Chicago Cubs Pitcher Jake Arrieta Posted The Best Second- Half E.R.A. In Major League History

On Wednesday night Jake Arrieta will be the starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild card playoff game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. If the Pirates score even one run off Arrieta it will be more than he has given up as a nine inning average over his past 20 starts.

Jake Arrieta Breaks Record for Lowest ERA in 2nd Half of Season in MLB History

Arrieta, a 29 year old right hander who was a journeyman type through his first four seasons in the major leagues with a 24-27 record and a middle of the road earned run average, improved in 2014 with the Cubs , and in 2015 has turned in one of the greatest string of performances ever. In the second half of this season , he has a 16-1 record and an earned run average of .075, the LOWEST IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL HISTORY. Even more, Arrieta's E.R.A. since Aug 1st, crunch time in a baseball season, is .041 , again the lowest ever for a major league pitcher for those months. Arrieta is also third in the league in strikeouts with 243.

So now Arrieta moves to the playoffs and a one and done situation for the Cubs and their long suffering playoff hopes. He has been the best pitcher in the major leagues for months. Can it be so again for one game ?

A nation of of Cubs fans turns it's lonely eyes to Arrieta on the bump Wednesday night.

The three best team W-L records in major league baseball this year are in the National League Central, something that I am assuming has never happened before either. One of those teams, either the Cubs or Pirates, will be eliminated in a one game playoff. Baseball may need a better way to seed playoff teams.

That is one hell of a ERA. Close to unbelievable.

One game....Ohhhhhh man....I'll root for the Cubbies. I remember Ernie Banks.

Even though I am a Mets fan, I wish him and the Cubs luck. Maybe he'll end up as good as Tom Sever? Who knows? ;-)

I am not a Cubs fan, but I'd still be happy if they won.
