You Think You Know Remote in the Lower 48? - Try This

Known as the Northwest Angle, it is the northern most point in the lower 48. The only part of the of United States that is north of the 48th parallel, the U.S. Canadian border. It is part of Minnesota.

If you think you live somewhere that is remote, try living here. The population was 152 in 2000 censes. It has a one room school house. That's right, a one room school house, rumored to be the only one in the lower 48.

It received telephone service in the 1990's.

It is also the northern most Indian Reservation. The Red Lake Ojibwe hold 1,200 square miles in trust, which is70% of the area.

There is one road which runsfrom Minnesota, throughCanada to get there. In other words you can't get there from here, without driving through Canada.

If you have ana needfor a thrill, you can reach itby boat in the summer, and by ''ice road'' over the frozen depths of Lake of the Woods in the winter.

Before you think this is just a lake, think again. Lake of the Woods has, 65,000 miles of shore line, 14,000 plus islands and a surface area of 1679 square miles.

TheMystery writer, William Kent Krueger, latest novel takes place in the Northwest Angle. His main character is Cork O'Connor an Ojibwe Sheriff.

Yes, I've been there many times, a few times by ''ice road''..It's a beautiful area with more wildlife (animals/birds/fish, notthe other kind) than most places on earth. And it gets cold, really cold. Minus 40 is not unusual.

Enjoy your trip. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northwest_Angle

Great fishing and most transportation is via canoe, ATV and snowmobile.

Now I know better than to believe the on-camera people from "Life Below Zero" . On that TV show they said that Alaska is the last wilderness in the US ...

Nope, the NW Angle will give Alaska a run for the money Petey.

Actually Petey, moose are a lot more dangerous than bear.

I guess you are referring to a cute cuddly black bear and not a grizz .

Not a grizz, but most any other bear Petey. A bull moose will weight up to 1600 lbs, and will charge a man, car truck in a heart beat.

Last year in Alaska a cow with a calf stomped a man to death on a collage campus. Another cow with calf, stomped a man to death in town.

A male black bear can weight up to 600 lbs Petey, not really something to cuddle.

The Northwest Angle, Lake of the Woods, is HUGE. Even the most experienced hunters and outdoors folk are easily fooled by the twists and turns hidden in this deeply wooded marshy wilderness. It's paradise.

''It's paradise'', that it is Larry. Also it's nota place for inexperienced tourists without a guide.

I just love the area.Grin.gif

I only "packed-in" a couple of times; the other times drovein fromthe main resort areasvia Warroad. Both times I roughed-it were both challenging and rewarding, and the best fishing I've ever experienced. I also fell into a hornets nest and broke my arm the last time 18.gif (hhhmmm...15 years ago or so); so, the older I get the closer I stick to the resort areas.

Guatamala BF? and with a Mayan guide. Good for you, expect to have a more than wonderful time.

Now if you want to go to somewhere with a little danger, wolves, bears and moose. I would be happy to be your Indigenous guide in the NW Angle. I've only lost a couple of kids, and two adults over the years. Darn bears, get really cranky some time. Smile.gif

ROTFL, damn Larry, if I'm your guide the next time you want to try it. I'll keep you away from hornets nest.

What a visual that is.Grin.gif

I would think it depends on the terrain . If it is heavily wooded I expect one could move behind a tree when a moose charges . But a bear can pursue you around a tree ... and even up a tree if you try to climb .

That's true Petey, but moose will take down a tree to get to you, and they will follow you into the water. I've had experience with both, bears and moose, and don't want to do either again..I will leave that to the younger guys.Smile.gif
