What to watch for in tonight's DNC Debate.
“This is not okay, alright?” the worker said, to which Biden responded, “Don’t tell me that, pal, or I’m going to go out and slap you in the face.”

We the People

Tonight the 11th Democratic primary debate will be held in Washington DC at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Qualifications via the DNC eliminated the lone female candidate Tulsi Gabbard from participation. That leaves the debate stage to Socialist Barry Sanders and former vice president Joe Biden. The moderators will be Univision’s Ilia Calderón and CNN's Dana Bash and Jake Tapper. Immigrant activist Jorge Ramos was to represent Univision, but he was potentially exposed to the coronavirus.

The event will be shown exclusively via CNN.

What to watch for:

1)  The type of questions each candidate gets:

Will the establishment candidate (Biden) get softball questions?  Will he be helped as Barak Obama was once helped by moderator Candy Crowley if necessary?  Will Calderon further the progressive narrative of race having something to do with border security? Will Sanders face tough questioning on the costs of his Socialist agenda?

Please take notes and grade the moderators.

2) The mental stability of Joe Biden:

Will Joe come out as he has been lately waving his finger, trying to look forceful, while making egregious blunders?  Will Joe tire easily? Will Joe be sitting in a chair? Will Joe state a gun policy?  Will Joe play the race card?

Please observe Biden closely. Make note of how many times he says president Obama and I did this or that.

3) Policy:

We know Sanders policies on health care, education and the current Coronavirus crisis. Joe doesn't seem to have one. Can the moderators get to Joe's positions? Will they allow Joe to make up stories like his being arrested in South Africa?

This may be the last time before the election that we see or hear from Joe Biden.

It could be a useful debate.

I just found that on NDC NEWS. Looks like his strategy is to divide and divide.

Qualifications via the DNC eliminated the lone female candidate Tulsi Gabbard from participation.

I guarantee you if she were on stage, she would steal votes from them both - probably more from Biden. And if she is worth voting for, isn't she worth listening to? I think it's shameful the way the party has gone to such lengths to exclude her.

You may have a point. A small 3 candidate debate would give Gabbard stature & way too much exposure. For some reason the DNC has it in for her. She hasn't done much in the voting thus far, so it was fairly easy to make a rule saying a candidate needed at least 20% of the delegates. After all there are only 3 candidates left. Why not?/s.

I think a big reason for that is that the DNC has been so effective in silencing her. She has missed being in the last several debates, but only just barely.

It seems like it's a result of arbitrary rule changes designed to exclude people like her, Klobuchar, or Yang who actually have polled well at times and been able to raise some money, only to be smothered by the party as soon as they began to make a little headway.

I think if it happens to the Democrats, they can dip into the people who already have delegates. I doubt the party would look outside that group. I also think the movers and shakers in the party would go for Bloomberg before they'd go for Warren. Pete maybe? Frankly, I think it's an odd group, with almost no one really embodying whatever it is the bulk of Democratic voters want. If it were up to me, I'd prefer Klobuchar or Gabbard.

For the Republicans, if Trump drops dead, they'd just go with Pence, I think. Past that, it would be an absolute lottery. I don't think there is anybody obvious (like Hillary or Biden) in the party who is popularly seen as the next likely candidate. Anti-Trumpers like Romney are unpopular for their opposition, but then again, no one wants to be seen as the person to carry on his legacy.

This article is the typical right wing gaslighting propaganda.

Donald Trump can't pronounce the word 'orange' , or many other common words, but we are supposed to freak out because Biden stutters?

The fact is the right is panicking. They know Trump cant use his 'socialist' or 'communist' nonsense with Biden, so their best hope is to smear Biden with other more personal nonsense.

If Biden is senile, Trump is deranged.  How do you like them apples?

I hope Newstalkers is ready for all the fake news we are going to start seeing here.

He didn't really "rule" the country.  He was a symbolic "ruler", the country was actually "ruled" (i.e. "governed") by an elected Parliament, Prime Minister, and House of Lords. But George VI was an effective symbol of the resistance against the Nazis and was important for maintaining the unfailing spirits of his people.

Funny how we had the usual invocation of Trump, here when the article is strictly about the DNC debate tonight. The debate will take place. Biden will have to face the camera. The stooge who found himself on his way to the democratic nomination. There will be no place to hide tonight. We know what the so-called moderators will try to do, but somewhere along the way Sanders will force Biden to debate something and Biden won't in any way look like somebody who could fill Donald Trump's shoes.

If one is voting for Biden, considering his age, his VP is the thing that would be considered as much as the candidate himself.  Any guesses?  He said he would appoint the first black woman to the Supreme Court as well. Could we interpret that to mean that Harris would be reserved for the Court and Klobuchar gets the VP?

Them's politics man.   VP picks are often strategic to help the PotUS get elected.   Cheney was a notable exception.   Pence might be an exception too ... I suspect he was picked because Trump pegged him as a sycophant.   But Pence does bring the religious vote (and that is extremely important).

What does Klobuchar bring?

A competent, accomplished senator, youth, name recognition and credibility (from her recent campaign) and the first female vice president.   The latter being the critical factor.

I am not dismissing Abrams, but bringing the AA vote (against Trump) is not going to be much of a problem.   I do not see a significant move from the D dominance in the general.

More than Hillary?

I think if Biden is the nominee, the AA vote will have a higher turnout than for Hillary. For some reason, they love him.

Do you think a pasty white woman like Klobuchar will help?

Probably not, even though I do like her better than any of the Democrats who ran.

If Bernie wins, who he picks will be much more important than who Biden picks, IMO. Bernie is so far left that he would need someone half-way reasonable and practical to balance him out. Biden is vanilla, but that is who the Dems will pick, I suspect, and the VP will be much less of an issue. I think most people really vote for whoever is on the ballot for VP based on who they vote for President.

I do find it a touch humorous how, after bragging about how diverse the Democratic Party is, they end up deciding between two old white guys, though.

That's nice.

Sometimes the turnout is more important.

I, for one, would prefer to have 75% of the vote with a high turnout than 85% of the vote with a very low turnout.

I believe Biden would turn out many more AA votes than Bernie.

I also believe that Biden would receive a higher percentage of AA votes than Bernie.

Black voter turnout in 2016 saw the first decline in 20 years.

A full 7% decrease for AA was the worst decline on record for AA votes.

Yes, Hillary got a very high percentage of AA votes, but that wasn't nearly enough to offset AA staying away from the polls.

Biden won't have that particular problem.

In 2012 66.6 percent of African Americans who were eligible voted, it fell off the table in 2016 to 59.6 percent. Biden cut into the voters who voted for trump, but do you think he will motivate more voters to go out? 7% of the voters just stayed home.

I think that 7% was due strictly to Democrats running Hillary.

I don't think that Biden will suffer from low turnout among AA. His record on Super Tuesday kind of supports that--he pretty much swept anywhere with a sizable AA population.

I think if Bernie was the nominee, the AA voter turnout would likely be even lower than for Hillary.

If Biden doesn't drop out for health reasons before the convention (I think he will) he'll get the nomination and win the presidency. Joe wrapped up the pussy and black vote by promising to select a female VP and appointing a black woman to the SCOTUS. That's a double whammy that will make it near impossible for Trump to overcome.

Joe wins the general in a landslide spending his four years locked in his bedroom mumbling trying to remember who he is. Jill will run the country much like Edith Wilson did after Woodrow suffered a stroke

Vic, now just so you read this properly, I am simply asking a question because I am curious.

I see partisans being routinely unfair in their criticism of 'the other side'.   If 'their guy' is attacked they defend.  But if the 'other guy' did the very same thing as 'their guy' they attack.

Take the current pandemic.   It is my position that no matter who is PotUS, the partisans from the other party will generally blame the PotUS and the partisans from the same party will generally defend the PotUS in his handling of the crisis.

Fairness and objectivity (and in many cases facts and reason) is largely irrelevant here.

Your take?

My take is that prior to Trump we used to rally around the president in times of crisis, no matter who it was. The lone exception might have been the insane narrative of "racism" during the fiasco generated by the lack of preparation during and after the flooding of New Orleans via Hurricane Katrina. Let's face it, that was a political hit job on George W Bush. I'm sure that is being used as a point of reference for the media, just as I'm sure I can hear the rumblings of "we finally got him with this." It's in the air!
