The   Ukrainian jet that crashed   after taking off from a Tehran airport may have been mistakenly shot down by an Iranian missile, a London-based global information firm says.

"Photographs purportedly taken near the site of the crash and circulated on social media appear to show the guidance section of an SA-15 Gauntlet short-range, surface to air missile, which landed in a nearby garden," the firm IHS Markit said in its report.

The firm said it could not confirm the authenticity of the photos but "assesses them to be credible."

Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 crashed hours after Iran launched   a ballistic missile attack on Iraqi bases   housing U.S. soldiers. All 176 passengers and crew of the Boeing 737-800 were killed.

Iran plane crash: Did Boeing 737-800 go down after engine failure or something else?

President Trump said Thursday he found the crash suspicious and that "somebody could have made a mistake on the other side."

In Ukraine, Oleksiy Danilov, secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, said that investigators were looking into claims that parts of a Russian-made, surface-to-air missile stocked by Iran had been found near the crash site.

In a preliminary crash report issued Thursday, Iran's civil aviation authority said the plane's crew never made a radio call for help and were trying to turn back to the airport when the plane went down. The plane apparently suffered engine failure, Iranian officials said.

IHS Markit says publicly available air traffic data is "not consistent" with Iran's claim. The firm says flight data shows a normal ascent until the plane disappears at 8,000 feet.

"This is consistent with a catastrophic incident onboard the aircraft," the report said.

The report adds that "A pilot of an airliner that took off from Tehran airport shortly after UIA Flight 752 told an IHS Markit source that he watched the aircraft take off and then explode in midair."

Newsweek, citing two Pentagon officials, said the plane was struck by an anti-aircraft missile. The officials told Newsweek the strike was likely accidental.

Iran authorities say they have recovered the audio and data recorders from the flight, but say they won't allow Boeing or U.S. aviation officials access to the black boxes.

The Iranian explanation immediately drew skepticism from some aviation experts.

"There was no way for Iran to know it was engine failure,” said Mary Schiavo, a former U.S. Department of Transportation inspector general and a pilot.

"That is the wreckage of an explosion in the air,” she said. “Something happened to blow that plane out of the air. Statistically speaking, that’s a missile or a bomb."

More and more it looks like the Iranians shot down Flight PS752.

Why did they even let that plane take off on such a night?

Why did they put my plane in the air where the first air strike that changed Desert Shield to Desert Storm was occurring, forcing us to land in Italy?   We may never have the answers because no one will admit to basically fucking up.

And BTW you were the first to suspect this was a plane shot down.

It was not a conspiracy theory! I'm sure my friend will admit it!

Yeah, I remember reading some shit about that.

Like sane folks already couldn't surmise that it was Iran which shot that plane down.

I do have one question, though.

If Trump is Putin's puppet--as so many love to claim--why would he engage an ALLY of Russia ?

That doesn't make sense, but so often they don't anyways.

Foreign policy makes strange bedfellows. We needed the Soviet Union to win the Second World War so they were allies. In the new world order formed after that war we became enemies, just as Hitler predicted. We were enemies that somehow co-existed and from time to time cooperated. Obama needed his Iran deal and wanted Russia to help, therefore he turned a blind eye to everything Russia and Iran did. In comes Trump under a cloud of allegations about "Russia", but it was Trump who took a firm stand with both Iran and Russia.

Vic, what I was saying, which I thought you understood at the time, but evidently not, is that the plane was not shot down accidentally by a missile that was being sent towards the Americans in Iraq.    Dont try and misrepresent what was said.

All the evidence is that Iran shot the Ukraine plane down...intentionally or not. What is telling is this

Iran authorities say they have recovered the audio and data recorders from the flight, but say they won't allow Boeing or U.S. aviation officials access to the black boxes.

In February 2007, Biden said of then candidate Obama:   “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy. I mean, that’s a storybook, man.”

I can't wait to see him on the stage facing President Trump!

Yes, it is quite likely that an Iranian anti-aircraft battery downed the Ukrainian airliner.  It's important to keep in mind that wasn't intentional.  Tensions were high in expectation of strikes by the United States.  The fog of war and human frailties cause tragedies; that's a natural part of warfare.

It would be easy and, perhaps, satisfying to blame the ground crew of an anti-aircraft battery.  But that only avoids asking the question that should be asked: why did the Iranian government allow commercial flights to resume so soon?  There should have been a ground stop until the United States' intentions were known.

In military terms, this is a failure of leadership.

I think we can all agree on that.

In military terms, this is a failure of leadership.

They can by all the sophisticated weapons they want, they simply don't have the military expertise. Which is another reason why the President is right when he says that he will never allow them to have nuclear weapons.

I don't think it is military expertise that is missing.  Iran seems quite capable of tactical planning and execution.  What seems to be missing is strategic leadership.  Iran hasn't moved beyond political leadership to develop geopolitical leadership.  Iran is still stuck in tit for tat threats and retaliation.

Iran possessing nuclear weapons isn't the problem  Iran hasn't demonstrated a willingness or capability to safe guard those weapons.  It is the safe guards that's the difference between Israel possessing nuclear weapons and Iran possessing nuclear weapons.

I have to disagree on that one. The Iranian regime is no different than a terrorist organization. I know there would be proliferation, but nuclear status would give them hegemony over the entire middle east and beyond.

I contend that Iran would use nuclear weapons to pursue political tactical objectives.  Iran wouldn't use nuclear weapons to pursue geopolitical strategy.

In my view, Iran sees nuclear weapons as a political threat rather than a geopolitical bargaining chip for diplomacy.  Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons for political expediency just as Iran's retaliatory missile attack satisfied political expediency.  Iran did not obtain anything of strategic value from its retaliation for the killing of Soleimani.

In geopolitics the value of nuclear bombs isn't as weapons.  Our nuclear arsenal is worthless as a battlefield weapon system.

All good questions and observations.

We know that US & Russian satellites can detect the launching of the larger missiles but not something handheld like a Stinger especially

with background light pollution from the airport and surrounding villages.

If anyone had detected a launch it would probably be all over the news already.

The SA-15 is a Russian design on a mobile tracked launcher.

It remains to be seen if the Iranians are competent or honest enough to admit what happened.

Hiss is another fine example of why certain laws should not have a statute of limitations.

When Al-Awlaki was charged with US passport fraud a second time,

the case was ultimately dropped because the statute had expired.

Who knows how many lives would have been saved if we had prosecuted him in 1993, 1996

or again in 2000 or 2002?

You would think that with all the lessons learned from multiple military's shooting down commercial airliners over the years that all countries would have SOP's to prevent it from occurring.  Sad

In Conclusion:

We now know that the Iran regime is as incompetent as it is brutal. Strike one is allowing flights from a war zone on a night when Iran is expecting a US military response. Strike 2 is Iranian military leaders not having complete control & coordination of the sophisticated missile defense system they bought from Russia.
