of a sudden, they start screaming.  Oh Yeah - they need "another" Article of Impeachment and, if they keep screaming, they actually thing they'll get one???  Bullshyte.

The Democrats don't need to scream.  All they need do is have another round of secret hearings in a basement room, put some finger paint to paper and viola, they have the articles, then hold a sham vote in the full house and they then have their next formal impeachment.

As to JR.   If he has no complaint about Trump on an hourly basis, he likely feels his entire day has gone unfilled.  It's sad really to watch an adult have such temper tantrums.

We bombed them and killed 25 for that:

US bombs pro-Iran militant group in Iraq, Syria in retaliation for rocket attack

The U.S. attack - the largest yet targeting an Iraqi state-sanctioned militia - and the calls for retaliation, represent a new escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran playing out in the Middle East that could threaten U.S. interests in the region.

The calls for revenge in Baghdad came a day after U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said Washington had carried out military strikes targeting the Iranian-backed Iraqi militia it had blamed for a rocket attack that killed an American contractor in Iraq last week.

I've always worried about the troops not just when Trump is president and I think I can make a political point or two. This fuck was one of people responsible killing our troops during the Iraq war I bet they are dancing a jig over at EOD today.

I think the next target should be to knock out all of their nuclear facilities. We have the bombers and specialized bombs for that task.

The strike may encourage future Iranian attacks.

As opposed to all the other ones?

We are now facing a possible war with Iran.

Maybe we should just send them another 150 billion cash brought in on pallets? It worked for the shit stain in chief obama.

I worry about our troops in the area

Of course you do, but keeping them in Syria you don't care so much. Do you see the hypocricy? Probably not......But Trump.

They money Obama returned to Iran was their money.

They sent us that money (before their revolution) to pay for military supplies (mainly aircraft) that we refused to deliver.

The World Court determined that the money should be returned so Obama used it to convince Iran to back off of its nuclear program.

Trump shredded the Iranian agreement so they are once again working hard on developing nukes.

Obama returned their money.

That was Obama's explanation. If so it was the government of the Shah's money.

They agreed to limit their nuclear program.

At a tremendous cost. Sanctions were lifted, Russia was allowed to do just about anything so they would help on the deal and we delivered everything up front for their word.

The inspectors said they were complying with the agreement that Trump shredded.

Trump wouldn't have been able to shred it if it was a formal treaty. Why didn't Obama get congressional approval?

Great job!

A badly needed one. Thank you Mr President.

At least three rockets were fired at  Baghdad  International Airport Friday killing at least seven people, including Iranian Gen. Qassim Soleimani, the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' elite Quds Force, according to multiple reports early Friday.

I wonder if our personnel in the area feel safer tonight (I'm glad I'm not in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad).

Maybe.

Might feel a little better, knowing that the guy approving and planning and sometimes funding attacks resulting in hundreds of American deaths is gone for good.

I think most folks know the risk of being stationed in the Middle East. Do you think we will do nothing to protect our people?

I hope so. I know I would be encouraged knowing that we had just killed a critical enemy leader. If our military is going to be cringing in fear and anxiety every time we hurt the enemy, then what are we doing in the world?

"In April 2019, the State Department announced Iran was responsible for killing 608 U.S. troops during the Iraq War. Soleimani was the head of the Iranian and Iranian-backed forces carrying out those operations killing American troops. According to the State Department, 17 percent of all deaths of U.S. personnel in Iraq from 2003 to 2011 were orchestrated by Soleimani.

As recently as 2015, a travel ban and United Nations Security Council resolutions had barred Soleimani from leaving Iran.

Friday's Baghdad strike also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, a source told Fox News. In all, at least seven people were killed and at least three rockets were fired, officials told The Associated Press. An official with the Popular Mobilization Forces said its airport protocol officer, Mohammed Reda, also died."

There were thoughts for a rescue, nonetheless. Unfortunately, Hillary & Co were more worried about offending the locals and the Marines were ordered to change from military uniforms to civilian clothing and back numerous times:

"But, one commander told the committee that as they were readying themselves to deploy they kept having to change in and out of their uniforms four times.

The military never deployed to Benghazi."

I was in Iraq. Can't speak for those there now, but I can tell you I feel pretty good about what President Trump did. If I were there now I'd feel pretty encouraged that the guy who had killed so many of us is now part of the atmosphere. I'd feel pretty good that someone finally did something about it. If I were there right now I might not feel safer but I wouldn't feel less safe, as my brothers and sisters were getting killed already anyway. And as for retaliation, well, bring it on. We never were cowering in our bunkers, hoping they'd just leave us alone. They can go ahead and "retaliate", as if they were just minding their own business, innocently killing our troops. Hopefully, if they do "retaliate", Trump let's us bomb the stuffing out of Iranian military bases.

Ask yourself whether the personnel in the Solomon Islands in April of 1943 felt safer after the P-38's took out Admiral Yamamoto. Answer:  It wasn't their job to feel safe; it was their job to kick some Japanese ass no matter how they felt about it.

Another great point many are neglecting to consider.

When Soleimani travels, he brings a good number of his trusted "lieutenants" with him.  They operate as co-planners and operation directors.

Now the scramble is on to find viable replacements for not only Soleimani, but his lieutenants as well and that might create a power struggle within the Quds force as well as the Iranian military in general.
