Anthony Fauci , the nation’s top infectious disease expert and a member of the White House coronavirus task force, said he plans to tell a Senate panel on Tuesday that there will be “needless” fatalities if the country reopens too soon amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"The major message that I wish to convey to the Senate [Health, Labor and Pensions] committee ... is the danger of trying to open the country prematurely," Fauci wrote in an email to The New York Times.

"If we skip over the checkpoints in the guidelines to: 'Open America Again,' then we risk the danger of multiple outbreaks throughout the country. This will not only result in needless suffering and death, but would actually set us back on our quest to return to normal," he added.

Fauci is one of four administration officials appearing remotely as witnesses to answer senators' questions regarding the pandemic and state openings.

In his email, Fauci referred to the White House guidelines for states to reopen nonessential businesses.

States across the country have started reopening, and in some cases states have not met the recommended requirement of having a 14-day downward trajectory in documented COVID-19 cases before starting gradual plans.

Senate Health Committee Chairman  Lamar Alexander  (R-Tenn.) said Saturday that four administration officials, including Fauci, would appear as witnesses at the hearing Tuesday via video conferencing.

Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Stephen Hahn, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and Assistant Secretary for Health Brett Giroir will also appear at the hearing.

The virus has infected more than 1.3 million people and killed 80,684 people in the U.S., according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University .

Let us count how many Trump comments that Fauci will be confronted with.

Waiting until there are no new cases and zero deaths have occurred is a stupid idea and not an option.

The country must get back to work gradually in steps before more lives are ruined.

Trump is not responsible for the appearance of the virus, and he and his team have done the best they can

considering that the Democrats have dragged their feet and tried to slow down the recovery.

Doctors are overly cautious when giving medical advice, for them there's no down side to being overly cautious in fact it can prevent a lot of problems for them. The problem is many times their advice is not practical in the real world, they're only concerned with health and health care while we need to be concerned with all aspects of our lives and society at large. I remember when I was a teen my buddy wouldn't pop his zits, he'd have this pustule on his nose and he wouldn't pop it. He said his doctor told him never to pop a zit because it could get infected (as if the pustule wasn't an infection already). I though this was stupid so I asked my doctor and he gave me that same advice "don't pop them or they might get infected" I laughed in his face and I have popped every zit I ever had and never had a problem because I know that a zit is an infection and leaving it to fester is worse than popping it and cleaning and treating the wound. But that's just their medical training (Lawsuit prevention) that makes them give overly cautious advice even though they probably pop their own zits.

ig,

You have just deliberately applied a different standard to Dr. Fauci than you did to President Trump.  Trump had the same information that you've just stated that Fauci had, yet Fauci gets a pass while you consider that Trump lied.  Total hypocrisy.  I've noticed this tendency with anti Trumpers before, including some here.  If another person makes a misstatement, if they didn't have accurate information, well, that just means that they were misinformed or reached a wrong conclusion.  If Trump has the same thing happen, "HE LIED HE LIED HE LIED" is all you hear from the anti Trumpers.  Maybe they should grow up, if that's possible.  By the double standard that they use, they have sacrificed all their credibility whenever they talk about Trump.  They don't seem to realize that many of us don't even like Donald Trump, but we DESPISE his enemies.

YES, he didn't pull a Trump an PURPOSELY LIE TO    US    ALL

Hippocrazcy  U say, well, beleave it or knot, i'll disagree.

When Trumps' EXPERT, after reviewing more detailed and extensive findings on and about said 'NEW' Virus, HIS recommendaions rightfully Changed, Why Didn't Trumps' ?

Y for TWO FRCKN MONTHS did TRUMP LIE yet AGAIN and AGAIN about this virus, thus leaving those silly enough to believe the LIAR in Chief, and then not taking it serious, till tens of thousnds MORE had been infected, and thus  a percentage  wound up DEAD !

I watched Trump state one :LIE after another, as his EXPERTS  had to walk him back as his answers were NOT TRUTHFUL. THey actually contradicted the potUS in the SAME briefings, again WTF.

I witnessed one intelligent Scientist learn new FACTS about Virus and instantly modify his EXPERT recommendations, while Trump just continued to downplay the severity, and said it might magically go away...    Are we in a fantasy movie here or something ? These things don't just 'go away'.  One guy fromChina is now a few million and over 80,000 DEAD.

If Trump had truly

listened to his experts and implemented all of their suggestions in a timely fashion, our infection rate and death toll would have been significantly lower.

Instead, due to his main re-election campaign strength, the economy, TRump LIED again and again.

If something is so new, and you have Scientific experts learning about it and as they learn, modifying these suggestive recommendations, that is the SMART Scientific method observed.

When you have a Pol, who incessantly LIES about everything, nd DOES NOT MODIFY the Message that his EXPERTS did, therein LIES the problem, and the REASON the US leads the WORLD in infections and deaths,

can you still stand all this winning....?

But Trump !

Since all this 'don't trust the doctors' is rampant in magaland, Trump is kinda the reason we are even having this discussion.  He and his magas live in his alternative reality.

No one has ever said that.

This "Magaland folks" as you put it, want to know what the "Expert Doctors" think about how long everyone is supposed to be out of work.

Not one "Expert" has said one word about it. All we hear is that they added another month to the lock up, with no seeming end in sight.

Funny thing.....everyone that insists we listen to the "Experts", is going BROKE. In the meantime, they keep getting paid for telling us we must stay inside and continue to go BROKE !

It's interesting that Fauci said what he said back in January,  and just above it's excused because we didn't know as much about the virus as we do now. Yet aren't these some of the same posters who point out how badly Trump managed the entire pandemic and if he had only taken certain actions back in January the death toll would be so much less.

It just seems like some people don't want to bother remembering yesterday nearly as much as they want to just argue.

A simple yet vexing question, whom do you trust more in the dealing with the facts and fallout of dealing with the pandemic, Dr. Fauci or Trump?

I haven't really faced that question. Thus far Fauci has recommended and Trump has fulfilled the recommendations.

In answering the question, one need only look at motivation.

If I'm looking at motivations, I have to look at everyone's. IMO progressives obviously want American death and economic collapse all in order to defeat Trump.

Aren't you glad you asked me?

That was back in January.

So what? Our leading expert was listening to the murderous, lying Chinese government and the disgraced WHO.

When you know more, you adjust your advice.

Sorry, but I expect a good deal more from the heavily educated, lord high expert on infectious diseases!

Not a lie, not misinformation.

Haven't I made that argument twice already for your fellow progressive, who fails to respond?  Simply being wrong kills people and destroys lives just as much as a lie.

NOT CONSISTENTLY WRONG like you said.

YES HE HAS BEEN. All those models they used were absolutely wrong. And how about that drivel with the masks. What that just being wrong or did he mean to say WE HAVEN"T GOT ANY RIGHT NOW!!!  And what about shutting everything down?  Wht didn't we just quarantine everyone over 65 and put a mask on everyone who needed to go to work?  There's a question for Fauci!

And he is a doctor and scientist, not merely a bureaucrat.

So far, I'm not impressed.

Is Trump unable to process new information as it is learned?

YES!   (but, but, but, but Trump) Give it up!

In answering the question, one need only look at motivation. One is a trained and competent scientist speaking to the ramifications of re-opening before we are totally prepared.

Not quite.  The doctor is speaking only to the medical ramifications of re opening.  That is what he is trained for.  Outside of his medical training, he has no more training than any of us, probably less.  He is a specialist, knowing only his specialty.  You are expecting him to know how to handle problems in Economics and Sociology when he has had no training for them.  That's why Dr. Fauci is not in charge and the President is; because all of the President's training and experience lead him toward the "Fuzzy Studies" that science proponents like Dr. Fauci ignore.  In this situation, those things are just as important as the medical problems.

Perhaps Laura Ingraham best answered the trust issue with Fauci:

2 months ago: "Can't open until we flatten the curve to save our healthcare system."

One month ago: "Can't open until we have a vaccine."

A few days ago: "Can't open until we have multiple vaccines."

Today: (Essentially) Can't open until Biden wins.

Jan:  crickets, rallies and golfing

Feb: nothing to see here the flu is worse, we banned flights from China and our work is done.  Rallies, golfing

Mar: oops, not the flu, its vicious. Anybody can get a test (still not true in May). 'It will go away and we'll have a great Easter'

Apr: take any of the previous months and they fit right in here, substituting rallies for briefings. It's like the flu, its not like the flu'.

May: time to open up whether its safe or not.  60,000 deaths to over 150,000 deaths by August.  "we've done a fantastic job".  Kush not sure the election can happen in Nov.

There has been NO coordinated response to this national disaster from the federal gov't. Lies, lies and more lies from Trump and his enablers.

In Turkey, the government has thrown HC at everyone with the virus—more than 117,000 cases. 3000 have died, but that’s lower than the global death rate, Turkish officials say. The “relatively low death toll is thanks to treatment protocols in the country, which involve two existing drugs—the controversial anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine touted by President Trump, and Japanese antiviral favipiravir,” CBS News   reports .

If I'm not mistaken, Fauci has also flip-flopped on the timely use vis-à-vis the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine. Even though I've never questioned Fauci's CV, I do question his overall understanding of how a pandemic also affects people's economic, educational, and overall health collapse when he calls for an indefinite "shut down".

Don't try to blame Dr Fauci for Trump hearing what he wants to hear.  The people pushing that drug weren't the doctors, they always came back to a more cautious position.  Trump won't accept information he doesn't like.  Also, as Dr Fauci said, he doesn't weigh in on the economics, he weighs in on the medical and scientific.  When he calls for a shut down its to save American lives.  Now you understand how fucked up it is for the masses and economists to weigh in on the health matters.  The docs are telling us what will happen if things go back to normal,  and if mass death is good for the economy, well, may want to rethink that one.  That is why this isn't normal and requires the best.  Instead we get the worst.

well unlike the LIAR in Chief , Fauci is intelligent enough to modify his recommendations as circumstances change, new facts are discovered, and or new information is shared,. This is about a Brand New Corona Virus, as NO ONE has dealt with this particular virus in humans before.

Intelligent peoples recognize that when facts change, new recommendations should be issued, but you knew this i'm sure.

I have never blamed anyone, even Fauci, so please do not ever project or make demands upon me like that again. Thank you in advance.

  • I never mentioned President Trump in my comment. Why did you? Projecting again? But, since you did ...

Many MDs and scientists have stated that they found that the Hydroxychloroquine/Zithromax combination worked very well BUT only to be used at the onset/early stages of Hunan Virus/COVID-19 symptoms.

Trump won't accept information he doesn't like.

That is your opinion, and it is not based upon facts.

Also, as Dr Fauci said, he doesn't weigh in on the economics, he weighs in on the medical and scientific.  When he calls for a shut down its to save American lives.

While you are correct in saying that Fauci doesn't weigh in on the effects of the virus on our national economics, his one-size-fits-all "medical and scientific" opinions clearly show that he does not consider our nation's psychological health even close to being equally important as our physical health.
