Pelosi must climb down

Pelosi must climb down
"I'm not holding them indefinitely," Pelosi said during her weekly press conference. "I'll send them over when I'm ready, and that will probably be soon."

Leave a comment to auto-join group We the People

We the People

The Speaker has put herself out on a limb possibly via some ill conceived advice from leftist law professor Lawrence Tribe. The whole notion of coercing the leader of the US Senate to conform to a trial dictated by the Speaker of the House was almost doomed to failure from the start. What did Pelosi want? The Speaker has always said that she wants more details about the Senate trial before she sends the articles over, including potentially viewing the Senate resolution.

"Tell us the rules so we know what they are and can then appoint managers and transmit articles to the Senate! "

Now the Senate is ready to pass a measure which would change Senate rules to allow the charges to be dismissed without a trial if they are not delivered within 25 days. You may recall that the House impeached the President on Dec 18. Even Senate democrats are calling for Pelosi to give up on the standoff. Her moderate House members must be squirming in their seats, the longer this goes on.

Senate Leader McConnell has instructed Senate members to "stick around" next weekend. That would mean that either Pelosi turns over the articles of impeachment within the next 7 days or the Senate will take action. It leaves Pelosi in a terrible position. Either she backs down and hands over the articles within 7 days (losing face with all those adoring progressives) or the Senate will no longer extend the courtesy of waiting for the "Speaker of the House" to hand them over. Pelosi's gambit for a pre-trial agreement to call new witnesses has effectively been trumped by Mitch McConnell.

My guess is that Pelosi will blink & hand over the Articles within 7 days.

The peoples business continues:

Nancy Pelosi confirmed Democrats will introduce a resolution next week that would transmit the articles to the Senate and appoint the handful of Democratic lawmakers who will act as prosecutors in the trial.

All the ridiculous speculation that she wouldn't send them has been pretty hilarious. The vast majority of Americans, by over 10 million, voted for Democrats in the 2018 election which gave Democrats a large majority in the house and the peoples business has been happening with hundreds of bills being passed by the house only to die on the pyre of partisanship in the senate as Moscow Mitch refuses to even allow a vote on nearly all of them.

"Democrats in the House have been passing bills at a rapid clip; as of November 15, the House has passed nearly 400 bills, not including resolutions."

The "people" (aka the majority of Americans) disapprove of this President. The "people" never wanted him in the first place. The "people" overwhelmingly elected Democrats in 2018 to counter what they saw as an inept, chaotic, unhinged, uninformed, serially bankrupt, adulterous, ignorant and offensive reality TV show host who had won the 2016 electoral college with the help of a murderous dictator who illegally hacked private US citizen emails and publicly released them to embarrass Trumps opponents and spent $1.25 million a month on fake news ads targeted at those swing State voters that their stolen State voter databases had informed them were vulnerable to specific propaganda and misinformation campaigns. The "people" agree that Trumps attempts to pressure Ukraine to announce public investigations against his most likely political opponent warranted impeachment.

The "people" will show dirty dishonest Donald the door this November, and if he doesn't quickly exit it the "people" will kick his flabby ass through it.

It is difficult to put any stock in results from either of the sources you quoted. According to fact checking sites that I looked up, both vox.com and the Daily Beast are blatantly far left progressive liberally bent. As such, except to progressive leftist liberals, that puts their findings in question and can hardly be considered objective and non biased. Just my honest opinion.

You would think they'd be over that after three years but alas they are not and still can't accept a legally elected POTUS.   This must be the longest "temper tantrum" ever.

The "people" overwhelmingly elected Democrats in 2018

More disingenuous, TDS driven propaganda.   Dems won seats in the House in 2018 because as history shows, that is what typically happens in a midterm.   The off party to the elected POTUS party usually makes inroads in congress.   Of course you know that and simply spread this propaganda in the hopes that it will stick with someone new here.

Ain't gonna happen Dulay but you gotta try i suppose.

Ah yes, when you can't refute the contents, attack the messengers.

Are you denying the fact that Pelosi sent a letter notifying house democrats that the articles would be sent to the senate next week?

“I have asked Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler to be prepared to bring to the Floor next week a resolution to appoint managers and transmit articles of impeachment to the Senate,” Pelosi wrote to House colleagues."

And here's the headline from Fox:

Pelosi: House will move to transmit impeachment articles next week

It really is difficult to have a debate with someone when they can't agree on facts, they can't agree on reality, they can't even agree on the definitions of words. I'm just thankful that those in such obvious denial and delusion are the minority and that the majority clearly disapprove of this President and believe his actions taken in regards to pressuring Ukraine for his own personal political gain was, in fact, an impeachable offense.

I am so glad you wrote this. This is Golden.  That someone would steer this discussion into the gutter against one individual is astounding enough. A pox on that one's house. I so appreciate the balance you have dispersed.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has and is doing all she can for the cause of getting to the truth. If a set of tired old republican senators want to pretend that truth doesn't matter when it comes to a republican leading the nation, then democrats and the DNC would be wise to make Mitch McConnell "famous" by this fall as Trump's bosom buddy in campaign ads. Wrap the Majority Leader and Trump so tightly together that both politically suffocate from breathing the other's carbon dioxide.

Do it Nancy. Do it DNC. Do it Mike B. Do it Lincoln Project.

One of the most annoying traits of MSNBC news anchors no matter which one it is, is the near incessant childlike questioning, "Are we there yet?" technique that is deployed against democrats at every turn of a significant fork in the political dialogue or crucial house leadership activity.

One can only hope that once The Speaker of the House turns over the impeachment documents to the Senate, MSNBC anchors will turn their incessant childlike questioning, "Why Mitch—why?" technique on and demand straightforward and complete answers from the Majority Leader. MSNBC could ask Mitch why crime pays dividends and benefits in Washington, D.C.?

You would think they'd be over that after three years but alas they are not and still can't accept a legally elected POTUS.

When Trump 'Ballbrites' continue to lie about the will of the "people", it's important to remind them that the "people" (which most consider to be a reference to the majority) did not elect this POS POTUS.

Dems won seats in the House in 2018 because as history shows, that is what typically happens in a midterm.

Right, politics has nothing to do with it, people just naturally choose to vote overwhelmingly, by more than 10 million, for whichever party isn't in the white house. You keep telling yourself whatever you need to keep your delusion alive.

Of course you know that and simply spread this propaganda

It's not propaganda, it's a fact and you know it. You're not fooling anyone, Trump and his boot lickers are the only ones shoveling propaganda hoping some of it sticks, desperate to keep this president in office and out of jail which is where he's heading as soon as he loses the election. His status as an unindicted coconspirator will quickly change to indicted coconspirator as soon as he no longer has the protections afforded him by the office of President.

Think so?

Yes.

I see the "resist movement" shooting itself in the foot on almost a daily basis in congress, here and in the mass media so good luck winning in 2020.

I'm surprised any of Trumps supporters can see anything with their craniums so deep in Trumps voluminous colon. Are you sure that's the Democrats shooting themselves in the foot and not just a half digested cheeseburger working it's way through Trumps system?

At least you'll feel good about it for another 10 months or so.

As embarrassing as Trump is, patriotic Americans loyal to the constitution who don't buy into any of the dishonest populist propaganda spread by the right-wing lie machines will be just fine even if dirty Donald wins another electoral victory, which of course is his only possible path to victory, he will never get the majority of Americans to support him. So even if we have to suffer through the embarrassment of the serial adulterer and admitted sexual predator for another 4 years, we'll be okay. Every time the right swings the pendulum further into their bizarro world of right wing propaganda, hate, xenophobia, homophobia, islamophobia and misogyny, it just creates more momentum to swing back to normalcy, diversity and equality. America is getting more progressive, not less, no matter how much the right-wing religious conservative naysayers gnash their teeth and beat their chests in impotent fury.

They knew/know their case is weak and doomed because of that fact in the Senate. That's why she held off. Waiting for more "gotchas" to materialize to "help" with their case. So, when the Senate kills this ridiculous bullshit distraction, they may try to do it all over again. To quote someone elsewhere, "I hate party over country types". And the Dems have been that since they got cocky in 2006

" Way out on a tree limb"

There are external political consequences of a longer delay. Five Senate Democrats are running for the party’s presidential nomination and a trial would mostly keep them pinned down in Washington serving as jurors in the weeks leading up to the Iowa caucuses on Feb. 3. Three more nominating contests follow in quick succession.
One of those candidates, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, said staying in the capital could deal a “big, big blow” to his struggling campaign.

I'm a fan of our system and even though it takes a long time to get anything done, and it doesn't always get it right (IMO), I am generally content to let the system do its thing. That means letting citizens have information and make their own decisions. It means resolving disputes in the courts. And it also means the House does its thing and the Senate does its thing.

Ironically, people deeply involved in the system, don't trust it. People like Pelosi, who live for the power, don't trust the people, and can't let the Senate do its job, because they might not like the outcome.

Pelosi is a shining example of why we need a system of checks and balances. I think she believes that she can somehow exert her power and control what the Senate does, but she is finding out that she has zero influence in that chamber. The only reason this goes on day after day is because she can't accept it.

See now this is a sterling example of why your politics are confusing, in my opinion. You wrote, "Pelosi is a shining example of why we need a system of checks and balances." When you have heard the Speaker state she is is defending House Impeachment Articles against a confusion caused by Majority Leader of the Senate Mitch McConnell who said this

     "Impeachment is a political decision."

First off, Mitch is lying on the House when he calls Impeachment a partisan exercise there, because the Speaker of the House tried her best not to need the activity; but Trump persisted in his malfeasance until he had caused a violation or set of trespasses which no honest House Leader could ignore.

Second off, Mitch McConnell is old enough to know that the founding fathers did not intend a requirement for presiding Speakers and Majority Leaders to weigh impeachment lop-sidedly based on politics alone. That would be the founders stacking the deck from inception and causing impeachment to be a ludicrous exercise.  Mitch McConnell is a lying, cheating, sad-sack disappointment as Majority Leader who only wants what he can exploit out of the Senate.

I reckon he will go down in conservative land as some legendary figure— and he is betting on that. However, history overall will not be kind to a miserly thief who raped the system in order to make a name for himself and selfishly take everything for his party.

Lastly, a second official constitutionally ordered "solemn oath taking of impartially" is worthless in the Senate when you hear the Majority Leader announce out loud to senate members - "Impeachment is a political decision." Translation. He and senate members have his permission to be partisan as usual. jThe second oath is not worth its salt!

And, Taco! you approve of this.

One more thing: Speaker Pelosi and the House Chairs were definitely not under any obligation to turn a serious and grave impeachment hearing into a circus affair by allowing extraneous witnesses and unrelated matters into the investigative (fact-finding) hearings and proceedings.

It's all true. You know how we know this? Chuck Schumer said the very same thing in 1998/99.

Schumer said in 1999 Senate wasn't like a jury box and was 'susceptible to the whims of politics'

Chuck Schumer was brand new to the Senate after being freshly elected in 98 and he campaigned on his promise to vote acquit President Clinton. Imagine that! He campaigned on it!

Schumer was elected to the Senate in 1998 after saying during his campaign that a vote for him would be a vote to not impeach Clinton.

So don't get the idea that something new and outrageous is happening when Mitch McConnell says impeachment is political and he's not an impartial juror. Twas ever thus!

Democrats have become an excuse searching for justification.  Nancy Pelosi didn't want to go down the rabbit hole of impeachment and resisted for quite a while.  But Pelosi's leadership has been challenged and she lost.  Pelosi is only trying to hold onto the position (and privileges) of Speaker.  Nancy Pelosi has become a figurehead.

What has transpired shows that the Corey Booker approach of spittle-spewing outrage isn't an effective means of political accomplishment.  Stirring up public fears and outrage doesn't translate into political support.  That's the problem with empty suit politics.

Democrats have been rocked back on their heels.  Democrats have certainly stoked public outrage with their political stunts.  But Democrats haven't offered any alternatives.

I contend that Democrats have become too conventional.  Democrats carefully crafted an unconventional approach to governing decades ago that has now become the status quo.  Lyndon Johnson was the Democrat's version of Donald Trump.  The Democratic hegemony of unconventional social politics introduced by Johnson has metamorphosed  into a conventional wisdom that must be protected at any cost.  Sixty per cent of the country's population was not alive when Lyndon Johnson began the great social crusade that was unconventional for its day.  Democrats are no longer revolutionaries with bold new ideas; social politics is today's status quo that has trapped Democrats in their own conventional wisdom.
