I kept rats in my science lab for years. They are bright, loving and sensitive animals, that get a bad rap because of on particular species of them, the Norwegian rat, which is what we see in our streets.
Check out this link to see adorable pictures of them.
Yeah, not a fan of the big scary brown ones. But remember that an animal is judged on the evolutionary scale by adaptability and opossable thumbs and these guys do have both going for them.
The are very smart and very affectionate. I had brothers in my lab for a couple of years. I used to bathe them in the sink and they loved it! One day I noticed that one of the brothers had a small mass on his back. It started to grow and I knew that it was cancer. He died overnight, and when I came into the lab, his brother was trying to "wake" him. It was so sad. We buried him in the school yard. His brother, totally heart broken, stopped eating. No matter what I did, he just wouldn't. He died a few days later. He died of a broken heart. It is something I will never forget.
I'll have to take your word for that Kavika . None of those critters seem to inhabit the region in any appreciable numbers ... Sure some folks live at their home on the range & can expect this but not me :
I don't know...... I believe he is thinking to himself....... "OK... she's prettier, but see what happens when you tell her to retrieve that stupid stick" or "I won't shut my eyes until she's gone." maybe ""This just isn't going to work out the way I planned it."
Priceless.

This cat thought that he could ''take me''. What a fool cat. Now he want's to do 2 out of 3...
Good one Kavika!
Mike... wow..... that must have really hurt you. I'd sue for damages, but your brain stem looks a bit messed up.
The reason I have a problem with rats , mice & possums is that they will come into your home uninvited . Not so for cats & dogs ...
So do armadillo's, groundhogs, raccoons etc etc Petey. Even of odd dear will stop by for a snack.

They're so darling!!! I've always loved white rats, but haven't been able to keep them, because of the cats... They are darling, for sure!
