The United States Park Police (USPP) say neither they nor assisting law enforcement groups deployed tear gas to clear Lafayette Park of protesters ahead of President Donald Trump's dramatic walk from the White house to St. John's church Monday.

Trump came under fire for the walk after journalists alleged the police had used tear gas to clear peaceful protesters out of the way. The USPP now says that no tear gas was used and that the only irrtitants they used to disperse the crowd were smoke canisters and pepper balls.

NEW: statement from @usparkpolicepio - "No tear gas was used by USPP officers or other assisting law enforcement partners to close the area at Lafayette Park. " pic.twitter.com/eZOD40MW0r — Brooke Singman (@BrookeSingman) June 2, 2020

"To curtail the violence that was underway, the USPP, following established policy, issued three warnings over a loudspeaker to alert demonstrators on H Street to evacuate the area," The USPP said in a statement. "As many of the protesters became more combative, continued to throw projectiles, and attempted to grab officers' weapons, officers then employed the use of smoke canisters and pepper balls."

"No tear gas was used by USPP officers or other assisting law enforcement to close the area of Lafayette Park," the agency asserted.

The Park Police also said they had discovered caches of baseball bats, metal bars and glass bottles hidden on the street.

Trump entered Lafayette Square, which borders the northern White House grounds, shortly before the 7 pm curfew began Monday night. When he arrived at St. John's church, he pulled out a bible and remained there for pictures. Every U.S. president since James Madison has prayed in the church, and rioters attempted to burn it down Sunday night.

Trump's walk came after he made a brief speech in which he told Americans "I am your law and order president," and vowed to bring the U.S. military to assist police in the nation's capital. Trump has the authority to do so because the District of Columbia is not a state.

CNN reporters and others lied about this one. Another false narrative got launched.

"I was in Lafayette Park on Sunday night when the facilities building was being burned and trashed--the same pepper spray was fired. Not pleasant to inhale but not tear gas. There's a big difference. Correct your article please." (Laura Ingraham to CNN)

Since she evidently was not there on Monday night, why is she saying anything definitive about what happened Monday night?

Obviously, John, After the USPP told the American people what was used, Ms Ingraham though she could explain how a CNN reporter who was there could easily become confused and use the term "Tear Gas" which was picked up without any vetting by a dishonest media!

Ingraham responded with outrage to the following statement from former Obama adviser David Axelrod: “Tear gas & rubber bullets, horses & batons to break up a peaceful crowd across from the WH apparently to clear them out all so the POTUS could stage a photo op, holding up a bible. at St. John’s Episcopal Church.”

“False,
Ingraham replied, asking why Twitter had not fact checked the post.

What a liar David Axelrod is!   He almost got away with it!

will you be happy?

No, President Donald Trump didn't have police shoot tear gas at innocent people so he could pose for a pic with an upside-down Bible. Both the president and his lackeys at certain media outlets want to make sure we're clear on that. You see, the truth is that Trump had police bombard a law-abiding crowd with a gaseous substance that produces tears.

You see the difference? Not really? It doesn't matter. We're talking about this right now,

To split hairs over which is more injurious is childish, especially by an Administration that should no better...
Last night, the Trump reelection campaign demanded media outlets issue a correction about any tear gas reporting. "Every news organization which reported the tear gas lie should immediately correct or retract its erroneous reporting," said Tim Murtaugh, campaign communications director, in a statement.

Trump folks want to pretend that masses of individual protesters and members of the press were lying, in coordination, to trick people into thinking the administration behaved worse than it did. But the fact of the matter is that being tear-gassed and being bombarded with a pepper-spray bomb produce the same effects, and people were reporting on what they had experienced and witnessed directly.

The only obvious difference between pepper spray/balls and tear gas is that one is organic

and one is man made.

The two biggest differences between tear gas spray  and pepper spray are their chemical makeup and delivery methods. Pepper spray (sometimes referred to as “ OC spray “) is a combination of natural chemicals, whereas tear gas (also called “ CS gas “) comes from man-made compounds. Learn more about the different effects of each type of spray.

Pepper spray and tear gas spray are both non-lethal irritants commonly used in self-defense and crowd control. While some people use the terms interchangeably, it is important to note that tear gas and pepper spray are not the same product, and each has its own unique chemical distinctions.

The only thing more terrifying than being tear gassed or pepper sprayed is being tear gassed or pepper sprayed in your own home or place of business. When it comes to the aftereffects of a CS, CN, or CO attack, one thing is true for all: you will need professional help to clean up the mess.

When @ usparkpolicepio says they didn’t use “CS or CN” tear gas, technically that’s correct. “OC” gas cannisters used instead. Causes same tears, tight breath and comes out green. This is not a smoke canister. I picked this off the street after it was launched at us Monday.

The cannister being held up in the photo has "OC" on it.

OC is an  inflammatory agent  and unlike tear gas it is effective on those under the influence of drugs and alcohol. When the OC contacts the mucous membranes (eyes, nose, throat, and lungs), symptoms will appear instantly. The capillaries of the eyes will immediately dilate, causing temporary blindness.

Why do we have to quibble whether it was tear gas or another chemical?

I've never been tear gassed or pepper sprayed but apparently they both cause very unpleasant symptoms in the victim.

It seems like the park police chief was using the fact that some news reports said "tear gas" instead of pepper spray  to give the impression that no chemical was used. Dishonest.

Every morning they start peaceful and every night they turn violent.

Simple solution - any protest that turns violent can't have a permit to protest the next day!

You're assuming that they get permits. Not sure that is the case.

A slew of public spaces are OK for protests -- sidewalks, city parks, streets and other public forums are usually lawful,
Some states require you file a permit to block off streets, and the right to assembly doesn't give you the automatic right to march on a public highway,

Seems to me people are tripping all over themselves trying to do just that to prove the "other side" is bad. Or at least worst than "their side". I don't ever need to wonder why we are a nation so divided - I only have to read the articles posted here on NT.

What has not been reported is that a curfew was in place beginning at 7:00 pm.  Donald Trump left the White House at 7:01 pm.  The street was supposed to be cleared by the time Trump left the White House.

Trump's little stunt was not about the protests; it was about law enforcement doing its job to enforce the curfew and clear the street.  Period.

Silence is an answer.

The facts aren't on the side of the self-righteous outrage.  So, who needs facts when lies better supports the outrage?

That says more about the press than anything else.

I did read that in a story which went on to say that the clearing began at 6:33. Until 7:01, no one was breaking the law. You don't get a ticket for approaching the speed limit.

What a joke. Let's try yelling at a crowd spread over blocks and see if they understand what's going on. From a reporter on the scene:

There might have been warnings at Lafayette yesterday but they were so far or faint that not everyone heard them. From my vantage point the only hint police were about to charge was the national guard marching to the barricade minutes before it happened.

After all, a photo op was at stake here...

How about this: Wait 27 minutes until curfew, then proceed if they're still there. At that time, if they're still there, at least they'll know why you're advancing. Maybe those charged with enforcing the law should not change the law on-the-fly, otherwise, the law just looks like whatever suits their purposes at the time. Hardly respect inspiring.
