Former Trump economic adviser: This is Trump's 'Churchillian-moment'
"I think it's time for big, bold steps in terms of... calling up the reserves, the military, whatever it takes to make sure we have the screening and the testing and all of the things that are necessary to contain this in a big way, because he has to step up right now and be the president, the commander-in-chief," said Moore.

A former top economics adviser to President Donald  Trump  did not mince words when it came to describing the challenge posed to the country and the president by the  coronavirus  outbreak.

"Let's face it, this is his Churchillian moment," said Fox News contributor and Heritage Foundation distinguished visiting fellow  Stephen Moore , in reference to former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, who led his nation through the darkest days of the Second World War.

"He has to step up," Moore continued on Fox Nation's  "Deep Dive"  on Monday. "He's going to be judged by voters over what he does over the next six weeks and how he deals with this crisis.

"I think it's time for big, bold steps in terms of... calling up the reserves, the military, whatever it takes to make sure we have the screening and the testing and all of the things that are necessary to contain this in a big way, because he has to step up right now and be the president, the commander-in-chief," said Moore.

Vice President Mike Pence announced during a White House coronavirus task force news conference on Tuesday that the president has directed the task force to examine how the Department of Defense can improve the capacity of the U.S. health care system to respond to the outbreak.

"There's two lanes that DOD can provide, in addition to the many medical supplies, to augment our national reserves," said the vice president, "The president has tasked us to evaluate and make available and to consider every request from governors, for either field hospitals, expanding facilities or the Army Corps of Engineers who could retrofit existing buildings."

"I think that this is going to prove to be President Trump's finest hour because he is facing this challenge head-on," added Jenna Ellis, senior legal adviser to Donald J. Trump for President, Inc.

"I think that getting advice from all of the different players and then making a confident decision is why our founders had a commander-in-chief that had the authority, but the limited authority that a president does.

"They put that in the hands of a citizen because they understood that someone like President Trump, who has taken advantage of the American experiment, would be in the best hands for America," she concluded.

And this President has stepped up - Most recently invoking the Defense Production Act, which ensures the private sector can ramp-up manufacturing and distribution of emergency medical supplies and equipment. Trump also announced that the Housing Department is suspending all foreclosures and evictions until the end of April. On Saturday he announced that he was extending the European travel ban to include the U.K. and Ireland. On Tuesday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said that the administration wants to send checks to Americans “in the next two weeks.”  He continues to work with congress on a Stimulus Bill and has reached out to help state Governors.

Yes, the country dodged a bullet by electing Donald Trump instead of a 'normal' Republican.  Or a 'normal' Democrat for that matter.

Right now we don't need a President that plays by the rules.  We need a President unafraid of using a sledge hammer on the status quo.  Just imagine what would be happening if Mitt Romney or Hillary Clinton was President during this crisis.

And we are better off because of the travel ban how?

We still have the disease and it is still on a path to kill thousands of Americans.

We probably need mandatory self-quarantining.

Trump needs to stop congratulating himself and start being a leader.  Of course, unfortunately, that is impossible.

Be serious!  Did Obama call for a travel ban when he had to deal with the epidemics he dealt with?  No democrat can issue a travel ban. It goes against their ideology. Even Europe hated to have to do it, but finally admitted - that Trump was right!!!

Obviously we would have had more people infected if more people coming from China had arrived on the heels of the outbreak. Are you denying that?

We still have the disease and it is still on a path to kill thousands of Americans.

Yup, thanks to China not cancelling all flights back in December or even November.

We probably need mandatory self-quarantining.

For seniors that is the case, but we need strong measures right now to hold down a spike in the epidemic. We now have plenty of models from China and Europe, which has become the epicenter of the disease.

Trump needs to stop congratulating himself and start being a leader.

Is that how you see it? I'm not surprised. The scum in the media and on the left need to put this country first and stop the political attacks.

It was the right thing to do, but it didnt prevent the disease. What is important is what is done now, not ideological claptrap.

And you don't think it would have been worse if Trump hadn't acted when he did?  Part of the reason that we have it in all 50 states is because Europe never restricted travel and we got people coming in from Europe! You know Europe, they let every one in and criticized Trump, but now that they got hit much worse than us (use that as the comparison), they are now restricting travel. Imagine that!

It was the right thing to do, but it didnt prevent the disease.

See, that wasn't hard, was it?

Do you have a crystal ball or a time machine, you don't have a clue what Mitt Romney or Hillary Clinton who have done so your statement is FALSE

Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton are predictable politicians.  Both are policy wonks; they don't have a history of getting their hands dirty.

Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton would have handled the current situation as an economic crisis.  What we are experiencing are war time conditions and not an economic downturn.  The SARS pandemic is more like a nuclear war or an asteroid strike.  The SARS pandemic has transformed the consumer economy into a subsistence economy.  Supply-side monetary policy will accomplish nothing in the current situation.

The focus now should be on protecting the economy and preparing to restart the consumer economy as the pandemic recedes.  We need to protect businesses and jobs.  If we allow businesses to shed their workforce or fall into bankruptcy that will create a huge impediment for restarting the consumer economy.  The financial sector cannot be saved at the present time.

This is war, not a recession.  Bureaucratic obstacles must be smashed.  And the Federal deficit has no bottom.  Now is the time to break the rules, cut red tape, and avoid pinching pennies.  Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton may have soothed the nation with political pablum but neither have demonstrated willingness or ability to fight this kind of war.

Three million people left the Hubei province in China in an attempt to escape the virus before China locked it down. Who knows how many would have come to America in the month and a half since Trump imposed travel restrictions on people who'd been to China.

Vic, 467 people died in Italy TODAY.

What has the US been able to do successfully to prevent us from having many thousands of deaths here?

The delay in testing was more important in a negative way than the China ban was in a positive way.

John,

The first diagnosed case of Covid 19 in Italy was confirmed on Jan 31, 2020 when two Chinese tourists in Rome tested positive.

The first diagnosed case of Covid 19 in the US was confirmed on Jan 20, 2020 in a 35 year old man who had returned form Wuhan, China on Jan 15th.

I think the numbers help prove out that the US has been rather successful in preventing the 'many thousands of deaths'.  Italy did not restrict travel until March when they locked down some regions to slow the spread of the virus. The US has been restricting travel into the country for non-citizens for weeks.

Vic, 467 people died in Italy TODAY.

And you know that Italy is a much smaller country than the USA. They let everyone in and the situation there is dire. They are letting people over 80 years old die. They were overwhelmed. We had President Trump.

What has the US been able to do successfully to prevent us from having many thousands of deaths here?

So far, as I have listed on one of your seeds (as well as Post #1) the President did suspend travel from China on Dec 31, long before the WHO got around to classifying the outbreak as a pandemic. The CDC did leave us in a bit of a bind because they didn't have adequate test kits and they seemed to be more concerned with enforcing their bureaucratic laws than controlling the virus. The WHO had developed test kits for Corona virus, but had never offered them to us. Europe being Europe hadn't placed any restrictions on travel until the horse had left the barn. Some of our problems were exacerbated via travel coming from Europe. Despite the problems with CDC and Europe, the President was able to get the best people to develop guidelines for the country along with engaging corporations willing to work on testing & controlling the spread of the disease. The President has also been able to work with governors, some of whom were his arch enemies, not to mention about a $Trillion in stimulus spending.

The delay in testing was more important in a negative way than the China ban was in a positive way.

I disagree and btw, those who have talked to their doctors about symptoms and their doctors asking for a test should be tested. We should not be giving 32 Million tests. We are in the treatment stage already. We are looking at treatment and eventually a vaccine. If wee can prevent our hospitals from being overwhelmed within the next two months, I say we defeat it. However we must protect ourselves in the future from China, not only from their irresponsible handling of these viruses emanating within their country, but from allowing them a monopoly on essential items like prescription drug ingredients.

It was January 31. The administration was aware of the virus in early December.

The WHO had developed test kits for Corona virus, but had never offered them to us.

Actually they were offered to the US. Then US declined them because they had not been FDA approved which was a requirement of the CDC. I can understand that to some degree.

I was listening to a talk on the radio when driving. It was explained that the CDC would not accept the test kits because they were not rated by the FDA. There was a great concern the tests may result in false positives and false negatives.

I also have heard such stories, as well as others including one that says the WHO never had such test kits - only Germany did!  Again, I'd like to see some proof of who had what and what was offered to the CDC. I'm not defending CDC, they were obviously unprepaired.

Andrew Cuomo should be president. He sounds far more capable about this crisis than Trump does.

Seems the good Governor of New York seems to disagree with Mr. Russell....

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo praised the Trump administration’s efforts to handle the coronavirus outbreak on Tuesday, after initially criticizing the federal government’s response as “absurd and nonsensical.”

“His team is on it. They’ve been responsive,” Cuomo said at a press conference. “I want to say thank you.”

The Democratic governor said that he spoke to Trump on Tuesday and that the president is “100 percent sincere” in his desire to work with the state to control the virus outbreak, which has mushroomed in the U.S. over the past week.

The administration is “ready and willing to help,” Cuomo said, “especially on the hospital capacity issue.”

The governor emphasized that the New York state government “cannot meet this crisis without the resources … of the federal government.”

Just imagine what would be happening if Mitt Romney or Hillary Clinton was President during this crisis.

Well we would still have the pandemic team on the government's payroll.  So we probably would have been better prepared when it hit.

We would probably have accepted the WHO tests, instead of farming them out to a friend in the pharmaceutical industry.  So we'd have earlier knowledge that it was in America, and a better chance of slowing or stopping it before it got to this point.

We probably would not have put "I need to pray on it Pence", and "He will solve the middle East crisis Kushner" in charge of handling the pandemic.

The pandemic is Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) caused by coronavirus transmitted from animals to humans.  The World Health Organization and international medical community has known about SARS since the 2003 epidemic that spread the disease to 26 countries.

The WHO and international medical community has been issuing dire warnings of a SARS pandemic for the last 15 years to obtain public funding for understanding the disease, developing vaccines and treatments, and planning for a pandemic.  Fifteen years of publicly funded research and planning lasted nine weeks.  So, what happened?

Testing has been hampered by lack of laboratory capacity.  The test kits everyone harps about are nothing more than sampling kits; they aren't tests.  The viability of the collected samples are time limited; there is a window of time before the samples degrade and become useless.  Collecting samples from more people won't accomplish much if those samples can't be tested before they degrade.  The actual test is performed at a single CDC laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia.  The Trump administration has been cutting bureaucratic red tape for certification to bring state and university laboratories online and increase testing capacity.

We knew SARS had spread to the United States 14 days after the virus was Identified as COVID-19 by the WHO.  Apparently everyone was relying on 15 years of World Health Organization planning to control or prevent the spread of SARS.  To control spread of SARS it would have been necessary to issue global travel restrictions on January 7 when the virus was identified by WHO.  The Trump administration did impose travel restrictions on China on January 31.  Why didn't WHO pull the trigger when the virus was identified?
