Military.com Badass of the Week - Joe Medicine Crow
The story of Joe Medicine Crow. Last War Chief of the Crow Nation.
An amazing story that should be required reading for military personel.
Please view the video at the end of the article. Taken from Ken Burns, The War.

The author of the article, is very descriptive in his story. You can read the excitement in his words.
The video is well worth watching.
Counting Coup, I love it.
Really an incredible story BF. When I finished it, I felt the same as you, like I had 15 cups of ''black water medicine''...LOL..
What a difference a culture makes, eh? Wow - simply Wow.
I'm glad he was on our side - we might have lost the war if he had been a German. He was working on his PhD when he was called to service. A warrior and well educated, too !! This is someone I would like to have met and shared stories with.
me too
One tough SOB! I salute you Chief.
Great story Kavika.
Loved the video. It was so special to hear him talk about what he did and then to hear him sing. Magical moment.
How funny that he became the last war chief in a foreign land. That feather served him well.
Great story Kavika!
Amazing man 1st. Truly amazing.
BF, can't beat Joe Medicine Crow as a role model.
Grump, palma, I would love to meet him and listen to his stories.
Thanks Pokermik. He sure does deserve a salute.
That is true Gunny, a truly great American.
Wasn't it great to listen to him, I loved that part and have watched the video a couple of times Perrie.
Counting Coup and stealing horses, oh man I just loved that part.
Make sure that they watch the video as well BF. It's classic.
If I tried to accomplish in my imagination what this fellow has accomplished in real life, I would probably hurt myself.
''A life well lived'', to say the least Honemana. We sure could use more like Joe Medicine Crow today.
I still laugh over the ''stealing horses''...I just love it.
Carrying a set of balls that size, can cause physical injury Grump.
I suspect he has more than two.
He is fortunate - we are all fortunate - that he lived through his adventures. I have no idea how many young people (and old people alike) who have gathered strength from his stories - strength that helped them through the tough times in their lives, but that is what the Creator put men like Joe Medicine Crow on the earth to do - to give us glimpses of bravery and courage. I am happy he is with us and I am grateful that Ken Burns had the foresight and opportunity to track Joe Medicine Crow down and listen to his stories.
Thank you Joe Medicine Crow. And thanks to all the warriors we don't know about and the ones who went to war and never came back to tell us their stories.
Very well said Grump.
''And thanks to all the warriors we don't know about and the ones who went to war and never came back to tell us their stories''...Yes, thanks to all warriors, who's names we do not know, nor their stories. Perhaps Joe Medicine Crow is a mix of all these men and women.
Hoka Hey
If each of us could accomplish 1/2 of what he has, the world would be a much better place flame.
It is a wonderful story RW. He is the ''Ultimate Warrior'', representing all Americans.
Hoka Hey
But, I think, in many ways we do, Kavika. We may not be as heroic and decorated, but most of us work for a better world, we strive to give our kids the tools and knowledge to live in a changing and confusing world, we tend to our sick in heroic ways, we give to those who are in need of us. If we take a close look at ourselves and the people around us, we find heroes everywhere.
Medicine Crow stands out from the crowd, no question, but let us recognize all of those around us who strive to make the world a better place for us all. Medicine Crow urges all of us on in the face of adversity - and I think that is all that he would ask of us..
Well put my friend. Very well put.
Yes he is flame....smiles.
in that, in itself, is a heroic task. Whoever has raised or is involved in educating a child these days knows how hard it is to raise them in a very ever changing world
I second Kavika - very well put, great post Grump
I don't even want to think about raising kids into todays world. What a battle.
Whoa ... this guy puts the "ierce" in fierce ! Impressive life story and accomplishments ...
He certainly has lived a full life. At close to 100 he is still an inspiration.
