Healthy year and a half old Marius dead because the gene pool was full?
Marius the giraffe killed at Copenhagen zoo and fed to lions. Stunned, disgusted and outraged these are but a few emotions I felt when I read this in the press today, just another reminder of mankinds appalling arrogance and total lack of compassion for the natures citizens of the wild. Here is a zoo that keeps wild animals in captivity, away from their natural environment where they can roam free and practice natural choice and free will. Then when things dont quite meet the desires of these arrogant men, what do they do? They show absolute disregard for nature and destroy it. Despite the many offers of a new home, of which there were many, the Copenhagen zoo in its infinite wisdom decided it was more convenient to simply destroy a perfectly healthy animal. It is disturbing how reckless the Copenhagen zoo decision was, how thoughtless and careless they actions were towards another living creature. Mankind really needs to understand that the world wasnt made for mankind to do as he wished and just destroy whatever didnt suit their needs. Im disgusted that this was allowed to happen and that the Copenhagen zoo thought it was an ethical decision on their part. If their precious gene pool was their big concern there were many other avenues open for the placement of this animal. There was even an opportunity for the to receive a fairly large endowment from one source. Killing a healthy animal in a zoo environment should never have been an option.
This turned my stomach and made me mad. I don't know how this could happen in todays environment when there are so many other viable choices that could have been made.
Oh - look for a sick animal to kill to feed the other species that eat meat - or put the meat eating species on veggie diets?
This is the way nature works - we should help the officials, not ridicule them.
I have to disagree with you on this one. The African based animals are being depleted at a ridiculous rate the Zoo's are the only place where some of the animals exist today. That is the reason for the captive breeding programs they carry out. Thanks for your input and taking the time to read the posting.
The 'control of nature' is a phrase conceived in arrogance, born of the Neanderthal age of biology and philosophy, when it was supposed that nature exists for the convenience of man.

Loud and Clear AMac thanks for reading and joining in.
Totally understand where you're both coming from. I work with Natural Resources and one of my primary jobs is to ensure the propagation of T & E's - flora and fauna. So, I have to look at what "Mother Nature" would want done to keep the populations alive and growing.
The zoo's program of propagation has increased beyond the natural progression and their manner of equalizing is nothing short of what nature would have done. However, their method(s) lack quite a bit in the area of management plans, they did solve one issue they had and that was feeding, in a cost effective manner, one of the other species that "customers" come to see and o-o-o- and ahhhh over.
Personally??? This was a piss poor way of doing it, 'specially by sending the word out either purposefully or by accident of what they had done. I will bet anyone that their action(s) is very similar to what other zoos across the world are doing - but no one knows about it 'cause it ain't publicized.
Sorry 1st but there were just to many other options open to them. This one is just a bad decision. Hell they even had one man offer millions for the live animal and the gene pool would have been preserved. What Zoo couldn't use millions of infused dollars?
And, can we call more people to witness what we're gonna do???
Absolutely 1st, if this were their only choice it should still have been carried out behind the scenes so to speak.
Literally
Couldn't agree with you more, this is inexcusable.
Ahhhh yes, the good old mantra of civilization...Let's kill it because we can..
